That time again. Happy See You On Monday Youre Lost Monday
How did you find Tame Impala?
I had My Life in my library from way back in 2018, and it was the first song I'd ever heard from him. Found it through some YouTube channel that posted electronic music. Totally forgot about it.
2020, during lockdown, I heard Borderline on TikTok, thought it was cool, added it to my library, again, forgot about it.
Really liked a lot of Radical Optimism, and I remember when myself and my ex had it on in the car, he mentioned Kevin was a producer on a lot of those tracks, (in hindsight - VERY obvious!) but he and I never listened to TI somehow, despite being music geeks.
Anyway, around a year ago, I was making a playlist and decided to pop Borderline on there. It came on shuffle one day while I was listening to the playlist, and for a while, I was fixated on ONLY that song. I listened to it almost compulsively. Finally, after a couple weeks of that, I listened to The Slow Rush. My mind was completely BLOWN. Most played album of the year, iirc! Still, though, I didn't explore TI any further.
Several months ago, a friend begged me to listen to Currents while I was high as f**k and I just couldn't. Turned it right tf off. It felt like a break up album, and had me thinking about my ex the entire time. Did not enjoy myself at all.
Flash forward to a couple weeks ago - my birthday. Listened to Deadbeat and really enjoyed it. Listened to The Slow Rush B-Sides, Currents, and Hummer. I have barely touched anything else since. I am currently in what can only be described as Taming Paula psychosis.
What's been your Tame Impala journey?
Saw this interview and couldn't help myself.
Favorite Tame Impala lyrics?
It's so hard to choose, I think a lot of TSR has great lyricism.
Personally, I'd probably go with the bridge/outro of On Track, or the outro of One More Hour. Posthumous Forgiveness is chock-full of lyrics that make me emotional too; "I wanna say it's alright/You're just a man after all/And I know you had demons/I've got some of my own/Think you passed them along."
I'm curious which lyrics speak to you all the most from his discography!
Caring for my bipolar sub-type dx mother, advice appreciated
Hi, all.
My mother is 51, diagnosed w/ Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Sub-Type.
I am her sole caretaker, as my both my siblings have moved out. They are unwilling or unable (for their own reasons) to deal with her for extended periods. Her preoccupation with God and religion makes it very difficult for her to engage with people socially. She has "visions," sometimes of us, that are sexually explicit in nature, and asks us very inappropriate and intrusive questions, pushes her religious beliefs onto us, etc. Neither of us work (both disabled by mental illness), so we're around each other pretty much all the time.
I am turning 27, and I've never lived independently. I've been struggling with the stress of being responsible for caring for my mother; we almost lost her to a second suicide attempt about a year ago. I worry about her safety, if I were not here to keep an eye on her. The fact is, she cannot care for herself. I know it is not my job or responsibility to care for her in this way, but she is my mother. No one else will do it, and I don't think her quality of life would be any better if she were put into a care facility (which is what my family keeps suggesting to me).
The stress of this has been increasingly difficult for me to manage, to the point that my therapist has twice called the crisis team to evaluate me in the last few months.
My mother, though dx'd with schizoaffective bipolar subtype, takes the same meds that I do - Vyvanse, Pristiq, Klonopin (though, at higher doses). I feel that this is inappropriate given her clinical presentation.
The crux of all this is that she is not a clear and present danger to anyone, so she can't be sectioned or placed on any sort of hold (not that this ever helps her anyway). She doesn't think anything is wrong with her. She is on a waitlist for a therapist, but wants to keep her PCP for her medication.
Though I love her more than life itself, I cannot force her to see the bigger picture or snap her out of her illness. I also can't provide her with the care that she needs and deserves. I worry that by staying, and caring for her, I might be enabling her illness. But it's so hard to know. I'm not a doctor. There doesn't seem to be a solution. I'm just struggling. I don't know what to do. I've spoken to multiple therapists, social workers, etc. about it, and they don't seem to have any solutions either. I keep being told my the rest of my family that I have to look out for myself and put myself first. But that would mean that I leave my mother languishing in this, all alone.
I was wondering if any of you have been on one side or the other of a similar situation with this illness, what you did, how things turned out. I think I also felt like I needed to vent in a place where people understand this disorder. I just feel so alone in this, and no one seems to understand my position.
