jmu vs virginia tech vs su vs temple

hi guys i’m (f20) entering my 3rd year of college and i hated vcu so i’m leaving, i got into jmu, vt, syracuse, and temple (i live in va). i visited both jmu and vt, i liked jmu’s campus a little more but i really was impressed by the programs and organizations vt had to offer, as well as its national recognition outside of va (i want to maybe move outside of va after graduation so that might be helpful, i may also want to go to law school, possibly out-of state). my fafsa is still being processed but without aid jmu is around 33k, while vt is around 35k-38k, only a few thousand dollars difference. temple is around 56k-60k but they gave me a scholarship of 3k per semester so with that it’d be around 56k-60k. i haven’t heard back from syracuse’s financial aid yet either but i know without aid or scholarships it’s around 95k because apparently it’s a private school (which i didn’t know til today).

i really need help deciding which school to lean towards!

jmu pros:
\- i have a couple close friends there / know people already
\- familiar with the campus and culture
\- cheapest option
\- 2 hours from home
\- good social life offered there
\- good organizations
\- decent business school i believe?? (i’m a poli sci major but i want to switch to econ and i plan to, i know the econ major is through jmu’s school of business, and my concentration i’d pick is financial economics). (may minor in business or communications or bit)
\- jmu school of business would probably look good on a resume
\- i might rush and that would help me make friends (emphasis on MIGHT, if i don’t rush i’ll definitely join a professional frat but i was gonna do that at vt either way)

jmu cons:
\- party school / may get distracted easily
\- if i join a sorority that may be fun but it also may tank my gpa
\- less recognized outside of va

tech pros:
\- name recognition / national recognition
\- amazing business school pamplin (for if i minor in business), econ major is offered through school of sciences but is respected at vt as well
\- econ major concentration would probably be business and that one aligns more with my interests than jmu’s financial one because it’s broader and not only focused on finance
\- beautiful campus
\- would probably open up a lot of doors to law school and would be impressive on resume for my backup career / other career plan (consulting/ strategic consulting/ management consulting)
\- they offer an advisor per major AND minor so i’d have 2 or 3 advisors, more help offered, better programs it seems like
\- bigger school (i like it bigger so i run into less people i don’t wanna see)
\- game days seem fun
\- i would probably join a business frat or a law frat here
\- cheaper than the out-of-state schools, a little more expensive than jmu but not by much

cons:
\- a lot of people i never wanna see again go here (but i feel like i shouldn’t let that affect my decision) (but it also gives me anxiety) (but i also feel like it’s definitely not going to be as bad as it seems like in my head idk)
\- less diversity in greek life from what i know so i probably wouldn’t rush (but that comes with benefits as well i guess)
\- i know a couple people that go here but we’re not close, i have no close friends that go here, i might ask around and find a group to go out with for welcome week (50/50 chance i’d say but hopefully i don’t have to stay in) but i don’t have a set friend group or anything coming here

su pros:
\- fresh start / out-of state / no one from high school i don’t wanna see
\- one super close friends who goes here whos involved in greek life who knows half the campus who said hed introduced me to everybody / good opportunities socially / i will definitely make friends (ive already met 2 of his friends)
\- known school as well / good name recognition / lower acceptance rate than virginia tech so it’s impressive i got in
\- would definitely have an amazing college experience

cons:
\- further if i get homesick
\- expensive tuition
\- REALLY cold weather… (i get seasonal depression… but having a really good college experience MAY outdo that)

temple pros:
\- pretty much the same as su, i also have one friend that goes here whos involved in greek life who said she’d introduced me to everyone as well, we’re less close but she keeps her word
\- good school, known as well, less rigorous than virginia tech and syracuse though
\- scholarship

cons:
\- further if i get homesick
\- expensive tuition

Waiving extra fees in cost of attendance

Does anybody have experience with successfully waiving the extra fees listed in the cost of attendance chart (like the activity fee, program fee, etc.)? All those combined add an additional ~$2000 annually. Was wondering if they would be willing to waive them if asked.

Grad student looking for July roommate - time sensitive 🥲

Hi everyone, I need a bit of help this morning. I found an apartment I toured that I really like that is 1200sqft, 2bd/2ba, with a nice interior, big windows and good sized bedrooms, off street parking, laundry, and it's only 1300/mo plus utilities, so ending up around 750 per person. It's 1.5mi from SU on E. Genesee and on the shuttle lines or like a 20min walk. I'm looking for a roommate (either grad student or someone working nearby) who'd sign on with me, as the girl i was looking with previously decided it's too far and wants every possible amenity - I'm used to the Boston housing markets so I really just need a place that's solid I can get settled into. But bottom line its a good apartment, I'd like to apply soon, and the realtor has given me the weekend to get back to him. I'm looking to move in early July but would split the remaining rent with someone if they can't move until August.

I'm a 26yo woman and have been renting since before graduating college so I have a lot of commonspace furniture and appliances (couch, coffee table, tv, a nice wooden kitchen table/chairs, stand mixer, blender, microwave, rice cooker, dinnerware, literally anything you could think of) to the extent you'd really just need to get a bed if your budget is tight. I'm transferring to continue my PhD in cell biology and just want a nice space I can come home to relax at. I like to cook and have some house plants, am easy to get along with, and generally pretty quiet.

Please reach out if you're interested or know someone who might be! I'm happy to send the listing, chat about living styles/preferences, or get you in touch with the realtor. This is time sensitive though so keep that in mind!

Marching band score for “Down the Field”?

Hello Orange Nation,

I’m a participant in the Calgorithm on Twitter and last season, I did a project that involved arranging hardware-correct NES/Famicom 8bit versions of our opponent fight songs. I ended up enjoying the song arranging more than the actual project and just decided I was going to keep doing it. Does anyone here have or know someone who has access to the full marching band score for “Down the Field” that can get me a copy? I’d be happy to post the finished product back here when it’s done. Thanks for any help you can give me. Go Bears, Go Orange.

Admitted for on-campus, but would like to remain online?

Hi all, I was recently admitted to Syracuse University and it is my dream school. One thing that is holding me back is that I would like to remain online and not in-person, as I’m over three hours from campus AND I am disabled and can’t really be away from home. I still would love to attend Syracuse, but if I am to change my program, would there be any barriers, even though I am already admitted? Thanks.

is it too late to send waitlist LOCI?

i am still on the waitlist for the college of arts and sciences and i never got around to sending another letter of continued interest. obviously i should’ve gotten it done sooner but i was just wondering if it was still worth it to (since they say you hear from the waitlist after june 1st)? i’ve visited the school in person, gone to countless online events, and sent a first LOCI when i got deferred ED. i was offered the verto study abroad for a semester option and ultimately declined it to commit elsewhere but i still am thinking about syracuse after all this time.

Merit?

I went to go pay my first bill for Syracuse, as I’m entering as a Freshman this fall. Under the balance due it said “approved anticipated financial aid”. It was $7,500 a semester, but in my original letter I didn’t recieve any merit? Did I actually get merit? Do we think they took the money offered to other students who didn’t except Syracuse’s offer and hand it off to people who didn’t originally recieve merit at first? This was totally unexpected and I’m jumping for joy, but don’t want to get my hopes up…

Also to note, I did not request financial aid in my common app or turn in FAFSA or anything.

State of the Program: Syracuse Orange

Fran Brown enters Year 3 at Syracuse with serious energy, recruiting momentum, and a clear vision

After 2025's injury-riddled collapse, can the Orange rebound in 2026?

The 2026 story:

📌 Heavy portal reload + loaded QB room: Steve Angeli, Amari Odom, & Malachi Nelson

📌 Skill upgrades: WRs Tyshawn Russell, Darien Williams, Cole Weaver + RBs Ju’Juan Johnson & Ahmad Miller

📌 Defense led by LBs, & portal pieces focused on fixing run Defense

📌 Favorable 2026 schedule (Easier non-con + solid home draw) gives them real opportunities.

This feels like a pivotal year for Fran Brown and the Orange.

Full State of the Program - Syracuse Orange (free) Article is attached

How many wins do the Orange finish with in 2026?

Moving to Syracuse for grad school. What should I know?

Hi all! I'm attending SU this fall as an art history grad student. I'm beyond excited, but also feeling completely unprepared. I've never done a move this big before (coming from Montana), and I've actually never visited Syracuse, so I'll be arriving with very little idea of what to expect. I'd love to hear from people who have made a similar move. What are some things you wish you had known or done before moving here? Any advice about housing, neighborhoods, the university, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Syracuse Newhouse

Can someone tell me if this is a good achievement:

I applied to Syracuse for journalism originally (Newhouse) but got waitlisted and then accepted into my second choice for English instead. I emailed admissions to appeal my decision to see if I could do dual enrollment in both English and journalism (College of Arts & Sciences and Newhouse) and I got accepted. Is this rare or common and is it worth it?

DellPlain, Sadler, or Day Hall?

I am an incoming freshman in Newhouse and Whitman and am in the honors college so I’m required to live in an LLC. My roommate is not in the honors college. I’m debating between the Entrepreneurship LLC in DellPlain (not sure how it differs between the Whitman one which is on a separate floor???), the Honors LLC in Sadler, and the Multicultural LLC in Day. I’ve heard the social life in Day is really good for meeting other freshman so I feel like that could be good even though the stairs look brutal. Location wise I’ve heard that DellPlain is in a good location for classes and is right by Ernie Davis for the gym/dining hall. The only con I’ve heard is that it’s freshman and sophomores and I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. Then Sadler I’ve heard good things about it’s just a little further but has its own dining hall which is nice. My main concern is that I want to be on a floor with people from different majors not just Whitman.

Financial Aid

Hey yall, I just received my financial aid package. I have to pay 14K/y out of pocket after work study, grants and SU aid and federal loans. For reference, my family is low income and my parents are not paying a dime towards my college expenses.

Is there a way yall think I can make this gap more manageable? I really want to go to Syracuse.

I am willing to work while in school but I am afraid to commit and then not finding a way to pay. (I don’t want to take private loans)

Edit: I appealed and got 4K a year!!! I going!

Any open offices?

Does anyone know of any potential open offices? I'm a grad student here and looking for anything at all that is semi-private. My department has the typical grad rooms, but I'm starting to lose my mind.

Oh, and I already walked around through practically every building. CST, newman, geology, humanities, law, engineering, physics, math, architecture, anthropology, all of hall of languages, etc. but I BET there are some open ones.

If you know of anything, even potentially, please let me know
