Artist pushed child in Prospect Park

Posting this on a throwaway account but people need to know about this asshole. This kid was getting picked up from camp drop off by the bartel-Pritchard square and when he stood up his backpack bumped into some paintings. Instead of using his words this grown man shoved the kid fully with both hands. His Instagram is paintingbrooklyn. His name is David Nakabayashi. I fully hope he never sells another artwork again. I’d think twice about supporting him. He has no regrets and says he would do it again. Screenshots from his Instagram comments posted below. If I were that kids parents I’d press charges.

Where’s the market for artist

I’m actually so perplexed on how to sell my art. I haven’t sold any art ever everyone just looks and scrolls. And the algorithm doesn’t help me at all. I see everyone else’s art get attention and mine isn’t getting much of any attention. I apply to artist calls and magazines but they always require you to pay an absurd amount for a chance that someone will read the magazine or buy your art when they display it. More than likely someone won’t buy it and I’ll have wasted my money. I just want to know where I can post my art and someone will buy it. It’s mostly surrealist art.

I'll go first - Hi, my name is Hillary. I am fashion designer, and Sewing teacher out of my studio Home Ec NYC that's near by in LIC. I made this "float on top" from House of Izzie Pattern Co as a sample for a sewing workshop I hosted in the studio this month! I've been wanting to use the cotton/linen fabric forever and love how it turned out!

All of these charcoals are 9x12 on wood panels, and they were/are(?) being used to help walkers on the path of The Lady in Greenpoint, a 3-mile walking audio ghost story starting at the Pulaski Bridge.

The pieces are currently on display at Oak & Iron (147 Franklin St., and also a stop on the walking ghost story) and if they don’t have a green sticker they’re available for purchase. Come check em out and/or ping me here or at rickpaulas@gmail.com. Thank you for your time!

Isaac W. Berends

Isaac Berends grew up wandering the forests, lakes, and streams of Wisconsin,
where a deep fascination with the natural world first took root. As a child, he spent
countless hours exploring the outdoors and diving into books on animals and the
cosmos, captivated by the wonders of life and the universe. That lifelong curiosity
nurtured by the voices of David Attenborough and Carl Sagan continues to shape his artistic vision today.
Having explored natural wonders from

Yellowstone and Yosemite to the fjords of
Norway, Isaac’s passion for discovery is matched by a drive to create. Influenced by
a love for engineering and architecture, his intricate linework reads like a blueprint
of the natural world a visual language that reveals how deeply life is connected,
both structurally and spiritually. Through his art, Isaac offers a meditation on the
beauty, resilience, and unity of life on Earth.
Unicellular Circumfluent
Half a double helix in composition, this work reflects the simplest of life forms,
constructed of virues, spores, and single cellular entities found in humans.
Representing the beginning of life as we know it, but also the very structures that
create modern day forms. The illustration visualizes this with an organic, flowing
design. Once primordial oceans swirled with microscopic single celled organisms,
these simple forms gradually evolve, branching into more complex structures and
early multicellular life represented as interconnected patterns that merge
seamlessly into the twisting helix.

Fungi Cardiovascular
The work depicts fungi and mushrooms growing from a twisted branch, their
mycelial networks weaving like veins and arteries, mimicking the cardiovascular
system. The mushrooms emerge like vital organs, emphasizing their deep
connection to life itself. As some of the oldest life forms, fungi were among the first
to colonize land, breaking down rock into soil and shaping Earth’s earliest
ecosystems. They sustain life through decomposition and symbiosis, essential in the role of life. This piece highlights fungi’s profound influence on the evolution of all
living things.

Flora Engender
This illustration captures the evolution and rise of flora, celebrating the quiet
resilience and beauty of plant life. From the earliest mosses and ferns to the rich
diversity of flowering plants, flora has shaped Earth’s landscapes and ecosystems.
Each spring, plants rise again, pushing through soil, overcoming nature’s challenges
with quiet persistence. Their growth is depicted like a flame moving upward, reaching for light with vibrant energy. At the heart of this rise are flowering plants,
essential to life on Earth, supporting pollinators, sustaining food chains, and bringing color and renewal to the
world.

Nord Fauna
This illustration honors the rise of fauna, with a focus on the diverse wildlife of the
Northwoods of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Resting within the oak branches contain a
whitetail deer skull, echoing the presence and passage of one of the region’s most
iconic mammals; a tree frog, toad, and salamander, creatures of moisture and
shadow, whose ancient lineages speak to the resilience of amphibians; and
numerous butterflies, delicate yet vital, fluttering through the composition as
pollinators and symbols of transformation. Together, these forms reflect the enduring connection between animal life and the land.

Elemental Genesis
This illustration reflects the elemental origins of life, composed as the mirrored side
of a double helix. This represents the cosmic ingredients that make life on Earth
possible. Hydrogen, forged in the birth of the universe; carbon, oxygen, nitrogen,
and other life essential elements born in the hearts of stars and scattered across
galaxies through supernovae. These elements, carried across space and time,
eventually coalesced on Earth to form the building blocks of DNA, cells, and all
living things. The composition bridges the micro and the cosmic.

Can you be an artist in New York without an MFA?

I was in fashion for most of my career and in the last few years have tried to transition to art. It's a tough industry for sure, but I'm not afraid of hard work. I did a bachelor in fashion (a long time ago!) but don't have an MFA. I feel like even tho I have great response to my work (on instagram etc), I can't seem to get far in the physical art world. Like, I apply for things and don't get them, I wonder if I will ever break through. I see so many artists who have networks from their schooling and seem to have a big leg-up because of it. I just turned 40 -do I have to go back to expensive schooling to be taken seriously?

Oh and my work is mostly ceramic! If that helps.

Looking for local artists (of all mediums) for NYC-based zine!

Hi everyone! I run a zine called Finger Food with some friends and for our second issue we're looking to expand outside of our small group. We are taking submissions and ideas of all kinds until August 1st, and if you have any ideas/ways to help or want to be involved please reach out via email at fingerfoodzine@gmail.com, and check out our Substack @ fingerfoodzine (same username for TikTok and Instagram) -- it's been so much fun to put together and we'd love to collaborate with more people, so please reach out!

We especially need help with social media/graphic design and submissions, of course. But despite our lack there, our first issue came out great and we're hoping to get the next one out around September 21st.

ART Documentary about the East Village in the 1980s plays this weekend at the Museum of Arts and Design

Make Me Famous is the Ultimate Love Letter to NYC when Creativity was the ultimate goal. Set in the East Village in the 1980s...Celebrate the 3 year anniversary of underground hit art documentary, Make Me Famous, at the beautiful Museum of Arts and Design in Columbus Circle.

Event Type: Film Screening-Make Me Famous

When: Saturday, 6/27 at  1:45pm

Place: Museum of Arts and Design, 2 Columbus Circle

Tickets: $14 Seniors, Students, Disabled, $16 General Admission Tickets must be purchased in advance.

***There will be a post-screening discussion with the Filmmakers (Director and Producer) and East Village artists Marguerite Van Cook, James Romberger, and Jim C.

Synopsis:

Make Me Famous is a vibrant, fast-paced portrait of New York City’s explosive 1980s Downtown art scene—where punk met paint, and the lines between art, music, and nightlife blurred. This was the world that launched Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Madonna, and Blondie—a cultural moment defined by its grit, glamour, and DIY ethos.

Amid the chaos was painter Edward Brezinski, a figure both present and peripheral, whose story offers a unique window into the era’s creative frenzy. More than a portrait of an artist, Make Me Famous captures a time and place where the dream of making it felt just within reach—and heartbreakingly out of grasp.
