Question about a scene in Deadwood: The Movie
In Deadwood The movie, in the scene where Al Swearengen and Seth Bullock meet, at the end as Seth is leaving, Al says, "Bullock, where have you been?" and Seth responds, "right across the street". Seth grins as he says it. What is the meaning of this exchange?
This is what I think: Earlier, Al asks Seth Did it ever occur to you to go at a thing other than straight?", meaning the simple direct way and Seth responds by saying no.
In the last exchange I mentioned, I thought Al was asking Seth why he hasn't come by to visit in such a long time. Of course, he asked in an indirect way.
Seth replies in a literal but indirect way by avoiding the question while grinning. Thereby, showing Al that he actually can avoid being straightforward and direct but I also think that he avoided answering directly because Seth was busy raising a family and did not want to have anything to do with Al because of his criminal activities.
What do you think?
