Ash’s Serena

A YouTube user named Gooey448 has a video on their channel where the idea is to give overpowered, but still sensible, teams to all of Ash’s traveling companions.

That’s the kind of video that you don’t really expect to have anything shipping related, but Gooey managed to sneak in a quick but cute nod to Amourshipping.

When it’s time to talk about Mallow’s team he mentions Mallows only canonical Pokémon of Tsareena (spelled as Zarina in the image due to errors with YouTube’s closed captions) and due to how similar that Pokémon’s name sounds to Serena’s name, he adds a quick joke of “No, not Ash’s Serena.”

Something which I appreciated as that’s a way of referring to Serena as being Ash’s girlfriend. That bit was unexpected, but it certainly put a smile on my face 😊

Trevor and Nini kind of get a bad rep I feel.

I forget which member it was, I think it might have been mr_mad, but I know that there was a member here encouraging the idea of talking about more XY in general content in this sub, so consider this an attempt of mine to add to that approach.

Full disclosure, there are still a number of episodes of the XY anime I haven't seen yet, my most recently finished episode is the one where Ash releases Goodra at the end, so my takes here may not be the most educated. Just getting that forewarning out of the way.

Onto the main point here, I'll be honest, I like Trevor and Nini. Both have had their fair share of gripes people have had about them, and to be honest, some of those gripes do make sense. In Trevor's case, he's often called the worst of the anime versions of the XY game rivals. And yeah, compared to Tierno, who incorporated the dancing theme into his battle style in the anime really well and actually had at least somewhat of an impact on Ash's battling for a time, and Shauna who helped Serena get into showcases and was legitimately a challenging rival for her in that goal, you can tell that Trevor wasn't quite as effective a rival by comparison.

And rivalry seems to be the main source of the gripes both he and Nini receive. For Nini in particular the claims seem to be that she was a rival who wasn't really a huge obstacle and didn't get as much time to shine as a character. Those are both points in a video Zactoshi made ranking all the rivals from the anime, which I just now saw for the first time and is kind of the inspiration behind this post, and while it's possible that I might end up disagreeing with his points as I get further into the XY anime, I do kind of see where he's coming from and I usually trust that he knows what he's talking about.

But despite these sort of flaws with both characters, I won't deny that it can still kind of hurt seeing things like when Zactoshi put both of them in the trash tier in the aforementioned video. Trevor's a legit friend of the group and contributes to the moments they share together. A summer camp arc without him would be worse for example. Nini too, limited time to shine or not, she's still clearly a member of Serena's group of showcase friends alongside Shauna and Miette.

I guess the main point I'm trying to make here is even though they may not have been the most effective rivals, they're still characters I enjoy seeing in the show and sometimes I feel like they don't get appreciated for just being among the friend groups as much as they deserve. I know that's kind of a bog standard aspect in the grand scheme of things but hey, it's effective.

With You - An Amourshipping AMV by amourology

Not gonna lie, watching AMV’s for my favorite ships is something I fell off of doing roughly 2 decades ago. I never expected to get back into it, but I’ve been finding some Amourshipping AMV’s lately that have gotten me back into that swing. At least for Ash and Serena.

And a YouTube channel that has uploaded quite a few Amourshipping AMV’s the past few months is amourology (that’s the username they prefer to go by these days).

So I decided to make a post highlighting one of those AMV’s. Set to the full version of the song “With You” which is one of the English theme songs to Pokemon Journeys. Despite that, the lyrics to the song could be interpreted as a shipping song pretty darn easily.

Not the 1st Journeys theme song to do that, it’s the 2nd, and the other one is better (I mean it’s sung by Serena’s English VA for crying out loud), but Take Me on a Journey never got a version longer than about 30 seconds. So With You is the better song to make an AMV out of.

Which is why I myself actually made one of those about a year ago. Why am I sharing amourology’s then? Because I already shared the one I made here once, and this sub has been lamenting about reposts lately, and because amourology’s is better. Mine had a couple frame glitches as a result of a faulty editing software and I made the audio too quiet.

amourology’s AMV got the audio levels correct. Plus they were able to utilize their skill in editing in ways I don’t have the knowledge to do. That kind of thing can help give the visuals some extra flair that you can’t get from just watching the clips as they were in the show.

And at the core of it all, it’s well put together from what you’d expect from a shipping AMV. It uses a fitting song for the ship and has clips playing alongside it that fit well in time with the lyrics. I think the clips chosen for when the lyrics of “The Journey’s the best part” in particular really complement those bits of the song, and they spark those giddy Amourshipping feelings that we all love. Not to mention how amourology included the audio of Ash saying to Serena “I’ll always be cheering you on and on” towards the end. That’s a nice touch.

Of course, this is just one AMV that amourology has made for our favorite ship. I definitely recommend you check out the other AMV’s they’ve made as well.
