Hurts to speak, getting worse rapidly

My doctor has prescribed me lansoprazole too see if it helps with suspected silent reflux. I have often had a tendency to need to clear my throat frequently, so thought for a while I may have this.

The most difficult symptom I’m dealing with though is my voice! It’s not hoarse, but I can’t speak without this feeling that my voice is fatigued and this horrible achey feeling in my throat.

It started off that I would struggle finishing reading a story to the kids, I stopped reading stories 6-8 weeks ago because of this, thinking it would improve. It’s got worse though!

This past week has been awful and it’s progressed from speaking normally day to day but having to limit phone calls and not talk continuously, like reading a book aloud… to 7 days later, I can say about 5 words in the morning pain free and that’s it for the rest of the day.

I’m having to use text to voice on my phone to talk to my kids. It’s so hard and I’m devastated.

- Has anyone else had voice changes similar?
- Did you manage to fix it and how?
- Or does this sound like something more sinister that I need to get checked?

TLDR

  • I’m off sick with work related stress and anxiety.
  • Line manager sent over her EOY review write up to my personal email
  • I replied formally via email stating very clearly that I didn’t agree with her review and would discuss when back at work
  • I also made it clear that I would prefer the ‘auto not met’ as this can be overturned later due to extenuating circumstances
  • After confirming she had seen the email she uploaded the unchanged document 2 hours later, signing the declaration stating I agreed to it and had had the chance to discuss it - both of which I didn’t

(There’s an ongoing issue with my manager and me at the moment where she is painting an unfair picture of me to senior managers to try and achieve her own agenda, however I have evidence that she isn’t being honest, but haven’t had the opportunity to present this yet. The review does the same thing in parts which is why it’s important to me to get this changed).

Is she even allowed to do this? How can I get this changed and how bad is this in terms of managerial failure on her part?

Long version: I’m off sick and my manager said two days ago “do you want to do a write up or just read over mine and if you agree I can bypass your write up. If you don’t upload anything you’ll get an auto ‘not met.’

As I had such short notice to do a write up, I just said to send hers over and I’ll have a read. Bearing in mind, this communication is through WhatsApp and my personal email, while I’m off sick with work related stress and anxiety, caused by her.

Yesterday she sent the file. I read it and today she pushed me again to agree to it, saying the deadline is now 2pm not 5pm because she’s signing off early, and if I haven’t replied she will just upload it.

I purposely logged onto my laptop and replied via email to create a paper trail. I stated very clearly that although the majority of points are positive, there are a number of points I don’t agree with or need further discussion. I said I am not in a position to agree to this statement right now. I also made it clear to her that an auto ‘not met’ can be overturned at a later date, and that I would rather this and get the review right.

I’m aware these reviews don’t mean that much, but as there is ongoing conflict that could escalate into a grievance/ tribunal, (failure to make reasonable adjustments, disability discrimination around a physical injury, and other examples of general failure as a manager). I believe with this is mind, it’s important for my EOY review to not be an unfair representation of me.

She confirmed she’d seen the email on WhatsApp.

A few hours later she uploaded the review anyway. ‘Signing’ the line manager declaration which states she gave the employee the opportunity to discuss the review and that I agree to it.

Is this ok? If not, how bad is this on her part, and what can I do about it?

TLDR - I’m off sick with a month sick note from GP. End of year review due tomorrow or get an automatic ‘goal not met’ on my HR. What happens in this case when someone is off sick and can’t complete their end of year review in time/ neither can their manager?

Long version: The end of year write up is due to be uploaded to my HR tomorrow April 30th. I am currently off sick since April 8th and will be until May 8th (signed off from doctor).

My manager has sent me over HER write up and said if I agree to it we can bypass MY write up because I’m off sick. She said if I don’t upload it tomorrow (or her upload it) I will get an automatic ‘Goal Not Met’

Firstly - Surely there can be an extension on this due to me being off sick? I can’t be expected to carry out work related tasks when off sick surely? Especially when the cause is work related stress and anxiety (caused by my manager but we won’t go into that).

Secondly - I don’t agree with her report. I think some things are unfair and I want to challenge them but it will take time to discuss it. Long story short, I believe she’s failed me as a manager over the past year since returning from maternity leave, and although I don’t want to escalate this, I also don’t want to take accountability for mistakes that have been caused by herself and twisted to be my fault.

She’s pressuring me into agreeing so I don’t get an auto ‘goal not met’ or whatever it says. I’m just wondering, what actually happens to employees who are off sick and get this auto ‘not met’ score
