Lucky recipient of an operational upgrade on a United codeshare with Air Canada: CPH to YUL

As stated in the title, I was flying back from Copenhagen and got the push notification about 15 minutes before boarding that I was getting upgraded from Premium Economy to Business. As I’m only Silver on Mileage Plus, and was unable to bid for any upgrades (thank you Concur), I’m assuming it happened because I was on a solo reservation. Either way, got to ride the 8 hour flight in AC Signature and it gave me the opportunity to compare AC with my previous experiences in Polaris on return transatlantic flights.

Quick opinions: Hard product: I think I like the storage in Polaris better. The little cubby is more functional and I felt like it was easier to get organized to charge my phone and watch on the way home. I found the AC signature lay-flat seat a bit easier to sleep in than Polaris. I like that the mattress pads were already on our seat so I didn’t have to ask for it. I also like that the aisle facing arm rest can be lowered allowing me to sit cross legged or stretched out depending on what’s most comfortable at the time. The massage function is cute but doesn’t really do anything. The tv monitor was a nicer look on AC too.

Soft product: Wine selection in Polaris is better, mid flight snacks in the galley are better, and sundae cart is 💯. For AC Signature, dinner and lunch dishes are way better. Lunch came with a small box of fancy Danish chocolates which was a nice touch paying homage to our departure point. My only complaint is AC served us this beautiful asparagus with the hot appetizer. While delicious, >!the business class bathroom reeked of asparagus for the rest of the flight.!< Amenity kits were about a draw as they both come with standard eye mask, socks, lotion, toothbrush, etc.

Overall, a very nice unexpected experience on the way home, that will likely never happen again.

Mesero - 12 South

Since restaurants, and 12 South in general, have been a hot button issue, I just want to give a shoutout to Mesero in 12 South. We walked to lunch since I was working from home today, and in an area where it seems like “Mexican” restaurants just keep popping up like weeds, Mesero is actually legit.

It’s got a great vibe; feels a bit upscale but not pretentious.

The food is quite good. If I’m gonna have a “sit down” meal, then I am a enchilada or chile relleno person, and they are both great. Especially, the mole enchilada. You also get this complementary salsa sampler when you sit down; all three are excellent.

Drink prices are about standard these days for Nashville prices, but are well made. I normally get the jalepeña or the blackberry pineapple, but because it was hot today I tried the froze. While I am not usually a froze person, Mesero’s froze is freaking good and it will floor you.

I don’t normally post publicly about the restaurants we like in town for a number of reasons (although, maybe I should. For instance, I did ‘12 months of date nights’ for my husband this year as a Christmas present. Basically, he pulls an envelope each month and inside there’s a restaurant that we haven’t been to yet and we book a date there. Happy to post about that if people are actually interested.)

Anyway, the point is that it feels like Mesero is getting slept on because it’s at the end of the street with Fonda (expensive + mid), Bartaco (overrated) and the disaster that used to be Emery’s/Nashville Street Taco.
