American Girl Katniss Everdeen Doll (RUMOR)

American Girl Katniss Everdeen Doll (RUMOR)

I haven't seen this posted here yet. Over on r/americangirl, there's a rumor that American Girl (the doll company) will be releasing a Katniss doll next spring.

The leaker has historically been 100% spot-on. It seems like a weird choice for a company that markets dolls to kids ages 4-10 but there's a pretty big collector market.

Spring 2027 seems like weird timing, too. Obviously SOTR is coming out this fall but that's not about Katniss. (I guess no one wants a Haymitch doll.)

Thoughts? Do you collect American Girl dolls? Would you buy this doll if the leaker is right?

Audiobooks are real reading

I'm a school librarian and I'm here to tell you that there's only one correct answer to this question: "Yes."

If you don't believe me, you can take it up with Harvard University: Audiobooks don’t really count as reading? Think again.

Sure, you might not choose to "count" them towards your yearly reading goals (I'm not your mom!) or you retain information better if you read it in print (same, tbh) but this isn't really up for debate and I'm annoyed that the Finch team brought this up.

New U.S. toy import regulations + bringing dolls back from Japan

If you live in the U.S., you've probably heard about the new toy import regulations. My question is, how do I bring dolls back from Japan that I already own?

If I bring them in my carry-on luggage, will that be OK? These aren't even new dolls; I've owned some of them for 10+ years and brought them with me to Japan when I moved here. I have proof of purchase for most but not all of them. (Some, I bought secondhand in person with cash. Others, the confirmation email would be 20+ years old and might've been lost to the depths of Gmail hell.)

I might be moving back to the U.S. soon and I'm really stressed out about this. I've heard that secondhand goods aren't supposed to be subject to this regulation but some people have had them seized anyway.

Will my dolls be safe if I bring them with me on the plane?

Laziness Does Not Exist

Just skimming some of the conversations going on after the Grit episode and I think some of you might appreciate this article.

Excerpt:

>So when I see a student failing to complete assignments, missing deadlines, or not delivering results in other aspects of their life, I’m moved to ask: what are the situational factors holding this student back? What needs are currently not being met? And, when it comes to behavioral “laziness,” I’m especially moved to ask: what are the barriers to action that I can’t see?

>There are always barriers. Recognizing those barriers— and viewing them as legitimate — is often the first step to breaking “lazy” behavior patterns.

(It's also been turned into a book but, having read both, I felt that it was a book that could've been a blog post, so might as well just read the blog post? You can always get the book from your library later if you want to read more about it.)

I'm genuinely curious: where does the interest go?

I don't even want to look at how much I've paid in interest over the life of my loans. The money isn't going to my college(s) so… where is it going?

Ultimately, who's profiting off of this?
