Residency vs. Fellowship (Oncology)
I’m currently a fourth-year pharmacy student graduating in May 2027 and am very interested in oncology pharmacy. I also have experience working in oncology prior to pharmacy school, which is what initially sparked my interest in the field.
I’m starting to think seriously about what I want to do after graduation and am torn between pursuing a residency or going the industry fellowship route.
For those working in oncology, what are the biggest differences in career opportunities between an oncology-focused residency (PGY1/PGY2) and an industry fellowship? I’m interested in both clinical oncology and industry roles, so I’d love to hear from anyone who considered both paths.
If you chose one over the other, what ultimately helped you decide? Any advice or things you wish you knew when making this decision would be appreciated!
