I don't think any civ beats Polynesia on culture and tourism yields*
*but you have to play on an Archipelego map. (Immortal. Large. Epic speed)
I know it is not the most played map type, but the sheer number ruines you collect before the AI on this map type with Polynesia is very strong. You also meet a lot of city states which actually makes patronage openings pretty viable
I got a nice set of islands and expands for maximum Maoi yields, since I was stupid ahead I ensured that World Fair and International Games took place _after_ I got Sydney Opera House, and the double broadcast tower glitch with CN Tower along with hotels, airports and national visitor centre (Hotels and airports turn Maois culture yields into tourism)
All my saved up writers gave me 2 full social policy trees in 1 turn
Also eventually took Athens cause Alexander is back stabbing war mongering pos, which had Prora which made my happiness numbers insane
Bonus, somehow did not get denounced by backstabbers like Ramkhamhaeng, Theodora
I really think if you're having a hard time in hard difficulty I suggest you try Polynesia on Archipelego

The conquistadors vision is super under-rated
I feel like whatever tier lists I see only tend to focus on the settling city aspect but not the vision.
If you get the sight upgrade and a hill till you can see 5 tiles away, and I think only planes grant you that kind of vision in the game (Was reminded of American units)
If you've teched into military the amount of vision they provide is extremely useful.
Warfare. Your ranged promoted crossbows benefit a lot from this, you can seige cities without taking damage. It's also very helpful when turtling.
Even in modern era, that vision is very usefull when you're taking a small army to assist an ally or city state in war far from home. Personally I like to get the medic promotions on them because doubling a units healing rate in neutral or enemy territory is a pretty big advantage imo.
In mid game exploration it's immensely satisfying to see vast amounts of fog lift in a single turn

Garbage city, denounced by garbage leader, but great canal.
It truly amazes me how much of life this game can replicate sometimes. I (spain) really wanna slap Polynesia, but... if I declare war I lose a very crucial trade route to my Ethiopian colonies.

Xhaka become public enemy so we all warred him
He offered me Jakarta which had Collosus (Free trade route) and Great Light House (+1 sight and movement for navy). It was too good despite administrative and defensive issues
