Man, there's so much misinformation around comparisons between Fold 8 vs Fold 8 Ultra.

I just bought my Fold. But while investigating, I swear, trying to decide between these two is way harder than it needs to be because people keep repeating the same oversimplified arguments like they're facts.

A lot of these "this one is better for X" takes are only half true and can be interpreted either way easily.

  • "The Fold 8 is better one-handed." Better for reaching the top, yes. But it's also much wider, so typing one-handed is harder. It's better and worse one-handed at the same time.
  • The Fold 8 has the better cover display Yes, sometimes, depends on what you're doing. Certain apps have scaling issues, vertical video has big black bars, and it's so short the keyboard takes up the entire screen. It's a different better/worse cover display depending on your use case.
  • "The Fold 8 inner display has the better shape for video and productivity as its more landscape/portrait." Yes... if fitting apps side-by-side is your only metric. But for anything that fills the entire screen (documents, browsing, etc) the Ultra often gives you far more actual usable space and the better productivity canvas. Video also is the close to the same size on both regardless of black bars. Both displays are great.
  • "The Ultra is too narrow/unusable when closed." It's narrower, yes, but that also makes it easier to hold and type one-handed. Typing with 2 hands is still better on the Wide keyboard, as well as one-handed reachability.
  • "They have the same chip, so performance is basically the same." Same chip doesn't mean same sustained performance/cooling. The regular Fold 8 wide throttles a lot harder under sustained load in a lot of testing whereas the Ultra doesn't nearly as much (gaming shows noticeable differences). Which is expected due to Samsung using a graphite cooling (instead of vapor chamber) on the Ultra but not on the regular Wide.
  • "The Fold 8 primary/wide cameras are basically the same as the Ultra in day to day use." No. The Ultra has a meaningfully bigger main sensor. That matters much more not just in low light, but also blurry photos of even slightly moving subjects (smaller sensor = takes much longer to take a picture). Comparisons of taking a photo of a building in perfect daylight spammed to death rarely discuss this.
  • "The Fold 8 camera is bad." That's also exaggerated. In daylight it's perfectly capable. The compromises only show up more with zoom, low light and motion and if you keep comparing them side by side, which most realistically will not.
  • "The Fold 8 Ultra telephoto is unusable" That's exaggerated too. Sure, zoom is much more limited and only usable at 5-15x, but its still perfectly serviceable in daylight and still provides essential utility of being able to read things far away when the Fold 8 camera immediately falls apart rapidly at range due to the small sensor + smaller megapixel number.
  • "The Fold 8 is the obvious media Fold." Then why does basically nobody mention the terrible speaker orientation and audio only on one side of your ear?? Screen shape is only one part of watching something. They are both perfectly reasonable video devices.
  • "The Ultra is just objectively better." No. It's bigger, has the better camera hardware, generally better thermals and more workspace. But it's heavier, taller, has more wasted space around some media and doesn't give you a dramatically bigger fullscreen video image in exchange.

Notice how this list is NOT about trying to convince you "X argument is wrong, Y is correct" or "The Ultra is better". Even if there was a lot of correction on the Wide model, which makes sense, being the new / exciting / different option, everyone and every reviewer will be in its honeymoon period exaggerating the things they loved about it while quietly ignoring problems everyone should be aware of (just as we did when the original Z Fold released).

The overall goal is just to show how poor some these takes can be if expressed as fact rather than opinion, and why its silly trying to make nuanced things seem black/white when the truth is just incredibly subjective and depends on what YOU want.

Both are great, amazing devices in their own right, I got the Ultra and planning to gift my wife a Fold 8 Wide eventually as I know she'd love it. And NOT because the Ultra is "superior", but because it happens to fit my specific needs right now better, while I know she would HATE the Ultra and love the Wide.

In short, let's do new buyers a favor and stop misleading them with false arguments presented as fact just because we're overly passionate about a specific device. (Specially you, device reviewers) You can like a device a device more and present why you like it just fine, just remain honest.
