Well, it's together and working. Modded N64

So after some hiccups on my build I ended up having to get another n64 as the 1st stopped booting and the CPU got VERY hot very quickly. So this is board no2.

Didn't manage to encase the cart on this one as I just wanted to get it working. But as the case is 3d printed when I get around to working out moving the cart slot I can just print a new lid.

It's an N64 with usbC hispedido hdmi.

Relocating the power and rest buttons.

Led lit controller ports.

And a small 3v fan I had lying around to keep it cool (not needed but wanted to add a fan for reasons)

The thing is so much smaller.

I don't get why the 64 is so bulky, so much wasted space in there.

What do you think?

Think I have a favourite card in my collection....

Been collecting a few weeks now.

Got 600+ cards.

From S&V, perfect order and chaos rising.

And I think even though I have more rare and more expensive cards in the collection I think I have a favourite......

GaradosEX from SVI has to be my favourite. It's just visually appealing to me.

I have managed to pull Ralts and Fidough illustration cards.... But this EX is visually has more of an impact.

Anyone else got a favourite that isn't worth anything to anyone else but them?

Opening the 2nd to last pack and this comes out 🫨

Only been collecting for a week or so.

Help with N64 modding

Well, now I need help.

Iv got an NUS-CPU(P)-01 mother board.

Im trying to relocate the cart port to make the unit an all in one with an Everdrive.

Iv connected the port up, everything has continuity.

But when I turn it on the cart gets power for a split second and almost crashes.

I had removed the power port, power switch, reset button, cart port.

The OEM power pack is wired in and OEM power switch is back on the board, the power rail pulls 3.39v when off. But when I power the system on it drops to 3.1v\3.25v.....

I'm currently questioning 1 of 2 things.

  1. Short somewhere on the board?

  2. Caps?

What do you think?

I'm a little reluctant to throw caps at it if it's more a short on the board.

Advice?

What should and where should I be checking?

Need to vent - custom N64

As I have posted in the past iv been on a mission to re shell an N64 into a custom shell.

I expected to have some issues but boy I didn't expect the ones i'v come across.

Moving the cart under I totally forgot the wires are mirrored , backwards, crossed, and all kinds of fun!key.

But that's why I took this on, as a good challenge and learning.

Iv experienced voltage drop due to the new switch I'm trying to use.... The cart was only getting 3.1v, it's an Everdrive so I know it really wants 3.3v. trying different tests to work out what the hell is going on I ended up putting the OEM switch back on the board.

Surprise suprise. I now get 3.3v at the cart.

Gotta go to work now so can't investigate the switch or if it's the fact I'm using spades to connect the switch..... 🤷 That's a tomorrow job.

Next after that is to work out a more durables way to move the cart port.... As the dupoint wires iv used don't seem very secure.

Well it's taken a lot of learning. Patience, time and effort but I'm almost done with my custom N64.

I have learnt a lot along the way.

Even things like, 3rd party expansion pack boards are very tall compared to official ones, they are 2 chips, the official one is only a single chip which saves height.

The bottom Ext socket (for the DD) is literally a pass through connection. The socket on the bottom is soldered to the board, then the cart socket literally passes through the board to pressure fit to the ext socket.

My goal was to make a smaller case for the 64 but with my low skill level I have basically ended up with a shell the same size as the original. The only difference is iv relocated the cart to under the board so it won't have anything protruding.

Not to trust all these acrylic cutting companies, the tolerance they have cut these are insane, some are almost 5mm out. Luckily this isn't a major issue as if when it's complete a loft the things that could move are easily moveable.

That cart port was the hardest.

Flux is key. Flux is the essential for all soldering jobs. The joints look terrible when you don't use enough.

I have power.

But can't test AV yet as I removed the OEM port early and still waiting to order the hdmi.

All that is left:

- hdmi

- controller port boards to wire them in

And I think it's done.

Wish me luck!

Note: might look into board cutting next to make it smaller 🤔
