Navamedic has launched Virono®, described as the first over-the-counter single-dose tablet for recurrent cold sores (HSV-1).

The treatment uses a mucoadhesive buccal tablet with aciclovir that’s applied once at the first sign of an outbreak, aiming to simplify treatment compared to creams that require multiple daily applications.

The company plans rollout across Nordic and European markets as demand for easier HSV self-care options grows.

A new report highlights encouraging Phase 3 results for pritelivir in immunocompromised patients with difficult-to-treat HSV infections, especially cases resistant to acyclovir. Compared to currently used treatments like foscarnet and cidofovir, pritelivir showed better healing outcomes, reduced viral activity, and fewer patients stopping treatment because of side effects.

Pritelivir works differently from older antivirals by targeting the helicase-primase complex of HSV, which may help overcome resistance problems seen with traditional therapies. Researchers say this could become the first major new HSV treatment approved in more than two decades if it receives FDA approval.

Important note: pritelivir is not a cure for herpes, but it could represent a major improvement for people with severe or resistant HSV infections, particularly immunocompromised individuals who currently have very limited options.
