Just made my first crutch-free dinner in almost 5 weeks
The past two days I’ve seen a MAJOR jump in progress with weight bearing, and tonight I managed to go crutch free (albeit very very slow and slightly limping) for 45 minutes straight. Feels like a goddamn Christmas miracle. That said I did start to get dizzy and short of breath and had to house a soda to come back to baseline, and yes I’m back on the crutches and resting now, but compared to where I was even a week ago??? This is improvement I can really set my hopes on.
Tomorrow marks 5 weeks since the initial injury, and I very much intend to flip that “anniversary” the bird with both crutch-free hands lol.
Broken leg return to skating recovery timeline?
So I’ve thrown myself at the pavement going high speeds more times than I can count with minimal damage. You know what does me in? Tripping backwards at 2mph in an unwieldy outfit that just so happens to snag my leg parallel to the ground on impact. Snapped the fucker (tibia and fibula) clean in half, joy of joys!
I’m 1 month post ORIF (nail down my tibia and an unsecured fibula) surgery, and while I try to not let things get to me vis a vis when I can return to the sport, it’s impossible to stay positive some days. Skating became my life this past year, I moved to a whole new city because of it, started my life over entirely, met so many amazing people. And now I’m completely without and feel so hopeless.
To get to the point though, has anyone else dealt with this kind of injury? And if so, what was your recovery timeline? When did you put the skates back on?
I feel like I’m at least on a fast track because as soon as I got my staples out, my surgeon instructed me to start weight bearing and I’ve not been put in a cast or a boot.
My man focus is urban skating, the highest impact skills being curb/crack/manhole/etc jumping, but I can forgo that even just for trail skating, anything to get back out and on wheels.
No I don’t expect to be out and about even by the end of next month, but these 6-12 month recovery timelines are beyond depressing me. Would really appreciate any insight if you have it to share.
Horrendous beast won’t let me have a moment’s peace with my work
She also enjoys to hide behind the draping bit, I call it her dragon cave
Quick edit: for everyone curious what the project is, it’s a dress! I have a bunch more WIP pics on my profile if u want to see more lol
Tib+fib fracture (no injuries to ankle)—foot misalignment and crookedness?
So… I am extremely freaked out by this.
I’m almost 3 weeks postop, I only had a nail down my tibia and four screws. I haven’t been in a cast or a boot, once I had my staples out my surgeon directed me to start FWB on crutches and basic at home PT.
I had my first actual PT session yesterday, and as I was laying on the table the PT goes OK let’s straighten your leg, and I watch in horror as she rotates my leg to the right and I see my foot start sitting at this unbelievably exaggerated angle… I have always been extremely mindful of my gait before injury, I never want to have that duck foot walk, and especially because that fucks up skating form which is the activity I am most insistent on getting back to.
Even when I walk now, my leg insists on rotating inward to compensate so my foot lands straight, because letting my leg go straight and having my foot land at that angle hurts like hell.
I am beyond terrified that the surgeon misaligned my entire damn leg, but then I tell myself how could that even be possible if the fracture site is all lined up in the x rays??? (See pic 2)
The PT couldn’t give me a straight answer when I asked about this, and my surgeon is very brisk about any inquiries, though I see him again in about 3 weeks.
Has anyone else dealt with this kind of misalignment? Could this just be the result of muscle atrophy and ligament tightening? My Achilles is a bastard right now, and rotating my foot (while at rest like in the pic) to force it straight while my leg is apparently straight sends some nasty signals up my ankle to the fibula break site, so I just don’t know what to think.
Any insight whatsoever would be immensely appreciated
Peacock dress skirt progress
Thank you all for the deluge of compliments on my prior post! I’m still housebound with little else to do but work on this, and the current version is way more visually satisfying than what I posted previously, so I figured some of you might be interested to see 🦚
2 weeks + 2 days post-OP tib+fib oblique fracture, already cleared for FWB?!
First pic: today’s X-rays
Last 2 pics: fresh out of surgery + my initial break
Had my first follow up since surgery today, got my staples out, and my surgeon was extremely adamant I start FWB, even suggesting I go without crutches. I’ve had a horrible mental block for any kind of WB because I’m freaked out by my fibula just free floating (tbh still am even after today’s feedback) but also primarily because the inflammation in my food and ankle is unbearable and my knee is so weak and painful from the insertion site that they all just conspire together and make my leg give out.
I was on meloxicam initially for inflammation, but that script ran its course and doc only mentioned he wanted me to stay on aspirin.
Can any other tib+fib-ers chime in? Were you FWB this early, too? Any tips other than elevation and ice for the horrendous inflammation?Obviously I trust the medical professional knows his stuff, but yk how it is to not feel so alone in this and hear from others’ experiences.
Finally getting somewhere with the skirt of this dress
Had design paralysis for ages. Now I have a broken leg and lost my entire summer so I’m stuck inside with little else to do but chew on this, so I’ve been steadily chipping away at dozens and dozens of eyes. I want to make it as large as possible, but as you can see by the third pic the repeats start to separate, so I might have to get either very creative with layering or the Irish lace technique. Or chainmaille… bc this will have a lot of maille embellishments by the end, as well.
The pattern for the feather motif is my Peacocking Feather, otherwise everything is freehanded 🤠 yarn shall not be named bc the company went to the AI dogs and I don’t want to give them any business 🫡
Tib/fib fracture last Sunday, 6 days post-op, is this kind of pain normal?
Snapped my leg clean in half rollerblading last Sunday, they stuck a nail down my tibia but left the fibula free floating. In the past two days there’s been a horrible evolution to my pain localizing at the injury site (whereas it’s mostly been at the screw sites thus far) to where when I stand from any sitting/laying position, it feels like acid and lava pooling straight in the fracture site and pummeling me like a lightning strike.
It dissipates after a few minutes but leaves me literally in tears/breathless/almost screaming in agony every time I have to get up. I’m going to call my Dr tomorrow (they’re closed rn obviously) but any reassurance that this kind of pain is normal would really help keep my panic under check. I also was able to weight bear on crutches up until Friday, but not anymore with this atom bomb going off in my leg.
And yes I have pain meds (5mg oxycodone every six hours) and no they don’t touch this whatsoever 🫠
No other aggressive symptoms so far as I can tell. No fever etc, bruising around my heel is slowly healing, but swelling and associated ankle ROM immobility has remained pretty much the same.
I call it the “Peacocking Shawl”—crocheted w a lot of blood swears and tears ✨
This is an original design, and the yarn is from a company which pivoted heavily to AI long after I’d built up a sizable stash, so while I will keep using the yarn, I will not name them to give them anymore free advertising or business🫡
Anyway this thing is HUGE and I plan to make a black and red goth version next!
I love this city so much
Dictating this absolutely high off of adrenaline. Went downtown to skate with a cycling group, then branched off to zoom home on my own. A usual thing for me, but tonight had plans in the works it seems.
First, I almost got run over by some dickhead at a red light because he wanted to do an illegal right turn and literally started ramming his car into the back of my legs as I stood in the cycling lane. Couple blocks down, a girls crossing the street asks me if I’m OK because of that incident, I assure her I’m fine and I’m reinvigorated by her kindness.
A little further on, a very boisterous gaggle of tween boys on scooters passed me by and cheer at my LED wheels. Ordinarily they would startle me bc tweens are so moodily unpredictable bless em; but these were some good lads.
A little further on, I stumble up upon Midsummer fest on Clark Street, I had no idea that was going on. Proceeded to cool off with some shave ice, get chatted up by an extremely handsome man about my pastel pink cargo pants, get a bevy of compliments abt my skates, and purchase a wonderful necklace from a vendor who regales me with her skating endeavors back in Puerto Rico. I exchange information with her about our various skate groups and tell her I hope I’ll see her at one of them.
I then sprint the rest of the way home with house music bumping down the smoothest darkest emptiest side streets. I definitely hit 25 mph at one point.
It’s a near daily occurrence to feel replenished about life since moving here after moldering for five years in a dying city back in North Carolina, but some nights really do take the cake. I love this city so goddamn much.
I call the design my “Peacocking Shawl”
Been playing around w crochet appliqués for a peacock mermaid dress and took a design detour to make this 🌈
New shawl design 🌈 🦚
Took my “Peacocking Feather” appliqué to new heights with a fuck off massive shawl lmao. This all started w a dress (that is still in the works….) and then my brain ran with all the ways I could use the feather for different garments. I have plans for a coat and skirt, as well, but this is gonna be the next pattern :)
(Yarn is from a company which shall not be named bc they’ve done a hard pivot to AI bs and screwed over their affiliate pattern designers, so I refuse to give them any more free marketing than I already have. Iykyk, and if not, that’s all the better.)
