Hi folks, I'm in the UK and currently on a kick of trying to get my retro setup as optimised as possible. I've found conflicting infomation on if the PAL N64 runs properly with imported NTSC games, can anyone confirm for me if I'll need to sell my PAL unit and import one from the US, or am I fine with the system I have and will just need to import games? Advice from the experts on the system would be a huge help : )
As you can see the colours are washed af. What I'm wondering in terms of next steps are: is it the n64-AV cable? (New)? Could it be the projector itself? Any advice whatsoever is welcomed I haven't owned an N64 in 20 years
Sorry for the reflection in the picture 😑
Any tips? I am trying to get a small TV to bring to an event. Also good way to transport an old N64? Also how good is Smash Remix?
I was just trying to boot up my old console after cleaning it, and I noticed that every time I would boot up banjo and Kazooie the game would flicker? Like it would get me into the point where your first talking to the mole for the first time and then BOOM! console restarted?!
what could cause this, i’ve cleaned the pack on the console and used alcohol on the pins very gently (Usually works) is this a sign that my consoles on its last life
I am trying to find the pieces I need to be able to hook my old N64 up to a tv or projector at an office. Today. Like I have about 7 hours if I want to make this work. Listed in the order I’d prefer to use them, we have access to a Smart Board, a basic projector, or a pretty new tv, all of which have HDMI, and the projector also has VGA and DVI. We could also use like a computer monitor if that’s the best option, though idk that it is.
I do not need it to be pretty or upscaled. I just need it to function and be available locally. I saw there’s a pinned post, but that seems to be a lot more complicated. I’m not looking to mod the thing, just get it to function well enough to play it for an hour or two.
Would this thing from GameStop do the job? https://www.gamestop.com/electronics/tvs-monitors/tv-accessories/products/gamestop-universal-rca-to-hdmi-converter/341544.html Or is there anything similar easily available at Walmart or BestBuy or something? I was gonna call GameStop, but they don’t open for another 2 hours apparently, so I was hoping it would be okay to ask here first. My other option is run to a thrift store and try to find a cheap older tv, which is feeling more and more viable…
Thank you!
(Yes, I should have looked into this sooner, but I didn’t really think about it bot being just plug-and-go until last night. I lead a Girl Scout troop and my middle schoolers are participating on a pilot program for a gaming badge that’s in development nationally. The conversations last week turned to vintage gaming and Legend of Zelda, and one of the requirements they’re trying involves playing a game you’ve never played before, so I told them we could bust out Ocarina of Time 😬 ).

recently got back into collecting… a little late I know…
Boss threw a few hours of OT at me this week though so decided to use some of that money splurge and pick up 3 games I’ve had my eyes on.
$400 CAD ($290 USD) for all 3.
Weather is nice so going to take the old 14” CRT out on the porch with the propane fire and relax.
In case anyone was wondering: yes, you can emulate Apollo 11 moon landing software on n64.
Donkey Kong 64 gets a lot of flack for being a huge collectothon, but I think everything people accuse that game of getting wrong, Banjo Tooie also commits, but far worse.
Backtracking: If you want to 100% each game (I've 100%ed DK64 but not Banjo Tooie) you need to backtrack through both games. In DK64, you do this three times. Once to Jungle Japes when you get all the monkeys, once to the desert level once you've freed Chunky Kong, and once to the mushroom level in order to beat the harder rabbit race. It's not the most convenient, but it's only three times, and it's very obvious that you need to backtrack in all three ocassions.
In Banjo Tooie, every level apart from the last one (I think, I never got further than world 4 in Tooie) has one jiggy in it that requires a powerup from the next level in order to get. It's very annoying, and it isn't always clear as to when you need to do so.
Needing to constantly retreat to change kongs: Yeah, this can be a pain in DK64, but I'd still argue that Tooie has a version of this that is even worse. DK barrels are usually placed close enough together that you don't have to backtrack to far in order to find one.
Banjo Tooie has multiple small items like jinjos and honeycombs that require you to transform in order to reach them. Only you can only transform in very specific huts, in which there is only one of per stage. That theme park level drove me nuts with how often I had to backtrack to the hut.
Donkey Kong 64 controls better: This bit may be me talking rubbish, but I always found DK64 to control more smoothly than Banjo. Even in the first game, I didn't find Banjo the most percise character to control.
DK64 has better level design: Say what you want about how big the levels are, I never got lost in any of them. Glitter Gulch Mine is a horrible level for getting lost in, and I've heard that Grunty Industries is even worse. I also feel like DK64 does a better job at hiding secrets than Tooie, but to be fair, I've only played four stages in Tooie, so I can't fairly judge it on that front.
DK64 runs better: DK64 isn't exactly smooth as butter (almost no 3D games from this era was) but Tooie runs at what feels like 10fps.
I am not a big fan of swapping shells, but I crossed paths with an American control deck with a badly damaged shell.
All it still needs are new feet. The shell is from Ali Express, and it's colour was marketed as "black". I thought it would be an OEM charcoal style colour, but no, the console still translucent, but close enough.
As others have mentioned with these after market shells, the screw mounts need to be worked a little by tightening and loosening a few times (a pain with these security bits).
The power button would not glide, so I sanded it. The jewel is OEM from the original shell. I buffed it with NOVUS 2, to amazing results, and it fits in the AE shell perfectly.
Dust door is OEM. If I can find a solid black cartridge mount with the region lock, I may install it. The OEM gray one showed through the plastic, so I used their region free translucent one. The again, if I lock it --- no more Famisuta!
I may open it again just to hopefully have the screws twisting correctly, and, I need to inspect the mainboard. I only dusted it, and I did not pullout and inspect the cartridge slot yet. In my experience, a lot of dust can get under there.
As mentioned, this shell is close enough to the OEM charcoal for me.
Finally pulled the trigger on a summercart and I’m glad I’ll be able to finally play a few of the more expensive games alluding me but it definitely didn’t curb my interest in buying physical carts like I thought it would.
I’ve been meaning to replace a few batteries in carts I’ve owned for many years like Mario Golf and leaning towards just unlocking the characters again on the original cart instead of the summercart as it just feels… different
My friend has posted a 01:03:36 in a Time Trial on Mountain Quarry with Bobby Malone (first lap). We cannot find any info online to determine if this is a good, great or historic achievement. Anyone got a comp?!
Know nothing about them. Do they include a battery? And is this the one I should be purchasing? How do they compare to an overdrive and why are they so much cheaper?
Hi everyone! This is a post following up on a previous post I made about u/realrandomcat 's search and posts regarding this secret codes book that can't be found online. I finally scanned and uploaded it! Below are the links to the posts that were made, including my original post with more information
Does anybody have any experience with the 8bitdo n64 2.4g controller and if it has noticable input lag? I was thinking about getting one to play with mario golf but I want to be sure it's not going to throw of my swing timing first.
