Fun things to do in Accra (Jazz, cooking, and carpentry)

Hi all - we are from the US and just spent two weeks in Ghana, and wanted to share a couple of the fun things we did in Accra that weren't in our guidebooks.

  1. +233 Jazz Club - this was a really fun way to see live music, they had friendly service and good food and drinks.
  2. Gold Coast Cooking Class - had a great experience in Accra with this cooking class. Highly recommend if you're traveling in Accra and would like a fun and local cultural experience! Excellent host shares her home and knowledge. Find her on Google Maps.
  3. Fantasy Coffins - this was in our guidebooks but was a little trickier to find than expected. The best one was Erico Carpentry shop (on Google Maps), as they had the most interesting array, but the young man at Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop (labeled "Billy's Workshop" on Google Maps for some reason) was incredibly friendly and gave us a great overview of the history of this tradition. He is the grandson of Kane Kwei, the original creator of these coffins according to what we were told and read. We took a Bolt out and then a TroTro back to Accra.

That's all! As out of country travelers we always like to share some of our favorite things. I will add that in general, having traveled to over 30 countries, we genuinely found the people and culture in Ghana to be probably the warmest and most welcoming we've ever experienced! We also visited Eastern Volta, Kwahu, and Kumasi.
