What is Wrong with Springfield, Il?

In the past 2 weeks, I’ve needed a few services and the complete lack of competence has been astounding.

First, am moving and wanted to start pest control at my new place. I call a local place, make an appt, wait at my new place for 4 hours and they never show up. I call, leave a vm, they never answer or call me back.

Second, my fridge is on the fritz, so I buy a pre-owned one from a local appliance store. I pay for it, we make plans to have it delivered on Monday. I wait at my new place for 3 hours and they never show. I call, it’s after hours, so I leave a voicemail. The next day, the store calls, says they had an issue with the delivery truck, and can deliver a week later. Cool cool.

Third, I hire a handyman to put new flooring in my new place, just in the bedrooms. Replacing carpet, I get a few quotes, I go with the guy who seemed proactive and seemed to pay attention/seemed competent. Everything seemed fine, but he was running a little late on the work. No biggie. I meet him at the new place, he has about an hour or two til hes done, so I go ahead and pay him and ask him to leave the key when he’s done. Come back 2 days later, guy never finished. Now I have a chunk of floor unfinished, and the trim not set up. He also left a section of the wall with insulation sticking out. He also didn’t leave the key, so I’m going to have to change the locks before moving in. Also, his partner helping him called me a couple of days later and told me he didn’t pay him for any of the work. Wtf.

Come on, Springfield, it’s not that hard to be competent. Get it together.

Right Decision?

I found an outside pregnant stray cat and brought her in about 2 weeks ago. She wasn’t getting along very well with my current cats, but she was settling in fine in general. Meanwhile, my bf and I are breaking up and it’s super messy. I’m moving out in a couple of days, we are at each others throats, not a great situation.

As the kitty has been nesting in, I have been super stressed about her having kittens, what if I’m at work? What if something goes wrong? I’ve never done this before, and it’s so overwhelming right now. There’s no way I could keep all the kittens, I already have too many cats as it is, and I wasn’t sure the next steps to take.

I posted on a Facebook page and was encouraged by several people to drop her off at animal care and control, they work with local rescues and can get her spayed (and the babies aborted), and get her into foster care or adopted. One lady private messaged me and said for every kitten that makes it to gestation, there are kittens waiting for care as the shelter is full. Not exactly sure how she worded it, but basically shelters are full and kittens are waiting for space. If I didn’t take the kittens, they need to be aborted.

This morning, I dropped her off at ACC as a found stray. This will give her the chance to be adopted and not just spayed and released back outside.

I feel so bad. I managed it all wrong. If I was going to have her spayed, I shouldn’t have waited, now she’s further along and it’s riskier. Plus, I miss her, she was so sweet and sour lol.

I’m pro choice, but I still kinda feel like I participated in the killing of her kittens. Plus, will she have a good home? She trusted me and came right to me when I put her in the carrier this morning. I just feel really bad and I miss her. I’m just so overwhelmed. I want her to have a good life. I just don’t know if I did right by her.

Above Ground Tornado Shelter Recommendations?

I have a mobile home and am looking to place an above ground tornado shelter on my property. I live in Chatham, Il.

Any recommendations? Including delivery and installation? Preferably one I can take with me when I (hopefully) buy a house in a few years. TIA

Reasonable Cost for Labor?

I live in a trailer and am having the carpet taken out and replaced in 3 bedrooms with LVP. There is a couple of spots where the subfloor needs fixed, and I’m having “edges” around the room (basically skinny fake wood). The sq ft for all three rooms is approx 340sq ft.

Got a quote from a handyman, labor will be between $1,200-1,400, plus cost of flooring and supplies (wood, etc.)

Does this seem pretty reasonable? I’d like to get it started asap, as the rooms are currently empty and ready. But if it seems like a ripoff, I can get a couple more quotes.

I’m About to do Something Cruel

My ex bf won’t move out of my house and is draining me financially. He refuses to work and his kratom and weed habits are costing me over $800/month, plus all the bills and whatever he feels like buying on any random day. There’s no end in sight. Cops won’t help, eviction takes months.

He has a court date for tomorrow that’s 5 hours away in his hometown. Since he doesn’t drive, of course he expects me to take off work and drive him.

I agreed to do it. I called off work for tomorrow, I booked a hotel so we can leave tonight and make it to his morning court date.

I plan on going out to my car for my migraine meds while he’s in court-and driving away.

This weekend, I will pack his stuff up and drive it to his hometown. I will buy a storage unit for 3 months-and he’s gone. He won’t know about it until I’m done.

There is absolutely no way he has the resources to make it back to me. I’ll be free.

This is unbelievably cruel. But he has cost me $10,000 in the last 4 months and I cannot afford him. I’ve had to dig into my savings and now no longer have a decent down payment for a home. He is unsustainable. I have begged, pleaded, screamed at him to stop costing me so much money and to get a job, and he simply won’t. This is my shot. Here we go.

Finding home for young stray cat

A few weeks ago, I found a young pregnant stray cat (really, a kitten herself), and I brought her in. Unfortunately, she gave birth to stillborns. I’m getting her second set of vaccines next week, then am getting her spayed 3 weeks later (per vet rec).

She is a fun little stick of dynamite, but unfortunately, does not get along with my current cat crew, so I need to rehome her. Shes been tested and is FIV and feline leukemia negative, and is a healthy young girl. I’m willing to help pay for food for the first 6 months, I just really want her to go to a good, solid, happy home. Any ideas on how to find this little lady a safe place to thrive and be the bestest little lady to the bestest family?

Took 6 months off when mom died, can I still qualify for mortgage?

I’m desperate to buy a house, but I took 6 months off from July 2025-Jan 2026 when my mom passed away. I make $60,000 and have student loans and about $7,000 in cc debt. I do job hop as a nurse, but it’s for sign-on bonuses.

I was preapproved for a loan but am worried they’re going to ask for more than the 3 months of paystubs. I’m really nervous about getting really far into the buying process then being denied the mortgage at the last minute.

Should I just hold off another few months to start looking? I’m currently in a mobile home that’s going to cost about $5,000 to fix up, and would really rather that go to my purchased house.

Handyman or Floor Replacement Recommendations

Hi, we had a plumbing leak in our mobile home and need to replace the bathroom floor, as well as a corner in the living room where my idiot cat peed behind the litterbox instead of in it. Probably will need to replace the subfloor as well in these spots. Floor material is cheap vinyl/fake wood looking stuff.

Any reasonably priced recommendations for this work?
