Can you be an artist in New York without an MFA?

I was in fashion for most of my career and in the last few years have tried to transition to art. It's a tough industry for sure, but I'm not afraid of hard work. I did a bachelor in fashion (a long time ago!) but don't have an MFA. I feel like even tho I have great response to my work (on instagram etc), I can't seem to get far in the physical art world. Like, I apply for things and don't get them, I wonder if I will ever break through. I see so many artists who have networks from their schooling and seem to have a big leg-up because of it. I just turned 40 -do I have to go back to expensive schooling to be taken seriously?

Oh and my work is mostly ceramic! If that helps.

[Resources] I built a website that helps break creative block! Artistblock.art

Im not sure if Im posting in the right place but I made this website for when I feel stuck in my art practice- Ive used it for small exercises but also for like larger bodies of work. Idk if anyone else gets too in their head and cant get outta that space like me, but its teaching me stuff too! Lots of film and book recs etc. Thanks y'all

Trying to get inspired

Hi artists! I wanted to share something I just built! (yes I am a real artist, not a robot lol)

Basically last year was a terrible year (maybe 2025 was for a lot of people?)

Suffice to say - my art suffered! I had really bad creative block and couldn't get out of my own head. I wanted a tool that could generate initial ideas for me, even just to open my day with - to loosen up etc. So I figured why not create one? At least I'd be productive doing that instead of staring at a blank sheet lol

So, if you ever have that torturous feeling of absolutely nothing coming to you - try it out I made it cheap and you can use it forever - so literally just $15 and then you can use it for the rest of your life. I think its genuinely good and my art friends think so too!

Would love to hear what anyone thinks if they use it!

try it here > artistblock.art Example above (works for all mediums!)
