Pizza Fly!

Last trout of the day caught on the Umpqua Grillo’s Pizza Fly. Not a trophy sized trout, but it wasn’t easy feeding a slice of pizza to a fish eating midges in extremely slow water. As a proud Italo-American, I give this fly pattern my full endorsement. Mangia! 🍕

Zygonisia Snow Bird

I bought this in late March of this year. It had two spikes with 8 buds. They opened in April and lasted until early June iirc. After flowering, it immediately pushed out a new growth, which grew at light speed. The new growth has three spikes, with a total of 10 buds this time. The first bud opened at the beginning of August. I think I’ve found the orchid best suited for my environment. I need to get more like this one.

Psychopsis Mendenhall Hildos

I first noticed the nub of a spike about 4.5 months ago. I posted about it here about 4 months ago. It finished opening completely overnight last night. I actually thought this would be a September or October thing, but I’m happy to see it happen a little quicker.

Question…if these keep flowering, when does new growth happen?

Local Estate Sale w/HOA options?

Hello...my father lived in PV and passed away in April. I live on the east coast and have been back and forth since then. I will be back next week. I anticipate getting out the last of the stuff I plan on keeping then. After that, I'd like to have a local estate sale company clean the house out, but the HOA won't allow an estate sale from what I've been told. Are there any good local options to handle remove the contents of the house without having an on-site estate sale? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Antelope Dendrobium (no ID?) Question

This no ID Dendrobium has been in bloom forever. I took these pics on February 19th. The first flower opened the beginning of February, I think. Since then, I’ve removed about a half dozen flowers. The rest look fine. They’re not even drying out. There’s a new cane starting to grow. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago. My question is, should I cut the spikes off? How long is too long when it comes to keeping (viable) flowers? Will cutting the spikes off encourage the new cane to grow faster? This is the longest I’ve ever had an orchid in bloom.

I’m in the northeast US. I moved this Den outside a couple weeks ago. I plan on keeping it outdoors until sometime in September, most likely. I’d like to get it to bloom again next winter.

Also, can anyone tell what type of Spatulata-type Den this is? Thanks

Inherited two cars, could use a little advice?

My father died a few weeks ago. I’m his only child (by birth) and have inherited his cars. One is a 2022 Kia Sorrento with 29K miles and an extended warranty. It’s whatever the highest trim package was at that time. This car is in very good condition. The other is a 2018 Mustang GT Convertible with just under 7K and is pretty much spotless. In typical old guy fashion, both cars were very well maintained. The main problem is that he lived in AZ while I live in the northeastern US.

I drive a 2015 Forester with 173K. It hasn’t had any major problems and it’s still running fine. For how much longer, I don’t know.

My initial thought is to sell both cars in AZ and, when it feels like the time is right, sell the Forester and buy something new. Maybe that’s soon, maybe not. It would be nice to sell the Forester before something major goes wrong with it. Honestly, I’d love to get some sort of hybrid as most of my driving has become fairly local. And I’d have enough money to not need a car payment, so I’m not worried about that. Thinking maybe a maverick, cx50, rav4 hybrid…not sure.

I am 95% sure I have a buyer for the Mustang. I might even have one for the Kia. I’ve done a little research and it looks like the Ford is sitting a little over $30K and the Kia a little under $30K. The Kia is pretty nice. I’m not sure I want to own it though. Plus, I’d have to drive it across the country. But maybe it makes sense to keep it?

I dunno. I’m hoping some of you chime in with some food for thought. I realize that, as far as the car thing goes, this is a “good problem” to have. Honestly, I just miss my dad a lot and I’m probably not thinking as clearly as I would normally. Thanks.

Little Maxillaria Tenuifolia Yamada with lots of flowers

I got this little guy at Logee’s last December. I was really happy when I saw its first bud. Last count, it had 21 buds/flowers. Curiously, I bought a Green Valley version of the same plant, gave it the same care, and it didn’t bloom at all. It’s ok though. I’m happy what I did worked for one of them. This one smells great!
