Sources for the names of the named minor performers

About 10 Days Ago, Flame245 made a post about the more minor competitors in the Pokemon Showcases throughout XY and mentioned the names of those performers that were given names. They got the names from Bulbapedia which unfortunately doesn’t make it very clear when the names were revealed. Now that I’ve seen the Master Class episodes, I went back to double check all the showcase episodes and did some other digging, and now I can list the sources for these names.

Fair warning, claiming that this list is a 100% accurate source is questionable. I would say this list is at least 98% accurate, which is about as good as it can get if not 100%. I’ll explain what I mean by that as we go. Also, this list focuses on the names from the English Dub….with one exception.

I’ll mention which exception that is when we get to her but for now, let’s begin. Going in order from earliest debut on stage in an episode to latest debut.

-

1 - Kayleigh

Debuted in the episode “Dreaming a Performers Dream”. Her name was directly said by Pierre in the same episode.

-

2 - Alouette

First appeared in “A Showcase Debut”. Her name was directly said in the same episode.

-

3 - Elma

She also first appeared in “A Showcase Debut”, and this where we get to why it’s questionable that this source is 100% accurate. Nobody ever directly said her name in any episode. I was able to find out that the reason Bulbapedia says this is her name is because some official closed captions for the dub mentioned it during moments where she spoke.

I did my best to find where these captions came from but the only real answer I could find was that they came from old airings on Cartoon Network and other such places that are largely unarchived online.

The only thing that told me this was Google’s Ai Overview in the search results, so I won’t blame you if you’re skeptical of that due to the use of Ai. But it’s all I could find for where these captions were located.

At the very least, the claims that Elma’s name comes from CC’s is stated by real people on Bulbapedia.

-

4 - Blanche

Once again she first appeared in “A Showcase Debut”. Her name was also directly mentioned in the same episode.

-

5 - Clarice

This one’s a bit odd. Yet again her first appearance is “A Showcase Debut”, but both voice lines that say her name and the aforementioned CC’s (according to Bulbapedia) say her name is Clarissa in the same episode. As far as I can tell the reason Bulbapedia says her name is Clarice is because that’s what CC’s from later episodes said her name was. Though the name of Clarice is never directly said by anyone.

-

6 - Lily

We’ve got a different debut episode this time. Lily’s is “A Performance Pop Quiz” and her name is directly said in the episode.

-

7 - Queenko

This is the exception to sticking to English Dub names that I mentioned earlier. She’s the orange haired girl with a Nidoqueen in her corresponding image and she also debuted in “A Performance Pop Quiz”. However her name was never said by anyone and according to Bulbapedia even the CC’s referred to her as just “orange hair girl”.

The name Queenko apparently comes from captions in the Japanese version which I presume is why Bulbapedia only lists a Japanese name for her and not an English one.

Because in Japanese her name is Queenko, but in English she is unnamed.

-

8 - Sara Lee

She first appeared in “A Dancing Debut”, but she wasn’t mentioned by name until the episode “Master Class is in Session”.

-

9 - Amelia

The easiest one to remember the source on. She was given more than enough attention in “Master Class Choices” for people to remember that her name was directly said.

-

10 - Concetta

She debuted in “Master Class Choices” but ironically her name was announced as Kiri in that same episode. She was referred to as Concetta in “Master Class is in Session”.

-

11 - Kazalie

She also debuted in “Master Class Choices” where her name was directly said.

-

12 - Shulin

Her debut was in “Master Class is in Session” and she is in the same boat as Elma. She has an English Dub name, but it was only ever revealed in unarchived CC’s.

-

And that’s a wrap. The last two images attached to the post are screenshots of the info I found about those CC sources in case you were curious.

Which hat is better for this Serena outfit in terms of shape?

I whipped up this outfit using the appearance customization feature in the XY games. Was experimenting with ideas for a new main Serena outfit and this is what I landed on. Barring a few tweaks like the removal of that purple scarf and the addition of the blue ribbon Ash gave her.

But I’m curious as to which shaped hat out of the two different ones in the attached images people think is better. Color wise I think the 2nd one is better. So I feel like if I were ever to commission an artwork of Serena in this outfit or something, then I would keep the shape of the 1st hat, but give it the colors of the 2nd.

But what about you guys? Do you think that idea of Hat 1 shape but Hat 2 color works? Or do you think Hat 2 is better for both color and shape?

The ironic parts of the mindset that Serena’s Pancham shouldn’t evolve

It is not at all rare to find the opinion that Serena’s Pancham should not evolve into a Pangoro. I agree with that sentiment all in all. Pancham just fits the performance aesthetic better than Pangoro does.

However the most common reasoning why this evolution shouldn’t happen is because becoming all big and bulky like that would hinder Pancham’s ability to dance.

And well…..you can see the attached gif. Blastoise is also a big and bulky Pokemon yet Tierno’s Blastoise is still quite agile in its movements. No doubt due to all the dance training it did as a Squirtle and as a Wartortle.

Serena’s Pancham also has plenty of dancing practice under its belt. So the same thing could be the case here.

And to add on to that, in the episode where Darkrai brings Pikachu and Meowth into Squishy’s dream, the main groups Pokemon can evolve and unevolve at will. And lo and behold, Serena’s Pancham turns into a Pangoro in this dream. So the idea has at least been officially acknowledged in some way.

I’m still of the belief that it should stay a Pancham, but it looks like the idea of an evolution into Pangoro has just a tiny bit more going for it than I gave it credit for.

My 5 Favorite Moments from Snowbelle Heartstrings

Snowbelle Heartstrings is an Amourshipping Fanfic by PikaBlue182 that I must admit I feel conflicted about.

Part of the core concept is that the Master’s 8 is coming up and Ash is feeling a lot of nervousness and anxiety about the tournament. So much so to where he’s not himself. He’s down in the dumps in a way similar to how he was after he lost to Wulfric in XYZ. Which no doubt served as the inspiration for this story.

And therein lies my confliction. After Serena snapped Ash out of that funk in Snowbelle City, we could tell that the lesson he learned from it really stuck with him. As evidenced by how when he lost to Alain in the Kalos League, he didn’t let the loss get to him and was instead proud of what he accomplished. And as far as I’m aware, neither Sun & Moon nor Journeys had another moment where Ash felt defeated in the same way.

That’s why I feel weird about this aspect coming back for this fanfic. Combine the fact that Ash canonically got over it for good with the tension that can be caused (and was caused in the story) by Ash being in this state, and I can say that aspect just rubs me the wrong way.

Enough to where I have not read every chapter of Snowbelle Heartstrings. I made it through about Chapter 7 before deciding I didn’t want to keep going any further.

However, I can’t deny that the story itself is very well crafted. It’s got good length to its chapters, the grammar is mostly solid, and at the end of the day this gripe of mine is a me problem. The concept is a good way to expand upon one of the most pivotal Amourshipping moments with a new story. And I’m sure the fic will have a happy ending despite the rocky road to get there tension wise.

And most important of all for the good points of this fanfic, despite my desire to not go any further, out of what I did read, there are parts I like to go back and re-read. So I have made the decision to list 5 of my favorite moments, in no particular order, from what I have of Snowbelle Heartstrings. Bear in mind, not every moment I mention will have a big focus on Amourshipping. Most will, but there are a couple that are more “in general”.

For obvious reasons, spoilers are on the way. I’ve attached a link to the fic in this post, so there’s your opportunity to read some of it beforehand if you want to.

Let’s begin shall we?

-

1st - Ash wishing he could see Serena again, from Chapter 1

As you probably guessed, the main setting for this fanfic is Snowbelle City. Dawn and Chole decided to visit so they could see the very first Pokemon Showcase of said city and they tried to convince Ash to come along with them so they could have a guide and to hopefully ease his tension a bit.

Ash agreed, and as they are walking through the snow towards the city, the thought of showcases leads Ash to reminisce about when he saw Serena competing in them. That brings a smile to his face as he remembers how much fun she had performing and how much she dazzled him during those performances.

This causes him to wish he could see one of her performances again, and using the wording of the fanfic itself, heck, he was starting to wish he could see her again, period. He tries not to get carried away with those desires out of respect for how she’s pursuing her goals, but he himself admits that his heart was desperately holding onto those unlikely odds.

Or so he thinks they’re unlikely. Ash doesn’t know it yet, but Serena is competing in the Snowbelle Showcase. We’ll get to more of that later, but for now, it’s nice to see Ash remembering Serena so fondly. And in a way that I would describe it fueled by romantic feelings.

-

2nd - Dawn and Chloe find out Ariana’s true identity, from Chapter 4

In an earlier chapter, Dawn, Chloe, and Ash run into Aria while shopping around Snowbelle City. She’s in her disguise of Ariana so Ash is the only one who realizes it’s the Kalos Queen, but per Aria’s request he keeps quiet about it.

Aria is traveling with Serena and as Kalos Queen, she has a responsibility to review the new showcase theater in Snowbelle. But she has some time off to spend in the city and once she runs into Ash and Co. she spends the day shopping with them, forming a friendship with Dawn and Chloe.

When the showcase begins, Dawn and Chloe are excited to see the Kalos Queen giving her speech onstage, but they think there’s something familiar about her and try to piece it together while Ash and Pikachu just smirk and giggle since they already know.

Once Dawn and Chloe figure it out, in Ash’s own words, he wished his brain could have taken a picture of their faces. They are flabbergasted as they start shouting at Ash, saying things like “YOU KNEW THIS WHOLE TIME?!?!”

It was pretty darn funny 😂

-

3rd - Aria setting up the big surprise, from Multiple Chapters

Since this covers multiple chapters, it might feel a bit off to call it a “moment” but whatever, I’ll roll with it anyway.

As stated before, Ash does not know Serena is in Snowbelle City when he arrives there. Likewise, Serena doesn’t know that Ash is there either. So when Aria is hanging out with Ash and Co. and finds this out, she takes the opportunity to have a bit of fun. Keeping the fact that Serena is in Snowbelle a secret from Ash and that Ash is in Snowbelle a secret from Serena until just the right moment. While dropping a few subtle hints along the way. Like when she tells Serena “You and Ash will see each other again someday. I’m sure of it.” She adds an emphasis on the sure of it part that Serena finds odd. She also tells Ash more than once to make sure he pays really close attention to the Showcase.

Yeah, Aria delved into her mischievous side quite a bit here. Which definitely helped build anticipation in me. Just made me want to see Ash and Serena reunite all the more.

-

4th - Serena admiring the ribbon and her memories of Ash, from Chapter 3

Despite having a showcase to register for the following day, Serena is up late just staring at the blue ribbon Ash got her with a smile on her face. Reminiscing about her journey with him and the day they saw each other again in Lilycove City.

Aria calls her out for it too. Saying “You just can’t seem to let that thing out of your hands for longer than a day can you?” Which causes Serena to blush and nervously try to defend herself, but Aria cuts her off and says “Don’t worry, I get it. You really miss him don’t you?” which Serena cannot deny.

She even ties the ribbon around her wrist before she goes to bed. Causing Aria to give a nervous sweatdrop, but inside she’s super giddy about when Ash and Serena see each other again.

I sympathize with her. This was honestly a really cute moment of Serena indulging in her affection for Ash.

-

5th - Ash and Serena reunite, from Chapter 5

If this list was ordered in a ranking of what I thought was the best, this moment would be at the top spot.

After Ash sees during her performance that Serena is also in Snowbelle City, he rushes to see her after the showcase in a bit of desperation. To the point where it starts causing a scene in the lobby when he faces the challenge of how the receptionist isn’t letting him into the performer’s lounge. Luckily for Ash, Aria steps in saying he’s her guest, which causes the receptionist to relent.

On their way to see Serena, Ash asks Aria if she already knows he’s in town, but Aria chooses not to answer. Which annoys Ash, but he’s too focused on his need to see Serena again to care that much.

Aria is the first to arrive at the booth Serena is in and says that a fan was looking for her. Serena seems confused, but asks Aria who it is. Aria stays vague, but before Serena can voice her annoyance, she hears Ash’s voice and freezes.

Once our lovely couple is finally making eye contact, they stand there looking at each other wordlessly, their gazes locked as they can’t believe the other is before them.

Dawn and Chloe don’t say anything either. They’re too busy feeling like they just walked into something more profound than they can comprehend. Aria is also silent. Leaning on the doorway with a smile just taking in the moment.

Aria does eventually decide somebody should say something before things get awkward and attempts to do so, but she gets cut off before she gets the chance. Not by words, but by the best part of this entire moment.

Serena stepping out her chair so fast that it crashes to the ground as she throws herself into Ash’s arms.

-

These are just some vague descriptions as to these moments. It’s way better to experience them in the fanfic itself so if you haven’t done so yet, I encourage you to try. You might find yourself unwilling to read the whole thing like I did, but I do recommend trying to get through Chapter 5 at least. There’s some good stuff here.

How important do you think it is to "stay true to the timeline" in an Ash anime fanfic?

The title might seem a bit confusing here, so allow me to attempt a brief summary of the things I'm wondering about.

In a fanfic about a journey set at a certain point in the Pokemon Anime starring Ash, let's say between Sun & Moon and Journeys as an example, would it be ok for a writer to do things like evolve some of Ash's Pokemon who never evolved in canon, include Mega Evolutions that debuted in Legends ZA, and allow Pokemon to learn moves they couldn't learn until, say, Gen 9.

That's the brief summary version. Now for the more detailed part of the post.

In the modern day if someone were to try and write a fanfic about the anime starring Ash, or create some YouTube videos of a "what-if?" Pokemon series, basically the same thing as fanfiction, all the new updates to older Pokemon in the newer games exist. But how important is it for the writer to "stay true to the timeline" so to speak?

I already know that's not completely necessary. I brought up the what-if series videos on YouTube already, so let's use Zactoshi's Sword and Shield what-if series as an example. That's a Galar specific saga where the idea is to outright replace Journeys as Ash's next season after Alola. And as a result it hardly takes Journeys into consideration. Ash catches none of the Pokemon he did in Journeys and Goh and Chloe are given different, and significantly more minor, roles.

And that series turned out just fine. So I already know creative liberties that differ from canon can be taken. But at the same time, I do feel like that whole "differ from canon" aspect can go too far and be too nonsensical. And that's what I want to hear people's thoughts on here is if the ideas I'm suggesting fit within that balance or they're too much of a reach.

Speaking of those ideas, let's start with some of Ash's Pokemon evolving. To expand on the "between Sun & Moon and Journeys" timeframe I mentioned earlier, let's say that before becoming a research fellow, Ash takes a different journey. Maybe through the Orre Region from the Shadow Pokemon games? But this hypothetical fanfic would have at least an epilogue that mentions how some of the changes to the story this fanfic brings would lead into some changes in how Journeys played out. Like some of the new Pokemon Ash caught in the fanfic but not in canon would be there when Ash visits all his Pokemon at Oak's ranch, and how some of them would be evolved now. Like Ash's Scraggy could be a Scrafty now or his Gible could evolve all the way to Garchomp.

That's the first curiosity of mine here because in canon, those two stay as Scraggy and Gible the whole way through. So would it be too much of a stretch to evolve them in a fanfic or what-if video series like this? I feel like such a thing is fine, but again, I want to hear your opinions.

Second is the ZA debuted Megas. Now the scenario I'm using as an example here places the story in pre-Gen 8 territory. So I think it would be too much of a reach to include Megas like Mega Falinks or Mega Scovillain since those are Gens 8 and 9, but Mega Excadrill? Mega Malamar? Mega Golisopod? Those are all Pokemon from Gen 7 or earlier. It can't be that hard to just include a story element where those Mega Stones have been newly discovered right? Or is the fact that they debuted in a game that wasn't released until after the Gen 7 anime ended too much of a "messing with the timing" kind of thing?

And finally, the moveset updates. Using Pikachu as an example here, as I said before this hypothetical scenario would take place in a Pre-Gen 8 timeframe. So if Pikachu's Electroweb were to be replaced with a different Electric Type Move, I feel like it could not be replaced with Rising Voltage, but could be replaced with Eerie Impulse.

Eerie Impulse is a move that Pikachu could not learn until Generation 9, but the move itself debuted in Generation 6. That makes me feel like it's fair to have Pikachu learn it in a timeframe such as this. Rising Voltage on the other hand? The move itself did not debut until Generation 8. So I feel like including it would be an example of that "messing too much with the timeline" thing.

Those are my thoughts, but I want to hear yours. Are the examples I gave in the clear? Or are they stretching too much? For both traditional fanfics and the what-if series videos like what Zactoshi and Zanolith do. I want to hear what you think in regards to both.

How important do you think it is to "stay true to the timeline" in a fanfic?

First things first, I know this is an Amourshipping sub, and I don't think this post will mention Amourshipping a lot, but I want to hear the opinions on this matter from the community here. If the mods decide this is too off topic then they can send me a message letting me know that and I'll take this post down.

Now then. The title might seem a bit confusing here, so allow me to attempt a brief summary of the things I'm wondering about.

How do you feel about the idea of a fanfic where Serena continues traveling with Ash after XYZ?

Such an idea has been used before for fanfics and what-if videos on YouTube and such, but there's something about this I want to ask.

Serena's decision to travel to Hoenn after XYZ to continue pursuing her dreams of making people smile with her performances is often viewed as a great point of her character development. I even once saw a video by the Amourshipper known as Ayaanic Bond where they state one of their favorite parts about the kiss scene is how it shows that Ash and Serena's journey's were destined to take a different path seeing as how Serena is working to be a performer and Alola doesn't have performances. To be clear, they did not mean that Ash and Serena were destined to not be together. Just that their journeys had to separate for a little bit and that they could still totally reunite and become a couple later.

But what about a fanfic where, just to give an example, Palermo is making an effort to spread Showcases to more regions beyond Kalos and she thinks Serena performing in those showcases could be a great way to help drum up interest in them. Serena agrees, the first stop for this spreading of showcases is the Kanto region, so Serena and Grace fly with Ash back to Pallet Town after XYZ, where Serena and Grace get their own house in Pallet Town while they wait for showcases to be set up in Kanto.

So Ash and Serena stay in Pallet Town for, let's say, a month, showcases are ready to go in Kanto at that point, and Ash and Serena begin a Journey where Serena participates in showcases in the other regions while Ash finds a new battle related event to work towards along the way. As well as any goals from any additional traveling companions they would have.

I feel like a scenario like that is a good way to have Serena still pursuing her goals while continuing to travel with Ash after XYZ. It's definitely not the only scenario that would be good for that sort of thing, but it is an example of how I believe that if a writer plays their cards right, there are definitely ways to have Ash and Serena continue their journey together after Kalos without detracting from Serena's goals.

That's my opinion on the matter, but I want to know what you guys think about this as well.

My least favorite dub change in XY.

I don’t really have anything I dislike about the English Dub of the XY Saga, except for this one part.

In the Mega Evolution Specials, Alain, Lysandre, and Steven discover a giant rock that has something to do with the source of Mega Evolution. A rock that if I’m not mistaken also plays a role in XYZ (Haven’t started that season yet. Just finished Kalos Quest today).

And what is the name of this artifact of great importance in the English Dub?

………The Giant Rock. Sometimes called The Legendary Giant Rock.

I can’t deny, that just sounds too silly. If Bulbapedia is to be believed, then in the Japanese Version this rock is instead called The Megalith. That is a much better name. Perhaps a bit basic, but it’s still better than “The Giant Rock”.

What if Serena stayed with Ash during his Journey by ThePokeRaf

This is a video by ThePokeRaf that was just posted today. It’s a cute little video going over some ideas of what could have happened if Serena started traveling with Ash again after their reunion in JN105.

Yup. After JN105. When I saw the title I have to admit I thought they were going for an approach of Serena traveling with Ash from the beginning of Alola to the end of Journeys, so being set after JN105 caught me off guard.

I was also by surprised by how the video skipped straight to the final battle with Leon after the reunion and didn’t cover any of the journeys episodes in between.

A bit of an oddity, but either way this is still a pretty cute Amourshipping video. Some nice moments between Ash and Serena that I won’t go into the details of in this post. You’re gonna have to watch the video itself to learn that part.

Ash and Serena sitting next to each other while eating - Batch 2

The title of this post mentions it as Batch 2 for a reason. I have a post among the posts I’ve made for this subreddit of moments where Ash and Serena sit next to each other during meal times. That post covered all the moments of that from the beginning of the XY series up through episode 58. The episode where Ash had his gym battle against Ramos. And it also included the Diancie Movie.

With the point I’m currently at in the XY series, which includes the Hoopa Movie that I just watched for the first time today, I think I’ve got enough new material to make the 2nd of these posts. Beginning with the very next episode where they sit together while eating after the Coumarine Gym Battle.

-

1st - Episode 60 - A Showcase Debut!:

Ah yes. The tear jerker episode. After Serena’s loss in the Coumarine Showcase, the gang is having some dinner (or at the very least drinking some juice) at the Pokemon Center later that night. Serena brings up how Ash’s Gym Battle against Clemont is next in line on their journey and she sounds quite peppy about it despite having not yet had her moment where she lets it all out and cries at the port. Props to her for that. Being able to show excitement for something Ash and Clemont both have been looking forward to despite how she’s feeling? Again, props.

-

2nd - Episode 62 - The Future is Now, Thanks to Determination!:

Ok technically Ash and Serena are sitting straight across from each other in this one instead of side by side with each other, but I said that still counted in the last batch and I stand by that verdict for this one. After all it’s pretty common for two people on a dinner date to sit straight across from each other like that on said date. Though Ash and Serena are not on a date here. It’s lunch time for the entire group, and one of the less pleasant ones since Clemont got lost in thought and burned the food. Oops 😅

-

3rd - Episode 63 - A Fork in the Road! A Parting of the Ways!:

This is the first episode where Clemont is separated from the group to train in Lumiose City for his Gym Battle with Ash. So this time it’s Serena who has prepared the food. Meaning she isn’t actually sitting down to eat in the corresponding screenshot, but you can tell from where her chair is that she would be sitting right across from Ash.

-

4th - Episode 66 - Confronting the Darkness!:

The episode where the gang reunites in Lumiose City and Ash and Clemont have their battle! …..or at least they would if Clembot wasn’t framed for crimes that the gang has to clear its name on. But once that’s all taken care of the group enjoys dinner with Clemont and Bonnie’s dad. A meal that seems to have been prepared by Clembot itself if that Apron and Hairnet are any indication. Not gonna lie, those don’t look very good on Clembot.

-

5th - Episode 69 - Defending the Homeland!:

Short sweet and to the point on this one. The episode opens with the gang having lunch, so it gets to the focus of this post right away. Also, this is hands down the best screenshot out of what is attached to this post. No questions asked.

-

6th - Episode 72 - Scary Hospitality!:

We’ve got a bit of an odd curveball with this episode. The group is shown enjoying a dinner prepared by their host for the evening, but that dinner is not eligible for an entry in this post because Ash and Serena are not sitting side by side or across from each other. Yet shortly after the dinner the gang enjoys some tea, and Ash and Serena are sitting side by side on the same couch. What an odd coincidence.

7th - Episode 73 - A Fashionable Battle!:

One of my favorite meal time moments in relation to Amourshipping. Ash eats his food quickly because he’s too excited to get to training for his Gym Battle against Valerie. And what does Serena do when Clemonts points this out? She copies Ash’s fast eating habits and downs her food quickly too so she can go cheer him on. So precious. And while the screenshot attached to this post isn’t as good as the one for Defending the Homeland, it does take 2nd place in my opinion. The angle makes it look like Serena is gazing at Ash eating his food while she eats hers.

-

8th - Episode 75 - Rivals: Today and Tomorrow!:

I’ll be honest, it’s a bit debatable if this one should even be included. There are no chairs at the table this time, so everyone is standing up to enjoy the sweets that Serena made. But based on everyone’s positioning, Serena’s designated spot seems to be right across from Ash. So I’m gonna count it.

-

9th - Episode 81 - A Festival Trade! A Festival Farewell?:

After getting tricked by Team Rocket, the owner of the castle located in this town offers a special soup to the gang to try and make it up to them. Which is more than likely a Pumpkin Soup since the town is celebrating the Gourgeist Festival. Which is basically just another name for Halloween.

-

10th - Episode 83 - Adventures in Running Errands!:

Remember the episode where Serena dresses as Nurse Joy and blushes while asking Ash how she looks? That is this episode. Serena dressed like that in the first place to look the part as she helped tend to the Pokemon at a Pokemon Center that lost power. The entire group pitched in to help Nurse Joy until the power was back up and she was quite grateful. As she exclaimed during the dinner where Ash and Serena are once again side by side.

-

11th - Movie - Hoopa and the Clash of Ages:

Like I said earlier, I saw the Hoopa Movie for the first time today. So I’m making that the finale of this post. In the beginning of the movie as Ash and Bonnie are enjoying the pool installed at a Pokemon Center, they take a break to enjoy some donut shaped Pokepuffs that Serena made. Ash enjoys the treats, of course, but I like the way Serena clasped her hands together while asking Ash if he wanted to try some real donuts. That was pretty cute 😊

-

12th - Movie - Hoopa and the Clash of Ages……Again:

Yup. The Hoopa Movie had two moments of Ash and Serena sitting next to each other while eating. The 2nd of those moments, which is the final moment for this post, is Ash and Serena right next to each other as they eat at the Pokemon Center with their new friends Hoopa, Meray, and Baraz.

-

And that’s the end of this batch of moments where Ash and Serena sit next to each other while eating. But I still have a good crop of XY episodes left to go through (still haven’t even finished Kalos Quest) plus the Volcanion Movie. I’m quite confident there will be another batch of these moments in the future.

Your current thoughts on if the ZA special idea will happen?

You’ve likely heard of the idea I’m referring to before. A movie or batch of about 4 episodes or so that uses Legends ZA, a game that returns to Kalos, as inspiration for a return of the XY anime crew (likely about 4 years or so older) and part of that special involves making Ash and Serena 100% canon on screen.

It’s an idea that popped up last year, possibly earlier, which was not only the year Legends ZA came out, but also the year they put the XY anime on Netflix. The combination of those two factors certainly raised some more curiosity.

However, I recently discovered that one of the recent episodes of Pokemon Horizons takes place in Lumiose City and has the ZA characters of Emma and Ivor in it. That’s what the attached image for this post is. A cluster of screenshots from that episode. Some of which show the aforementioned characters.

Is that a strike against the chances of the idea for special I’m referring to becoming a reality? Honestly yes, but it doesn’t make it completely impossible.

It does show that they’re willing to use ZA content in the anime before the referred to special comes out (if it exists) but that doesn’t mean they can’t do the special. They’re still able to if they want to. Scarlet and Violet in of themselves have had anime specials separate from the Horizons anime before. Like Paldean Winds.

So in terms of my own thoughts on if this ZA special idea will happen. Right now I’m leaning towards probably not, mostly out of a gut feeling, but I’m not confident enough in that verdict to say it’s practically guaranteed to not happen. There is still a chance even if I’m feeling more like it won’t happen at the moment.

There has been speculation that if this special is happening, it will be announced in the Pokemon Presents for the 30th anniversary of the anime (the anime specifically, I already know the overall franchise has had its 30th anniversary) which is next year.

I agree that it’s most likely to be announced then, but I also think that’s its last hurrah. Horizons is already using ZA content and Gen 10 comes out next year as well. So if such a special is not announced in next year’s Pokemon Presents, I think at that point it will be time to call it a guarantee that it won’t be happening.

That having been said, even if such a special does not happen, we Amourshippers are still pretty well off.

Let’s not forget that the director of XY, Tetsuo Yajima, who is still involved in the Pokemon Anime, has already confirmed that the audience is meant to hope and assume that Ash and Serena become a couple at some point.

Sure they weren’t shown to do so on screen in the anime that starred Ash, but let me paint you a hypothetical picture.

Say there was an anime that had plenty of canon hints that two characters were going to end up in a romantic relationship. The anime ends and the two characters do not end up in a relationship from what’s shown in the anime, but the anime’s creator confirms in an interview after it ends that the two characters did indeed get together.

That is enough to make the ship canon even if it wasn’t shown to become so on-screen. And the statement Yajima made? It’s honestly the same thing. Even if he said “the audience is meant to hope and assume” instead of just saying straight up that they did get together, it’s still a direct statement of the creators intentions. Combine that with the fact that there are more members of the anime staff who support Amourshipping, it’s not just Yajima, and it becomes pretty clear that the intention of the series is that Ash’s canon relationship is with Serena. And there was literally nothing that happened after XYZ ended to change this.

So yeah, in terms of canon status, Amourshippers are still pretty well off even if this idea for a special isn’t happening. And that’s just for the status of the ship becoming canon. Let’s not forget that with any series, it’s still ok to ship what you like even if it’s not canon.

So all in all, my thoughts on the likelihood of this ZA Special idea is I feel like it won’t happen, but I acknowledge I could still be surprised, though we Amourshippers are still good to go even if it doesn’t happen.

What are your thoughts?

Zactoshi you Cheeky Devil

This is from an older one of Zactoshi’s videos where he reviews every Pokemon owned by a traveling companion of Ash in 10 words or less.

And because the name of the one and only Pokemon owned by Mallow, who is a Sun & Moon companion, happens to sound super similar to Serena’s name, he dropped the joke mentioned in the attached image. Referencing the old speculation/desire for Serena to make a return during Sun & Moon. Except it isn’t actually Serena, just the Pokemon Tsareena. Yeah you can see why I used the description of cheeky.

I’ll admit the joke did get a chuckle out of me. But that was mixed with the type of feeling where you just want to say “Ah come on man”. Aka one of those “too soon” type of feelings.

Your thoughts on the ending of the XY series?

To be clear, I'm not just referring to the single final episode of the series "Till We Compete Again". I'm referring to the string of episodes that make up the moments where the XY journey comes to an end. In other words, every episode of XYZ after the Team Flare Arc concludes.

The reason I ask this is because a Poketuber who I've enjoyed a number of videos from before named Zactoshi posted a video today about which Pokemon series ending he thinks is the best one, and in going from worst to best, he put the XY ending at the worst.

Don't worry, Zactoshi is not an XY hater. He deliberately opens his explanation by saying that XY is a solid series, and he does praise Till We Compete Again as a solid episode. He just felt that the other episodes that make up the series ending didn't really do the series justice.

His gripes include:

- Clembot being rebuilt after his sacrifice.

- Greninja's release feeling forced since Zygarde "already took care of all the vines".

- Serena going to Hoenn to participate in Contests. He felt that making her go do the same thing May and Dawn did when the series established a new kind of competition for her to take part in wasn't a good idea. And that it made showcases seem kind of pointless.

Now I will fully admit, I haven't finished the XY series yet. So my room to talk in terms of my own opinion on the ending is limited. That said, I will give my thoughts on each of those gripes.

First is Clembot being rebuilt. Honestly there is an argument for it making sense. He's a robot after all. But sometimes people feel that these sort of resurrections cheapen the impact of a character death. I have always had my issues with that sort of mindset, so Clembot being rebuilt isn't something I can say bothers me. But I can at least understand where Zac is coming from. It's not a mindset I typically agree with, but I can understand the reasoning in this case.

Second is Greninja's release. I put the part of Zygarde taking care of all the vines in quotes because as I said, I haven't finished XY. So I don't know whether or not that statement is accurate. Though I'm guessing it's probably not. Even so, there's no denying that a number of people were disappointed by Greninja's release. And I do understand why. I've learned to live with it, but I do know why people wish Greninja had not been released. So while I don't think it's enough of a reason by itself to say the XY ending was bad, I don't blame Zac for his views on the release.

And finally, Serena going to Hoenn to try contests. Now the part of it making showcases feel pointless is my biggest disagreement with what Zac said about XY's ending. Regardless of how you feel about Serena trying contests, the showcases still had a big impact on her and she had passion and dedication to them. Giving contests a try does not eliminate the fact that this happened.

But as for Serena trying contests, it's one of those things to where opinions on it can vary a fair bit depending on if you watch the Dub or the Sub. The English version does seem to hint a little more that Serena is moving her primary focus to contests, but the Japanese version, which is the true canon of the anime, from what I've heard it makes it more clear that she's just seeing what contests have to offer and exploring that side of performing, but she still fully intends to stay primarily dedicated to showcases and is still aiming to be Kalos Queen someday. If my information is correct, she kind of deliberately says that in the Japanese version of her return episode in Journeys.

So it's kind of a sub vs. dub issue, but I know from other videos of his that Zactoshi prefers watching the Japanese version. Now I don't want to dismiss that my information about Serena's goals in the Japanese version could be off the mark, but I don't think it is and if that's the case, then I can't help but feel he kind of dropped the ball on this reasoning. If Serena's just seeing what contests are like and is still dedicated to being Kalos Queen, I think that makes this gripe fall flat. For lack of a better term.

I haven't fully formed my own opinion of XY's ending yet, though I get the feeling I won't have a lot of negative things to say about it. And let's not forget, the writers were forced into rushing the ending given the deadline to move on to Sun & Moon. So even if there are sensible gripes, let's cut them some slack.

In any case, these are my thoughts on the points Zactoshi brought up. Mostly a case of disagreeing but understanding where he's coming from. Save for one or two bits where I feel he might have disregarded some key information.

What about you guys though? Got any thoughts to share on this matter?

Frame by Frame goodness.

I was scrolling through my saved posts here on Reddit and when I came across one that had a short video of the moment when Ash is sick and falls into Serena’s arms, it stopped loading at just the right spot to display a great frame.

Said frame being on display as the image attached to this post. Take a look at Ash’s lips. They are curled in just the right way to make it seem like Ash is stuttering in nervousness trying to voice a love confession to Serena.

Obviously that’s not actually what’s happening here, but this still makes for a fun screenshot to think of that sort of headcanon with.

Winter Climates, Warming Hearts

Is it possible to mine for gold in the snow? Well it is in one sense because the Kalos Quest episode “Over the Mountain of Snow” is another one of those goldmines for smaller bits of Amourshipping.

This is the episode where the gang has to rent some Mamoswine to cross over the snowy mountain to get to Anistar City. A maximum of two people can ride one Mamoswine and since Clemont offered for Bonnie to ride with him, that means Ash and Serena are riding together. Hence Serena’s blushing smile in the first image. Personally I was just a bit surprised that she didn’t go all “bashfully stuttering” mode in response, but it does make sense. She’s getting more confident so she’s not as much of a nervous mess around the boy she likes by this point.

So once the group has geared up and is ready to go, we get some moments of them starting the trek up the mountain and enjoying the scenery. The next two images are Ash and Serena doing just that.

It doesn’t take long into the episode for them to come across a steep slope however. Ash and Serena take their Mamoswine up first to test how safe the path is. Serena advises Ash to take it slow and easy. Ash agrees, and tells Serena to make sure she hangs on tight. To which she responds with a happy “mhm”. That’s where the 4th image comes from. The only downside? The whole “hang on tight” thing did not result in Serena wrapping her arms around Ash.

The slope ends up being too steep and Mamoswine slips and slides down it. Leading into the 5th image where Serena asks to take the reins. Intending to put the Rhyhorn Race training her mother gave her to use to try and make it up the mountain. And as you can tell from the 6th image, Ash thinks this is a good idea.

Their trials are not over though. In image 7 they have to cross a bridge that starts swaying in the wind once they get on it. Serena directly says “Ash, I’m scared.” and Ash is there to reassure her by saying that the bridge will quit swaying once the wind stops. He even has his hands on her shoulders! Suffice to say this succeeded in keeping Serena calm.

Which brings us to image 8 where Ash and Pikachu both praise Serena for keeping her cool after they finish crossing the bridge. Something she thanks them for. Oh, and remember when I said that it was a bummer that Serena didn’t wrap her arms around Ash when Ash told her to hang on tight in an earlier image? Turns out I spoke too soon because in image 9 when the Mamoswine are charging towards a boulder to shatter it, Serena is in fact holding on to Ash’s shoulders to help keep her balance.

For the final two images in this post, you may recognize them from a couple Amourshipping AMV’s and/or moment compilation videos. I know that’s where I first saw it. To help a sick Snover, Ash and Serena go looking for moss that grows around hot springs as an ingredient for a medicine that Clemont can make. The last two images are their reactions upon finding it.

Ever since I first saw that moment in those aforementioned kinds of Youtube videos, I’ve been looking forward to seeing this episode. And now that I have seen it, I am very pleasantly surprised by the amount of Amourshipping present in it. Definitely a solid Ash and Serena episode for sure.

A Showcase of Amour

The episode featured in this post is “Performing with Fiery Charm”. A rather notable Amourshipping episode as it features some of the most iconic Amourshipping moments. Those being Miette’s typical teasing towards Serena of “Make a move on Ash or I will”, as well as questioning Serena on her haircut. Which is a better Amourshipping moment in the Japanese version because unlike in the dub where Miette just asks Serena if something big happened in her life, in the Japanese version she asks if Serena cut her hair because Ash rejected her.

Obviously he didn’t, Serena hasn’t even confessed by this point, but Miette bringing up the idea that Serena was trying to change her appearance to get Ash to consider her is quite the method to try and get Serena flustered over her feelings for Ash. And as we saw, it worked.

This is also the episode that confirms that Bonnie knows about Serena’s feelings for Ash. Remember her famous line of “Ash can be so dense”? This is the episode that line is from.

But all of those are relatively well known Amourshipping moments. Hence why the only two images I’ve attached to this post are of a moment that’s not as commonly mentioned. The theme performance for this showcase is baking Pokepuffs. Serena is still nervous, but she’s able to push through and stay confident and one of the things that helps her do so is a flashback to where she made a bunch of Pokepuffs for her friends.

The Pokemon all liked them enough to get bulging stomachs from eating them, but Ash’s enjoyment of the treats in the flashback is featured quite prominently as well. In the first image you can see Serena blushing with a smile as Ash likes them, and the second image that focuses on Ash himself? That’s the last part of a display that cuts from reactions of different people to others. First is Serena, then Clemont and Bonnie, and finally Ash. And this is displayed in a way to where it feels like it highlights how important Ash’s praise is to Serena.

After all there’s a reason why after her skirt rips right before her Freestyle Performance, she points out how Ash never gives up to assure Braixen and Pancham as she figures out a solution. Showing once again how much of an inspiration Ash is to Serena.

Your thoughts on Showcases?

I feel like this question has been asked in this subreddit before, but a long time ago and we’ve gotten some new members since then.

Being an Amourshipping sub where we all obviously love Serena, I find myself curious as to what the people here think of Showcases given how they are Serena’s main goal and a big part of her development.

My own thoughts? Well I haven’t finished the XY saga yet, so the only two showcases I’ve seen are the Coumarine and Dendemille Showcases. But I thought they were pretty solid.

I like how the lack of battles allow the bond between Trainer and Pokemon to be displayed in a more unique way. And speaking of unique, the Theme Performances are exactly that. It’s a different kind of competition each time. The ones we saw being, funnily enough, things Serena already had an interest in before realizing her dream. Like baking and fashion. I can’t help but find myself wondering what other sorts of competitions the theme performances could have that weren’t featured in the show. That gives some room for fans to think of creative ideas for that sort of thing which is always fun.

And of course, the Freestyle Performances are pretty great too. The animation is most certainly a huge plus for them, but they are also another great way to show the bond between the performer and their Pokemon. Sometimes people say these are just watered down appeal rounds from Contests, but I disagree. With contests, it’s just the Pokemon on stage. Showing off some neat combinations of moves. In Showcases, the trainer is on stage with their Pokemon and has to be just as much a part of the dance routine as their partners. It’s a display of choreography and teamwork that you just don’t get from the appeal rounds of contests. Which of the two you like better is a matter of opinion, but both have their own unique charm. One is not a note for note rehash of the other.

The one thing I will say I found a bit odd about the freestyle performances in the Dendemille showcase is that they seemed a bit short. I don’t want to say that’s a flaw with them or anything. I get the feeling it was intentional, there are probably points in favor of it being better that they weren’t longer that I’m not aware of yet, and while I would have to double check this, I do remember the appeals rounds of contests being at about the same length.

Not to mention that showcases have more going on than just the freestyles. Beyond the theme performances, there’s also backstage stuff the performers have to go through. So the shorter length could just be a result of how much is going on in a showcase episode. And it’s always possible that the freestyles I haven’t seen yet could be longer.

And since I addressed the whole “watered down appeal rounds” claim, I might as well address other criticisms showcases receive that I don’t agree with.

First is the statement that it’s a problem that showcases are girls only. I don’t agree with that. Japanese Idol Culture, which is what showcases are inspired by, has separate divisions for boys and girls. Just like how sports such as Tennis have differing boy and girl divisions, or how Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are two different things. Showcases being girls only is just reflective of how its inspiration works in real life.

I also want to address the claim that showcases are just popularity contests because fans vote for the winners. Certain theme performances are in fact decided by judges and a big part of being a successful performer is being able to reach the hearts of the audience. I’ve heard that this was the main reason Serena lost to Aria in the Master Class is because she had yet to truly get a grasp on realizing that. Something directly pointed out to her by Palermo if I’m not mistaken. In fact, I hear there’s a showcase later on in XY where a performer with a Shiny Dragonair is a fan favorite among the town the showcase takes place in, but Serena still wins because she did better at reaching the hearts of the audience.

So it’s not really a case of fans just being biased for their favorite performers. Even with examples like Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie always voting for Serena, she’s their friend and her passion for her dream reached their hearts.

I think that’s about everything I can mention right now for my own thoughts on showcases. What about the rest of you? What are your opinions on them?

Moments with Noibat

I’ve gotten my first watch of a lot of XY: Kalos Quest episodes done recently. One of which was the episode where Ash catches Noibat, and another being the immediately following episode with the Pokemon Sky Relay.

The latter of those two are where the images in this post come from. During the relay Ash guides his Flying Type Pokemon from a hot air balloon, and while Noibat is waiting at the final leg of the race, Serena is right there with it.

That’s why Serena is in the balloon with Ash. Oddly enough Clemont and Bonnie aren’t there despite waiting with Hawlucha at the 2nd leg. Weird coincidence, but I find it cute how Ash and Serena are the ones in that balloon supporting Noibat, who is very much a baby at this point.

That gives a subtle, but nice Amourshipping spark. Makes it feel like Ash and Serena are the Mom and Dad. A vibe that the 2nd image captures very well too.

All of the Pokemon seasons are coming to Disney Plus this August

Well this is a pleasant surprise. I was quite happy when XY made it to Netflix last year and this announcement rekindles that same feeling. Only this time it’s all the seasons of Ash’s anime instead of just XY. I wonder if the movies and Horizons will be included in this?

*EDIT* Apparently this is only the case in the USA. I didn't realize that when I wrote the title. My bad.
