How did Chinese peasant farmers react to the Great Leap Forward?

From my understanding, the CCP redistributed farmland from landlords to peasants late in the Chinese Civil war and this continued for a few years after the CCP took power. If this is the case, how did those peasants react when Mao implemented collective farming as part of his Great Leap Forward? Was there a carve-out for them or did they have to work on collective farms as well?

Flag of “Mardelva” on floor of the Maryland House of Delegates

The amendment failed.
