Applying to an apartment - deposit
Hey there !
I am currently looking to rent my first apartment in NY as a Canadian.
I had a virtual tour with an agent today and after telling me I'd like to apply, i received a list or requirement including a $1000$ deposit just to apply.
Is that normal/customary?
"Here is also a list of items that would be required ASAP to begin:
*$1000 Deposit to secure the apt required ASAP (see options below on how to submit it)
*$20 Application fee per applicant
*$20 Guarantor fee per applicant (if applicable)
The $ 1,000 Deposit is refundable only in the event you are not approved. If you are approved - the deposit will go towards the 1st month’s rent upon approval.
Move in cost - 1st month rent + 1 month security
Move-in date: 08/01/2026
