Doctor recommends vaccine checks after measles case reported in Lucas County
Measles symptoms typically appear between seven and 14 days after exposure, though symptom onset may be delayed in some individuals.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Editor's note: This story has been updated to include additional information from an interview with ProMedica.
The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department is investigating a confirmed case of measles involving an out-of-state traveler who passed through Lucas County.
The health department reported that the individual was traveling from Chicago on Amtrak Train 41 on Sunday, Sept. 13 when they began experiencing worsening symptoms. Upon arriving at the Toledo station that day, the traveler sought medical attention.
The health department said its disease surveillance teams are actively monitoring for potential transmission and working alongside healthcare providers and community partners to protect local residents.
“While measles is very contagious, it is important to remember that there are effective tools to prevent its spread,” said Karim Baroudi, Toledo-Lucas County Health Commissioner. “We encourage everyone to check their vaccination status and talk with their healthcare provider if they have questions about measles or the MMR vaccine.”
Dr. Brian Kaminski, vice president of medical affairs for ProMedica, said local healthcare providers were alerted to the situation following the public notice.
“The general population really shouldn't have concern,” Kaminski said. “The reason that the alert went out was to alert people who may have been traveling in and around the train station at the same time that this passenger was on September 13th.”
Kaminski said that while measles was declared eradicated in 2000, cases have resurfaced due to declining immunization rates.
According to local health officials, measles symptoms typically appear between seven and 14 days after exposure, though symptom onset may be delayed in individuals with compromised immune systems. Kaminski explained that measles is an aerosolized respiratory virus that can linger in the air for hours after an infected person leaves a room.
“It's highly contagious, causes cough, runny nose, generalized aches, and then conjunctivitis or pink eye is a hallmark of the disease,” Kaminski said. “The rash that develops with measles, which is what most people associate with the disease, doesn't develop until about 4 or 5 days after the symptoms started.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the first signs of measles generally include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Three to five days after those initial symptoms begin, a red or reddish-brown rash breaks out, usually starting on the face at the hairline and spreading downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.
While most people recover without specific treatment, Kaminski pointed out that about 25% of people with measles require hospitalization, and about 1 in 1,000 die from the disease. High-risk groups include the elderly, the immunocompromised, and infants under 1 year old who are not yet eligible for vaccination.
“Infants aged less than a year are more susceptible to serious disease if they come into contact with somebody with measles,” Kaminski said. “So the important take home message there is if you have an infant that you feel might have been exposed due to this recent event with the Amtrak station, you should contact your primary care provider.”
Kaminski said that two doses of the vaccine are 97% effective and provide lifelong immunity for most people, but local vaccination rates currently trail recommended levels.
“Our area has about 89% of its population vaccinated. That sounds high, but it's actually not good enough,” Kaminski said. “We actually need to get to 95% before we have what's called herd immunity.”
For community members who are unimmunized or hesitant, Kaminski urged looking at the safety and effectiveness data over decades of use.
“You can protect not only yourself but people around you and people you care about from getting the disease just by getting vaccinated,” Kaminski said.
Officials advise anyone who is unimmunized or unsure of their immunity status, and who was at the train station location or in contact with someone showing symptoms of a fever or unexplained rash, to contact a healthcare provider for guidance.
35 [F4F] Seeking fellow Bambi lesbian for longterm relationship!
A "Bambi" lesbian is someone who prefers to express love and affection through nonsexual means, such as cuddling, kissing, hugging, and spending time together. **So basically, I’m super affectionate but I have no interest in sex!** I know that’s a dealbreaker for many so I prefer to be very upfront about it ❤️
Anywho, hi!
My goal is a longterm, romantic relationship and I’d love to meet someone that wants the same.
I’m a natural introvert but I'm quite chatty. I much prefer voice calls over text messages. I almost always cry over animated movies; The Wild Robot was the latest one that absolutely wrecked me. I LOVE board games, pop culture and horror movies. Naturally a homebody, but an “adventurous” homebody. I prefer experiences to material possessions so I’m always open to trying a new activity or exploring a new place.
I really thrive with a partner who likes keeping the conversation going and staying connected. I know words like "clingy" get a bad rap, but honestly, that kind of consistent presence really helps me feel grounded. Maybe “attentive” is a better way to put it? But basically, text me, call me, poke me, blah to me about your special interest 😂 I promise you’re not being too much! I’m also not really interested in going super slowly. Not saying I want to U-haul, but if I connect with someone, I’m one of those people that likes to be all in.
Kindness, open communication and financial maturity are qualities I bring to the table so I'm looking for those as well. I own my own home and have a decent career. I have ADHD and am medicated for it, but it does affect my memory and recollection (brain fog) so I require some patience please 😊
**Not particularly interested in**: having children (can be discussed), drugs or smoking of any kind, organized religion, heavy drinking, any conservative views (i'm basically a socialist, woohoo).
**Location**: OH, USA. Looking for someone that's within driving distance and is also *enthusiastic* about meeting up irl, because I do require in person interaction to form any realistic emotional connection! Regardless, the ultimate goal would be to close the distance between us eventually.
All of a sudden Read Aloud feature is greyed out?
I was using the Read Aloud feature last night. It was working great. I decided to switch to a new voice. The feature then crashed and is now greyed out no matter what I do. I've cleared my cache, done a Repair install, restarted my PC, and reset the browser settings. I'm baffled. Is there a way to fix this? Does changing the voice break it forever??
