Buddy 380 tail troubles

I still havent gotten my Buddy flying because the tail is not working properly. The pitch slider slides fine when on the tail spindle, but once attached to the blade grip ball links, the whole assembly gets very stiff. Especially as it nears the tail boom (inconsistent tightness). I've changed the spindle, thrust bearings and all the spacers and still, I connect the pitch slider and it gets all stiff. Any tips with what I should do?? I'm really running out of ideas and my frustration levels are rising.

The way I know its a problem is because during setup of the ikon, when the tail pitch slider went inward, the servo would start buzzing. Upon further inspection I found out it is very stiff and gets stiffer as it goes inward.

Help with stripped screw in tail spindle

My Buddy 380 journey continues as I ask for help on my next issue. Thank you to those who helped on my last post, I used the zip tie method and got it better but still not perfect (11° and 13°). Might need a swash plate leveler to do it right.

Anyway, explanation below but I need to unscrew my tail spindle, which requires a driver on both ends as it spins. Unfortunately, I did the rookie mistake of using a allen key on one side and stripped one of the screws. I also think the last guy used some strong ass compound on these screws because I cant undo it for the life of me. Now, one screw is stripped and I need to hold both screws at the same time to unscrew it, which is impossible cos one is stripped, and the whole spindle just spins. What can I do? I can barely even fit pliers in the blade grip.

As to why I'm doing this, I noticed my servo was buzzing hard when the pitch slider was on the side closest to the tail while setting it up in ikon. I then started playing around with the tail disconnected, and realized it gets tighter as the pitch slider approaches, creating uneven pressure on one side. Upon further inspection, it only does it when connected to the blade grips, and slides perfectly fine when on its own. So I'm getting that the tail shaft is straight but the spindle is bent causing the pitch slider to slide unevenly as it is connected to the blade grips. Let me know if this makes sense. So I gotta fix this before I keep going... already making an order before I fly 😅

Blade leveling help (Ikon setup)

So I've been doing my first setup of an iKon (Brain) 2 on my new SAB Buddy 380, and although everyone says its "easy" I'm still having a hard time with my first run through. Im sure it will be better next time but its tedious and taking a while.

Anyway, I spent my night leveling the swashplate (doing my best by eye, I dont know how to know of its perfect). And then I zeroed the blades which went fine. Next I set positive and negative pitch of ~13° which went well as well. Finally, I go to test cyclic and when I do aileron to one side its at around 14° and then to the other side its only ~11°. How is that possible and what did i do wrong? How can it be fixed so I can move forward? I'm shocked it can be that far off after all the centering and leveling i did.

Anyway thanks for any help. The video should help show the issue, the last two being the problematic ones. Btw its is in "check mode" which means it pushes each movement to the maximum rather than allowing you to smoothly move it.

Say hello to my little friend

My new Buddy. Found an incredible deal on marketplace and couldn't pass up on it. This my first step into "big" helis. Once I saw it in person, i couldn't resist its classic SAB look in mint condition as compared to the Raw 420 DD I spoke about in my other posts. Its just too clean and felt like the perfect step up size for me. Especially with all the other stuff it came with as well as the scorpion electronics. Excited to get this set up and do some real flying!

What do you guys think? Any tips for the setup before I get out flying? Thanks to all who helped make my decision.

Thoughts on SAB Raw 420 DD

Wanted to simplify my last post and specifically ask what are people's thoughts and experiences with the SAB Raw 420 direct drive helis and if they recommend it as a step up from 200 series helis?

Some people told me they really like the Buddy 380 which is the other option I'm looking at but I'm just curious if maybe I should get both. Any thoughts on the 380 would be great to hear as well.

Kind of buying one of these in a rush without too much research because the deals are going quick so looking to get some help with my decision.

Thanks!

Help picking heli

I guy from whom I bought my last heli recently put up a lot of a helis for sale, notably two buddy 380s, two raw 420s, and a kraken 580 (blue and yellow). The prices are all reasonable and each come with two batteries along with a mix of different parts, some including canopies and booms. Every deal is good.

As someone coming from a s1 and 230s and looking to upgrade, and like buying used helis, im trying to decide which is the best option for me. Here are the deals:

The buddy i think is cool but its an older model and is probably not a reliable option to learn on. The raw 420 sounds like the best all around option, they are the direct drive models. One comes with an aluminum boom (and an extra one) and the other comes with the upgraded carbon fiber boom but no extra.

Finally, the kraken 580 is a beautiful bigger heli that I love the look of, and would love to own one day. What do you think of my idea of buying the raw 420 (if so which one, blue and yellow with carbon fiber boom and kay servos or white and orange with extra aluminum boom and torq servos), and possibly buying the kraken 580 along with it to fly maybe next year, if the price is right. And are the buddies worth considering? He can add or remove an ikon 2 or vbar to all of them.

Pictures included to make it simpler. If you want pics of the buddies let me know, I just doubt anyone will recommend them. Thanks!

Recommendations for next heli size?

Right now I'm park flying a s1 and blade 230s. The s1 is great but its too small when outdoor flying (I'm not skilled enough to keep it all within a 25 foot box). The 230s is much better for that, but its not nearly as crisp as the s1 when practicing 3d manoevers, although its gotten better by bumping up the headspeed to 85%+.

I'm thinking of getting a s2 as a bigger but still performant park flyer. But im wondering if I should jump straight into a 400-600 size and join a local club instead. Or get the s2 and fly that for a while and my next heli can be a 400-600 size.

Now if picking a 400-600 size, what do you recommend? I know the heli model options, but curious if its worth getting a 400 size to save on battery and parts cost, or its not worth stopping at this level and just skipping right away to a 500+ size? For example, getting a raw 420 or rs4 or going straight to a sab kraken 580 or raw 580? And is it also worth it to take the plunge and join a local club because I wont be flying those big boys at the park, but I like the convenience of just taking a short drive or bike ride to the park...

Anyway, curious about your thoughts on this probably repetitive question 😅

Thanks

Goosky s1 doesn't pirouette steadily

Whenever I yaw in either direction, the heli looses its steady hover and starts leaning in a direction. For example, if i yaw nose right, it starts moving forward and away from me. So I have to correct it. And if I do fast pirouettes it will slowly lose control and flying away quickly.

My question is, is this a normal reaction? Does yaw need to he corrected with cyclic? Or is this something I can tune. Because when I see people on YouTube pirouette very fast on their big helis they stay exactly where they started. Even my 230s doesnt seem to move much from its original location when I yaw. I can't imagine everyone is correcting their pirouette with constant cyclic adjustment...

So yeah is this normal and if not what can I do to fix it?

Flew upside down for the first time!

That's right, from flying simulators 15 years ago as a kid at the hobby shop, and thinking flying a heli upside down would be awesome - I finally did it. To be clear, I own started truly flying helis this summer, and turned SAFE mode off about a month ago. Learned my orientations half decently, practiced some figure 8s, and recently started actually flying (not just surviving) my heli in normal mode. And something overcame me and said, today we flip the heli. It worked! I did it on the S1 btw. I didn't crash but in my excitement afterwards I let the heli get close to the ground and clipped it 🤣 but those damn S1s just never give up.

PS. I've been hating my 230s because it flies like a boat but finally getting able to do some smooth flying with it today was quite nice. Any tips on tuning it would be great.

Hope to be here a while!

How to start progressing

Finally got a working heli (Blade 230 s smart), because my goosky s1 was great but I broke the anti rotation guide and there's no goosky parts available in my area for months now. Anyway, flying this thing is scary as compared to the s1, although the s1 is more snappy this thing just feels big!

I'm flying around in safe mode to start and already have a bit experience with this kind of flying so I feel pretty comfortable. Im wondering if I just need to jump straight into non-safe mode and just practice hovering instead of just trolling around on safe mode. I'm guessing it will be boring for a while but much more rewarding once I can actually fly the heli the way it was meant to be flown. So that mixed in with practicing on the Sim is the way to go?

Thanks

9 Day Itinerary Check

Hello friends,

I'm finalizing my trip planning and honestly had to take a week away because I was so overwhelmed with the unlimited number of options that seem to be available (in terms of transportation methods, towns to stop/visit, travel path, etc.). At this point, I think I just need to take the path that makes the most sense to me, even if it may not be perfect, go with it and book it. Here it is and I'd love for you guys to give any last input. This itinerary is less so about activities and more so about where I'm staying and traveling to:

Day 1: land at noon in Oslo

Day 2: Oslo

Day 3: Begin journey towards Bergen. Train to Myrdal > Train to Flam (up until this point is now confirmed) > Boat through Naerofjord to Gudvangen > Bus to Voss. Stay overnight in Voss

Day 4: Half day in Voss > train to Bergen

Day 5-7: Bergen

Day 8, 9: I need to get back to Oslo and not sure the best way to do that. I can take the direct train I believe which would take up a whole day. Or I can fly I suppose but I don't know the costs. My flight leaves at 3am on day 10. Do I need to give myself a buffer?

Other questions: is it worth on more day in Oslo over Bergen? Should I leave Bergen early by train on Day 9 to give myself the rest of the day to spend more time in Oslo, rather than at the beginning? Thank you.

Norway in a Nutshell Questions and Tips

Hello I am planning on going to Norway at the end of August for an 8 day trip and from my research doing a Oslo - Bergen journey is a good way to spend my first time in Norway with my given time frame. To make things simpler, I have learned about the Norway in a Nutshell package which essentially groups all the train, ferry, and bus rides you need to have a scenic route to Bergen. I have some questions:

  1. Do you recommend using this package instead of booking all the modes of transportation on my own?

  2. Is booking everything on my own cheaper than the decently pricey 7600 NOK they are asking for the package?

  3. The cities you stop in are Flam, Gudvangen, and Voss. To break the almost 12 hour trip up, what city do you recommend staying in the most?

  4. There are two routes offered as part of the package. One seems straight forward while the other doubles back in some way, and appears to be more expensive. See the screenshot below. Which do you recommend?

Thanks for any tips you can provide!

I've thought of a somewhat last minute trip to Norway in August and the best deal im finding gives me only 7 days. I realize its a bit short and doesnt give much headroom, but I dont have too many affordable flight options that dont take 20+ hours so thats the best option ive found so far.

Im thinking of doing a somewhat basic Oslo -> Flam -> Bergen route. 2 days in Oslo, day travel to Bergen (dont fully understand the train route to Bergen through Flam). And then spend a few days in Bergen to see the fjords and do a hike and such.

Does this make sense? Am I wasting a trip coming for such a short period? Is there something else I should squeeze into the plan or change the plan completely?

Thanks for any advice
