Why does YS 2012 "San He Zhai" raw puer taste smokey?

Can someone explain this for me? The cake sample I had was so smokey tasting like charcoal from the roasting, but it's a raw puer, so that means it's not roasted. Is that a naturally occurring flavor? Thanks.

What is going on with my plants please?

The Galangal has some leaves turning yellow brown on the top and underneath are these black dots that are a little bit raised. They're planted in potting soil.

Chaya also has something going on- the leaves grow in healthy but then they end up looking yellow. I planted them in a 50/50 mix of cinder and soil.
