Goddard Seminary, 1870-1938. Barre, Vermont

Opened as a college for women, it was left empty after the school moved to a new campus (the college closed in 2024). The town of Barre bought the building and demolished it in 1938, using a PWA grant to build an auditorium on the site.

Ramsay-McCormack Building (1929-2021) Birmingham, Alabama.

The 10 story Art Deco tower was never fully occupied, and had been vacant since 1986. After coming into city ownership in 1983, it became a typical example of demolition by neglect. Numerous proposals to adaptively reuse the building fell through and it was declared structurally unsound in the final years of it's life. The 5 story building that was supposed to replace it is yet to materialize.
