Long story short, I work at my families business. My office is right next to my uncle (who is the president of the company). Naturally, I over hear things all the time but this time heard something very concerning. That our company is in the process of being acquired..

Panicking, that night I called my uncle to confirm and he was very upset and claimed I was eves dropping. Literally can’t NOT hear the man plus the walls are paper thin in this office. Anyways, the next day he pulls me in a meeting with HR and all the other high ups and has me sign an NDA and gave me explicit instructions to keep this confidential until they formally announce to the whole company.

When the news officially breaks to the rest of the employees and my best friend in the office finds out, she is going to ask me why I hid this info from her / why I couldn’t trust her and just tell her.

What can I do in this situation because she is going to be royally pissed off at me for keeping this from her and this is going to put a wedge in our friendship for sure. She’s not going to care about the whole NDA thing. She’s still going to feel like I don’t trust her and that’s going to really sting.

Which is better in this situation a.) claim I didn’t know anything ? B.) tell her I had to sign the NDA?
