Finally tried custodes after using tyranids, BA, GSC, DG and this team seems easy to use with a 14-2 win ratio. Those 2 losses were in the beginning to orks and black legion.
Kariyan and Tyrith are vanguard. On turn one, kariyan can move 4 with rapid assault and tyrith can move 5 with her active. On short maps, this can attack and set up a wall. On long maps, its a fortress.
Each turn one, try to set up so kariyan and tyrith are front (or on point capture hex), aesoth is at most 2 spaces away for his passive, and trajann MUST use his active. This triggers aesoths passive for armor buff and tyriths return fire (theoretically). Trajann gains a block buff from this. Atlacoya must stay back as she is clean up.
On the enemies turn, this block buff and armor seems to tank rushes from orks and nerfed BA so far. In most cases, the movement from tyrith and kariyan secure 2 hexes even when going second and the enemy not wanting to overextend their position on turn 1. The duos resilience trait makes this extremely frustrating for opponents. If possible, try to use this before tyrith and kariyan attack on short maps.
By now, aesoth usually stuns a major enemy and prevents the active. Trajann just hits but buffs if enemy is next to someone that used their active this turn (aesoth). Kariyan sweeps using his active (most opponents target kariyan or trajann due to their placement and due to tyriths passive).
You should win by now if mixing in hex capture. If not, put atlacoya next to a custodes and her active does direct damage plus a buff for everytime an active from a custodes was used this match. If your opponents are psykers, aesoths buff doesnt help with armor and atlacoyas passive takes over and reduces psyker dmg.
