Seeking advice for visiting with food allergy

Hi everyone!

My partner and I are traveling to Portugal (Algarve) and Spain (Andalusia) in a couple weeks. We are SOOOO excited.

My partner has a severe life threatening dairy allergy - we carry an epi pen and he is sensitive to cross contamination. This includes milk, butter, cheese, etc. He also cannot eat red meat unless it is cooked well well done (something with the milk protein in cow’s blood).

We LOVE food and we want to really experience local and traditional cuisines. But this is the first time he has traveled to a country where English is not the language. He is understandably very anxious and nervous about traveling with his allergy.

I figured I’d hop on here to see if anyone has any advice or insight for navigating food during our trip. Any tips would be appreciated, including:

- traditional/popular local foods we should look out for because they ARE usually prepared with dairy products
- specific dishes that generally do NOT use dairy products that we can mark as possibly safer
- how we can best explain the allergy without offending

Bonus, we also used ChatGPT to translate a little blurb we plan to print out on cards to explain the allergy. We would be SO grateful is someone who speaks Spanish or Portuguese can review to make sure it makes sense/let us know if we should add or remove anything for any reason.

ANY HELP OR INSIGHT WOULD BE SO SO SO SO SO APPRECIATED. THANK YOU TO ANYONE WHO READ THIS WHOLE POST ❤️🙏

Is this unrealistic?

My partner and I just decided to go all out and extend our original vacation by a couple of days and, with more time, decided to go to Portugal/Spain instead of our original destination.

This is our first vacation in a very long time and we both work very demanding jobs. So, we may be a little overly ambitious and unrealistic with the itinerary we drew out. I would love to hear thoughts and advice.

We want to start with a beautiful beach vibe to start off the trip with relaxation and then go hard on history and culture in Spain.

Also would love any recs for accommodations - would prefer to support local businesses/immerse into culture or history

Sept. 2 Lisbon, landing in the early afternoon (1 night)
Sept. 3-5 Lagos by train (3 nights)
Sept. 6-7 Seville by car (2 nights)
Sept. 8 Cordoba by car (1 night)
Sept. 9-10 Granada by car (2 nights)
Sept. 11-12 Toledo by car (2 nights)
Sept. 13 flight out of Madrid, drive in from Toledo

Need thoughts on spontaneous change of plans

Hi everyone!

Initially posted in this group about a shorter trip during the same time period with my partner. We just decided to say f it and added a couple of days and are now going to Portugal/Spain.

We want to start with a beautiful beach vibe to start off the trip with relaxation and then go hard on history and culture in Spain.

We came up with this very very rough schedule. I’d love to hear suggestions/thoughts on whether any places on the list are a must, can be dropped, or even swapped for another city. Any input would be great :)

Also would love any recs for accommodations - would prefer to support local businesses/immerse into culture or history

Recs for beach/adventure trip week of September

Flying out of CA during the first week of September. 6-7 days including flights. Going with my husband and it’s both of our first vacations in years. We both work 75 hour weeks on average. I’m struggling to pick a place probably because it’s been so long and we REALLY need a break.

Looking for a hot, beach vacation that offers outdoor activities/adventure. Would love a cultural experience, see some historical sites/ruins.

We have been looking at Fiji. I just want to experience something new and have already been all over Mexico, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Costa Rica.

Budget is around $4.5k
