The Jewel - Indian Food, Toledo

Url: https://thejeweloftoledo.com/

Address: 7406 Central Avenue, Toledo, OH 43617

This restaurant recently changed locations, causing us to think it closed. Much to our delight, it's open. Years of great food, and service, we decided to celebrate the 4th of July by embracing the mixing pot that is America in all its wonderful flavors. If you are looking for good Indian food, check these guys out.

I am not compensated for this review in any way, and paid for my own meal.

Ohio Supreme Court upholds utility commission decision allowing coal plant bailout fee - GoP

"The Ohio Supreme Court upheld a decision last week that, according to its challengers, allowed utilities to overcharge customers to the tune of roughly $115 million. It brings an end to a narrow dispute that started in 2021 but has its roots in the Ohio House Bill 6 scandal.

Two groups challenged a fee, established by H.B. 6 and tacked onto Ohioans’ utility bills, to bailout two coal plants.

That rider allowed the plants’ owners — AEP Ohio, Duke Energy, and Dayton Power and Light — to earn a profit despite operating at a loss.

After the bribery scheme that advanced H.B. 6 came to light, the challengers insisted it would be improper to allow the companies to charge ratepayers for prop up the coal plants.

In the intervening years, state lawmakers came around to that idea. In 2025, they repealed the bailout as part of a major utilities overhaul, Ohio House Bill 15."

Can you book a Lyft from Toledo to DEARBORN? DTW

Hey guys. I'd really appreciate your help with this one. I have an exam scheduled next month at Uni of Toledo and wanted to travel from DTW (Wayne to be specific) to Toledo and back to DTW (I work and live close to DTW). I was wondering if booking a Lyft from Toledo is as feasible as it is from here? I'd be free by 4 pm and would really love to head back home ASAP but I'd be scared if I could not get a Lyft ride since I don't have an alternate option since I know no one here who can drive me back.

Thanks in advance.

4th of July blues

Quick rundown is this: My girlfriend is out of town, and 4th of July is kind of our thing, so it's got me down and I don't have anything to do today/night. I'm 18, so no bars, and I don't really just want to go to a local firework show by myself.

How do I beat this mood? Where could I go or what can I do?

New slice on the block: Dough & Co PizzAria joins downtown Toledo community

New slice on the block: Dough & Co PizzAria joins downtown Toledo community

Tyler Scherting thinks of himself as the Rain Man of flavor.
This is the energy he’s bringing to his new concept, Dough & Co PizzAria, 329 N. Huron St., which he hopes to open in mid-July. The space formerly housed Hamburger Mary’s before it closed in February.

The owner has been in the food industry for more than 20 years, he said, managing eateries in five different states. Now, the Toledo native felt he wanted to bring his decades of experience to his own establishment.

From small plates and salads to artisan pizzas, pasta dishes, and sandwiches, Scherting said the goal with the space is to offer top-tier ingredients to guests and support local when possible. A kids' menu with pizza, pasta, and sandwich options is also available.

All of the dough is made in-house — hence the name — including the bread for the sandwiches, the pizza dough, and the cinnamon roll on the dessert menu, topped with mascarpone icing and granola crunch.

“It’s thin, but it's airy,” Scherting said of the pizza crust. “It's just really cared for. There are a few places in the area that do have these processes; we're just the best at it.”
A couple of signature pies on the menu are the Toledo Gold: a pesto base with paper-thin Yukon Gold potatoes, caramelized onions, mozzarella cheese, and fresh parsley, and the Devil’s Hive, which has San Marzano tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, house-made hot honey, and ricotta. Three other signature pies and a build-your-own option are available, too.

“Your taste buds have a little party every time you take a bite,” Scherting said of the pizza offerings, noting sweetness comes from the cold-fermented dough, acidity from the sauce, and a savory bite from the cheese.
A chicken parmesan sandwich, turkey and provolone — with Perrysburg-made Garlic Expressions vinaigrette on top — and a steak philly are some staple sandwiches offered. A Caesar salad, classic Bolognese, garlic knots, and bruschetta are also part of the menu.

“We're just here to deliver a quality product to the local community in this growing downtown atmosphere,” the owner said. “We're just excited to become part of the downtown Toledo community.”

A group effort
Scherting is opening the space with Shane Bell, managing chef partner, and Logan Thieroff, managing partner. The trio met while working together at Old Bag of Nails Pub in East Toledo and started thinking of opening a restaurant together at the beginning of the year.

Making pizza is a passion for Bell, he said, noting he hopes Dough & Co can become the “community standard” for quality pie.

“The food's gonna speak for itself, I have no doubt about that,” the Toledo-based chef said, who has been working in the industry for 13 years. “I think it's going to be a game changer for downtown.”

As managing partner, Thieroff is helping to open the downtown restaurant, but is also the vision behind its craft cocktail menu.

With years of experience bartending at local establishments like Toledo Spirits and now as the assistant general manager at Old Bag of Nails Pub, he said becoming a partner at Dough & Co feels like a natural next step.
Some of the beverages — like Kodachrome, a whiskey cocktail, and Summer Breeze, a fruity offering using Toledo Spirits Heart of Glass Strawberry Vodka — are inspired by songs, with Thieroff striving to make the drinks taste like the music sounds.

“I have a bunch of cocktail books,” he said of other forms of inspiration. “On my notebook here, I have a bunch of cocktail builds. ... I just look through that, I read a bunch, and then I just throw it together.”

Thieroff plans to change the cocktail menu every few months, he said, and feature seasonal offerings as well.
There’s an upstairs space at the restaurant with a full bar that he hopes can eventually be used as an event space, or even as a place to host cocktail classes or serve as a speakeasy of sorts.

“I just hope people enjoy this,” Thieroff said of Dough & Co. “It's really good pizza, and I'm hoping it’s really good cocktails.”

Who is responsible for maintaining the yards of abandoned properties?

I'm wondering if the city is responsible for weeds in the yards of abandoned properties overgrowing onto public sidewalks or does the city weasel out of the responsibility for maintaining abandoned properties that are still technically owned by long lost homeowners and landlords? I've been bitten by 12 ticks this year because of the overgrown weeds an grass that cover the sidewalks on both sides of Stillman st by the corner of East Broadway. Its literally weeds and grass up to my bellybutton and I'm 5'8. I've been on two separate scripts of doxycycline because of the bites, one script for 14 days, the second for 21 days. Both times I had to go to the emergency room to acquire the prescriptions because no urgent care was comfortable treating me, so in addition to my fucked up gut microbiome, now I owe almost $300 in medical bills for those ER visits because I'm yet to meet my deductible for the year. I even tested for elevated levels of lyme when I was treated at the ER for the first symptomatic bite. Its hard to avoid walking on those parts of the sidewalk because its on both sides of Stillman and I have to cut across the road to avoid the overgrowth, and depending on the time of day that's not always possible. I tried to call engage toledo for answers, but i was the 131st caller in line so I figured id come here first.

Longtime skate shop kickflips into downtown Toledo

Longtime skate shop kickflips into downtown Toledo

Summarize

A beloved skate shop is rolling into a new downtown location.
Just Skateboarding is leaving its longtime Perrysburg location and moving to 617 Adams St., as new ownership looks to build a bigger hub for the area’s growing skating scene.
“I’ve always seen the heart of the skateboarding community in Toledo to be downtown,” said Wade Vickers, the store’s new owner.
The move marks a new chapter for the 30-year-old business. Founded by Scott Tutak in 1996, the store has long served as a gathering place for local skaters.
Mr. Vickers’ connection to Just Skateboarding stretches back decades, beginning with a childhood fascination sparked by the 1980s film Back to the Future.
As a child in Perrysburg, he said he remembers the rattle of a wooden board beneath his feet, the rush of racing through Toledo streets, and the pull of a skate shop where the thing he loved seemed to fill every corner.
“To work at a skate shop was everything,” he said. “I was surrounded by skateboarding, talked about skateboarding, and was involved with it in all aspects of my life.”
Mr. Vickers later worked at Just Skateboarding as a teen, even competing on the shop’s skate team. Now, he said, he saw the chance to carry the shop into its next era while keeping it in the hands of people who grew up through the local skate scene.
The new downtown location will double the shop’s current footprint and include an indoor ramp, giving skaters a place to drop in when winter pushes them off the streets.
Being downtown also puts the shop closer to skaters across the city, and to the streets and spots skaters have used for decades.
Brendo Schack, Just Skateboarding’s store manager, said the move is a natural next step for a business that has shaped both his life and the local skateboarding community.
“We’re still here and there’s still a community that’s thriving,” he said. “Being able to manage this store is like a dream come true.”
Staying true to its name, Mr. Schack said the shop will continue to sell everything a skater could need — from boards and specialty shoes to apparel, accessories, and artwork created by local skateboarders.
“It’s still in the hands of skateboarders — owned, operated, and run by skateboarders from here,” he said.
Longtime customer Justin Lecompte said the move is bittersweet but promising.
Mr. Lecompte, who has shopped at Just Skateboarding for about 20 years, called the store a home and the flagship of Toledo skateboarding.
“Toledo has a lot to offer for skateboarding, but we’re just on the cusp of really exploring that,” he said.
Kyle Boyers, owner of Ridge & River Outdoor Gear and Ski Shop, said he’s excited about the skateboard shop moving in next door.
“We’re looking forward to another store that serves outdoor communities and revives downtown,” he said.
Just Skateboarding plans to open its downtown location by the end of the summer, Mr. Vickers said. Once there, the shop will continue supporting the community and hosting events.
His larger goal is to give Toledo skaters a stronger home base — and make the city a stop on the broader skateboarding map.
“We plan on making Toledo a skateboarding destination that everybody can be a part of,” he said.
