Every once in awhile after a session I’ll realize something I should retcon for better cohesion or interest. It would never be more than 1 session back. And it wouldn’t ever be anything massive that would likely change the actions that the players already took.
We’ve got a lot on our plate and sometimes in the moment you don’t think to say the right thing…
What are you thoughts on the retcon?

So to kick off the real homebrew quest, my party needs to borrow a McGuffin (1 of 7) from the honorable mayor of a town. The mcguffin is a semi-powerful artifact (more powerful when combined with other 6) and it is “the symbol of stability for the town.”

The town’s trade routes have been disrupted badly, and the mayor says he’ll let them borrow it if they simply “help fix his trade problem.”

In my world there’s pirates disrupting trade but the primary reason for this particular issue is the owner of the major trading company on the other side of the sea is manipulating the market by imposing import taxes (he has a seat on the city council) and creating fake scarcity and whatnot to increase his profits.
- I have not worked out these things in super fine detail… I wasn’t anticipating it’d be necessary to advance the plot.

Anyway, when talking to the mayor, one player wanted to know the fine details of the parameters of their agreement: exactly how much do we have to improve your trade routes? Exactly how much to your inbound prices need to decrease on which products?
I responded in character as the mayor nervously laughing and saying “I suppose I could get my CFO to draw up some specific expectations…”
The player also pointed out that this was an unrealistic deal for the mayor to make… trusting strangers to borrow his valuable artifact for fixing his trade problem… another player said “well the artifact isn’t much good to anyone if their town falls into complete poverty”

Another party member seemed to understand that these details didn’t matter too much, that the mayor could be trusted to hold up their end as long as something was done to improve the situation at an undefined amount. They also had the good idea of getting letters to prove they were official emissaries for the mayor.

Idk man…

They eventually settled it with agreeing to the mayors vague terms. I think they understand the assignment, and are definitely going to take this plot hook as. Trust the mayor, but I am a little worried that emersion was broken and my world isn’t as detailed in this regard as it should be.

What should I focus on? Should I work on more details or what?
