Couple Aussies coming in to Norway - help 😂

Ahoyo local Norwegians!

My partner and I are planning a trip over to the northern side of the world from mid December.
We’re in our mid 30s.

Our first stop is Iceland, then on to Norway for Christmas/Yuletide! We may even get there just in time for solstice (dates not locked in yet)
Then on to Ireland and Scotland after.

We aren’t the touristy kind of people that want to check off all the standard stuff. We want to do some, but, are keen to hear from locals about what there is to do, and get amongst it, hang out where it’s chill and meet new people with fun experiences.

Looking from locals advice on what to do with our time there!

No stopping + danger of rockfall

Every time I drive past Geiranger, I find people lounging about, enjoying the view, in an active rockfall zone where it is illegal to stop. Based on how people react when I advise them to move on, I don’t think they’ve noticed or understood the road sign. In most countries it is used to ban parking, but in Norway when it is combined with the warning sign for rockfalls, it bans all stopping for a certain distance in order to save lives.

Usually, we accept the danger of rockfall along our roads, but there are a few places where the danger is so high that all stopping is banned. You are obligated to drive through as efficiently as possible. The Geiranger road has at least two of these, the first for one km, the second for three. There are a couple along the Hardanger fjord, and a few in Sogn that I know of. There used to be many more, but most such roads have been replaced by tunnels. I remember one place in Møre og Romsdal, where the parents demanded two school buses, so siblings could ride separately to school. That way, not all the kids would be lost if the mountain side came down. The government provided a boat instead while the tunnel was constructed.

Only the most extreme places get this combination of signs. The warning sign for rockfalls placed alone is common, and there you are expected to use common sense. For instance by not camping under the cliffs, and getting out of there ASAP if you hear rumbling or see loose stones in the road. For the latter; please call 177 and let them know. It is often the first sign of a larger event. I don’t know how to explain it for people from flat countries; this is not me being alarmist or trying to scare tourists, but rather our reality that we deal with. One of my local roads is usually closed 5-10 times a year, for up to a week every time, due to rockfalls. Odda is usually isolated for a few days every spring, due to rockfalls and landslides blocking all roads. E134 to Haugesund has been closed for a long time due to a massive rockfall destroying the road.

The extreme rockfall danger along the west coast is due to geology: the ancient Precambrian gneiss has been folded and turned on its side. When the softer layers erode, they cause a slip zone for the harder layers. The Tafjord tsunami was caused by this, and the coming Geiranger tsunami will be caused by the same happening in Åkneset.

Vaping in Norway

I am a smoker who has tried desperately to give up cigarettes. I’m currently vaping. I vape probably five times a day. I’m currently on a cruise and it’s telling me I cannot take Vapes. I’m sure in Norway that means I’m gonna have to buy cigarettes because I can’t really go a date without nicotine. Are they serious? Do they want me to go back onto cigarettes because I don’t want to smoke cigarettes I want to continue vaping to try and get me off this stuff. I don’t understand the law on how this is working because it seems completely backwards to me. I’m from the UK.

Need some advice for wildcamping in Norway in August (setup, maybe trip advice)

Hey guys, first off congrats for making it to the quarter finals in the WC.

I was hoping to get some advice/or peace of mind for the setup we (girlfriend and me) have for a two week wildcamping trip in Norway starting on the 8. of August.

I am wondering if the sleep setup I have planned is going to be sufficient.
I have a nemo disco 30 so around 4 degree celsius comfort rating paired with s2s pursuit sleeping pad with an r rating of 3.0

I was thinking about maybe getting the reactor fleece liner should it get really cold and of course longsleeve underwear for sleeping.

My girlfriend got a -5degree (i think) sleeping bag and pad rated r 4 as she is a really cold sleeper.

For tent I got a pretty good deal on an MSR Tindheim 3p.

So our plan is to start from Göteborg and then drive through norway for two weeks.

I was thinking about using the car to get somewhere beautiful and then leave it behind hike for 1-2 hours setup camp stay there for two nights and then move on and drive to the next location.

It is really a dream trip for me.

If you have recommendations for places we should visit that would be amazing. I am thinking we probably won't be going up to far north as only I am driving and I want to spend more time in nature then behind the steering wheel so maybe 4-6 hours of driving every two days.

Thanks for your help greetings from Austria.

8-day campervan roundtrip from Bergen (first time) with my girlfriend – rate my setup, answer my concerns, and help us build the ultimate route

Hi everyone!

My girlfriend (both 21) and I are finally making what has been my dream trip for years, and I'd really appreciate advice from people who actually know Norway.

We'll arrive in Bergen on August 17 and have 8 days before returning the camper in Bergen.

After weeks of comparing every possible option, we decided to rent a 2008 VW Transporter campervan with:

  • diesel
  • diesel heater
  • inside kitchen
  • 20 L fresh water tank
  • storage
  • roof ventilation
  • privacy windows
  • camping chairs/table
  • bed (about 120 cm wide)

The plan is to wild camp where it's allowed and use campsites every 2–3 days for showers, water refill, and a proper reset.

Our priorities (in order)

  1. The most breathtaking scenery possible.
  2. Hidden gems over tourist traps (although we'll still visit some famous places).
  3. Amazing hikes (medium difficulty is fine).
  4. Kayaking somewhere beautiful.
  5. Great drone locations.
  6. Cozy evenings in the camper.

We're not trying to speedrun Norway. We'd rather spend an afternoon at one incredible place than tick off ten attractions.

Questions

1. What route would YOU take?

If you had exactly 8 days starting and ending in Bergen in August, what route would you choose?

Would you go towards:

  • Hardangerfjord?
  • Sognefjord?
  • Loen?
  • Geiranger?
  • Aurland?
  • somewhere completely different?

I'd love to see your ideal itinerary.

2. Daily driving

Is 150 km/day realistic, or will we naturally end up driving much more?

We're completely happy with slow travel if it means seeing better places.

3. Wild camping

We'll always be respectful.

How easy is it to find beautiful overnight spots with a Transporter?

Any favourite apps or strategies?

4. Food

We'll cook almost every meal ourselves.

What meals worked best for you in a small camper kitchen?

Any Norwegian supermarket foods we absolutely shouldn't miss?

5. Water

We have a 20 L fresh water tank.

Is that enough for:

  • brushing teeth
  • washing dishes
  • quick morning/evening wash
  • cooking

between campsite visits every couple of days?

6. Toilets 😅

This is my girlfriend's biggest concern.

I know this sounds silly, but she's never really done the "vanlife" thing.

How do most people handle bathrooms while travelling like this?

Do you mostly use:

  • gas stations
  • supermarkets
  • campsites
  • public toilets
  • nature (only when necessary)

Any advice that would make her feel more comfortable would be hugely appreciated.

7. Things you wish you knew

What's one thing you wish someone had told you before your first Norway camper trip?

Gear we'll bring

  • Drone
  • Professional camera gear
  • Camping chairs
  • Disposable film camera (for memories)
  • Hiking gear

This trip honestly feels unreal to me.

A year ago it was just an idea. Now I'm actually doing it with my girlfriend, and I really want to make the most of these 8 days.

I'd love any route suggestions, hidden gems, hiking recommendations, camping spots, food ideas, or general advice. Even if it's something small that made your own trip better, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks! 🇳🇴🚐

Which town to visit?

I'm visting Norway once more this year by the end of July. So far I have visited Oslo, Bergen, Voss, Trondheim and Bodø. I've hiked in Rago, Hardangervidda, Rondane, and Trollheimen. This year I'll be flying to Bodø once more for a hike in Rago National Park and will then take the train or bus south. My final goal is Oslo for my flight back, but I'm still considering what will happen inbetween - I'm both looking for a hiking region as well as another city to visit. Recommendations?

Is Flåm worth a day trip out from Bergen?

We’ll be getting the train out of Oslo straight to Bergen, where we will spend 4 days. We have a Mostraumen Fjord cruise booked from Bergen on one of the days and considering using another day to do a day trip to Flåm, but looking at the journey times it seems like it would be quite a long day trip (2 hour ish train from Bergen to Myrdal, then the Flamsbana itself being an hour, then we will probably spend at most a couple hours in Flam itself before doing it all over again to head back into Bergen).

Is this worth it or should we figure out something else to do with the extra day?

Skip Lofoten? Need logistics advice

Hi everyone! I’ll be doing a 5-day Norway trip this August with my mom, mainly the classic Oslo–Bergen route. I was thinking of squeezing in Lofoten, but I’m worried it might be too tiring for her.

Current itinerary:
Day 1: Oslo → Voss
Day 2: Flåm & Aurland (zipline + biking)
Day 3: Flam → Bergen (fast ferry)
Day 4: Bergen (→ Bodo then ferry to Lofoten?)
Day 5: Fly home (currently booked from Bergen, but I’m willing to change it to Bodø if that makes more sense).

Would it be feasible to fly to Bodø/Lofoten on Day 4, explore a bit, then fly home the next day on the evening ? Or is it not worth it? We’d appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Allemannsretten

Bergen: 1 afternoon and night

Will be arriving in Bergen at 11:15 am on a Sunday in August. Have a flight out the following morning at 7:50 am to Lofoten.

Will not have a car. Plan to explore the city center in the afternoon/evening, but struggling to decide if it makes stay close to the airport or somewhere in the city center.

Thoughts?

Looking for advice: Vy ticket booked for the wrong date after checkout

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced something similar with Vy.

My wife and I planned our Norway trip: 4–9 July in Bergen, then 9–13 July in Oslo, where we're flying home from.

When I booked our train tickets from Bergen to Oslo, my wife pointed out that the Vy website kept resetting the departure date to "today" (13 June). Because of that, I was very careful to keep changing it back to 9 July. Before paying 5,200 NOK, I even asked my wife to double-check that the date shown at checkout was 9 July, and we were both convinced it was correct.

The only mistake I know I made was not opening the confirmation email immediately. At the time I was receiving flight tickets and Airbnb booking confirmations as well, so when the Vy ticket confirmation came in, I simply assumed everything was fine and didn't open it to verify the details.

Yesterday, on our way to the airport, I checked our tickets and realized they had actually been issued for 13 June instead of 9 July. Since our trip only started on 4 July, there was no way we could have used them.

To avoid the 9 July train selling out, I had to buy another set of tickets, and I've contacted Vy hoping they'll review the situation and refund the original tickets, but there was no feedback yet.

Has anyone experienced the Vy website changing the selected travel date during booking, or had any luck with customer service in a situation like this?

Late July/early August trip

I'm taking my mum on a road trip to Norway in a few weeks. She's always wanted to go and we have 2 weeks and change to drive from South England to Norway.

Right now we have the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk booked and then I was planning on driving through Holland, Belgium, Germany and Denmark before getting the ferry North into Norway.

We don't have anything planned yet once we get there and have a fully built campervan I'm driving so accomodation is irrelevent.

I'm wondering if anyone who lives in Norway or has travelled there has any must see or must do activities they would recommend so I can put together an itinery.

We're up for all sorts so it's more about what's available at this time of the year and if we can fit it in with driving time and location in mind.

Really appreciate any advice, thanks in advance.

Rate my itinerary 1st time traveler

Hi everyone! My wife and I are planning our very first trip to Norway. We completely fell in love with the country through pictures and stories. We are avid hikers and love spending time outdoors. I have modified our itinerary alot of times because I always feel like I am missing out on key experiences! I would greatly appreciate your feedback on our current list, along with any recommendations you might have. We planned on relying on public transportation, but would renting a car be much more reasonable?

Driving Bergen to Voss in the evening? Is this reasonable?

Hi all,

Will be arriving in Bergen at 7:40 pm mid-August via a Wideroe flight. We need to be in Odda by 11am or so the following day for a scheduled tour. We will hire a car in Bergen. Would it be reasonable to drive to Voss after our flight? or try the drive to Odda after the flight?

Thanks in advance - appreciate the thoughts.

Oslo swimming in July

Traveling soon to Oslo and I think my 11 and 13 year olds would enjoy having a swim in the Oslofjord. Debating between a location along the coast such as Sørenga Sjøbad/Operastranda/Tjuvholmen or taking the ferry to one of the islands such as Hovedøya/Langøyene/Gressholmen.

Leaning towards one of the islands, but would love your advice as to what you think kids my childrens age would find the most fun. Thanks!

PDX to Oslo Norway

HELP!!!
Desperately trying to save a vacation
Family members just flew into Oslo Norway but only brought passports not drivers license and cannot get a rental car needed for the vacation
Sending their license via DHS/FedEx will likely take days to weeks but seems like the only option…
Unless… someone possibly traveling to Oslo from Portland in the next couple days would be willing to do me a HUGE favor (also likely make a quick buck) and bring it with them and get it to my sibling
Can’t think of any other options aside from booking a flight myself which seems absurd

Driving Alesund to Geiranger - Is it scary?

I recently returned from 20 days in Norway and am planning my return next summer. I am considering renting a car in Alesund and driving to Geiranger and back. I am nervous with heights and driving on the edge of a mountain. I can make myself do it, but too much of it will not be enjoyable for me. I did drive around Senja so I am used to the unmarked, narrow roads of Norway. Do you think I would do okay or should I take the boat from Alesund to Geiranger instead?

Drive Norway from South to North or North to South?

I am planning on traveling to Norway this summer. I plan to dedicate 4 weeks traveling around Norway. I will be driving around on a motorcycle and will try to hit most of the major sights in Norway. Would you recommend to drive from the north to the south, or from the south to the north? Which way would you enjoy the most?

I could say more about the planning of the trip, but I want people's viewpoint ignoring any specifics. I am very flexible and simply wants a fun road trip.

Also, any tips for saving in on the costs? Then maybe a 4 week trip becomes 5 weeks.

Hut to hut trekking questions

Hi everyone, my friend and I are planning to do a hut-to-hut trek in Jotunheimen in mid-July, and I would love to ask a few questions:

- Is the food provided at the huts sufficient for the hiking day

- What is the cold weather situation, and how many layers are recommended to bring?

- What are the meal times at the huts, and what are the recommended departure times for the trails?
