stripped nose threads

I guess nose cap was not tight enough? Can this be fixed or did I ruin the tool?

drain pipe too short

bought a push button drain for bathroom sink to replace old popup drain. But the new drain pipe isn’t long enough to fit into inside p-trap. Do drains come in different lengths?

And I can’t find a p-trap like this old ABS plastic one - all the new ones at Lowes and Home Depot have the lockring threads on the p-trap but my old system has the threads on the outflow pipe.

Pre-drilling question

I'm new to diy and woodworking. Often it's recommended to pre-drill a hole before screwing in a wood screw. One uses a bit the same diameter as the screw shaft but smaller than the threads.

I got an assortment of drill bits for general diy around the house. I've had a few projects that involve buying a kit, such as for installing a deadbolt or shelves. The kits come with wood screws.

I often find that the screws that come with kits are longer than the bit that fits the screw shaft. For example the screw is three inches long but the matching bit is 2 3/4 inches. Is that common? Do people just swap the screws that came with the kit for shorter ones? Or do people buy extra long bits somewhere?

Popup drain threads not high enough for old sink w/ overflow

Replacing pivot-rod style with push popup. But threads for locknut don’t go high enough on the drain pipe. This is an overflow sink but circa 1984 (porcelain). Do suitable drains exist or am I condemned to replacing the basin? (or sticking with the original setup)
