Prominent martyrs of sikhs day 1

Shaheed(martyr) bhai bachittar singh ji

Son of martyr bhai mani singh ji
He had a family full of martyrs including father, maternal grandfather, uncles, 2 sons and countless cousins (all martyrs in different occasions)

Widely known for being selected by guru gobind singh ji to single handedly killing a drunk and armoured elephant sent by mughals to bring down the gate of lohgarh fort on September 1st 1700 using only a NAGNI spear (spear shaped like a snake) which is still preserved to this day (slide 3&4)

*Death*
An account cited that after Singh fought on the bank of a stream called Sarsa, where all of his companions perished, he was wounded during an encounter with the Mughal army on his way to Ropar. Bachittar Singh's wounds proved to be fatal. He succumbed to his injuries and died on 8 December 1705. Nihang Khan had the cremation performed secretly the following night.

Why Suffering and evil exist (my understanding)

To understand this you will have to either be religious doesn’t matter which one or atleast have understanding of religious claims

Also as a sikh i will be quoting some scriptures but i think those can be universally accepted

Now there are two parts to actually understand this

  1. *infinite being, beyond time*

To keep this simple, god is beyond time and is infinite, you cant understand the plan of god because we are bound to time and to understand a infinite plan we have to be infinite too, and every action has some kind of consequence which could be good or bad which is essential what happens in this world

We have been given almost complete free will by god to actually live our life and not just be puppets but since we choose the actions he chooses the consequences

  1. *two sides of a coin*

This is best explained by the words

“Paurī. Khandā prithmai sāj kai jin sabh saisār aupāiā.”
“God created the khanda in the beginning followed by everything else “

Khanda being arguably one of the most important weapon and symbolism for sikhs

Khanda is a double edged sword with a blunt top which blends and combines both edges

This represents the fact that everything that we see has a opposite side but both sides eventually meet and become one which is god

Which explains that is theres truth theres lie
If theres wealth theres poverty
Similarly if theres good theres evil

If evil doesnt exist good doesnt either and vice versa

A coin will always have a opposite side

Hope this helps and i am open to hearing other people’s interpretations and claims

Also dont bother ‘preaching’ your religion to me you will just make a fool out of yourself

The word religion is too restrictive

I am a sikh

And most sikhs feel that the English word religion doesn’t quite explain sikhi

In our language sikhi is defined as a “panth” and there isnt actually any words that can be equivalent to that except for maybe “path to god” but even thats too restrictive

Sikhi doesn’t associate with any one religion but the teachings are similar to some religions
