Is there a consensus (among sociologists) about the quality of Jason Arday's work?

In the UK press much has been made of the non-academic aspects of his behaviour, presumably because neither the writers nor their readers know nor care about the academic aspects. I have Googled for articles from people qualified to comment but have not found anything trustworthy.

Anyhow, while I am a (retired) scientist I was a physicist and I find myself completely unable to judge Arday's work. I would guess any sociologists hereabouts would prefer not to get involved - that would certainly be my position - but if anyone can comment or can point me towards a reputable article on the subject I would be very interested to find out more.

A footnote:

I have no wish to stoke any controversy. I have no opinion on the subject because I'm unqualified to comment - I wish neither to bury Arday, not to praise him. I'm hoping there will be people hereabouts who can comment on his work.

Brown meat

Sitting in a puddle of its brown juices. Mr. Morrison, if you're wondering why you're struggling this is a clue.

It may or may not still be safe to eat, but it's not a great look now is it?

Burns the Bread, Wells, Somerset, UK

Bacon and chicken sandwich, two Cornish pasties and a white loaf for £2.29.

Actually I didn't really want the white loaf, but the sandwich and pasties alone make it great value for £2.29. Note that the price seems to depend on when you order. I got the £2.29 by ordering at the last minute but I have seen prices over £3 at other times of the day.

How do Tesco make the chocolate icing on their eclairs?

Traditionally the icing on a chocolate eclair would be a ganache, but I don't think that's how Tesco make it. The texture is different and the way it feels in the mouth is different. My best guess is that it's some form of water based icing. Maybe with cocoa powder or some other chocolate flavouring added?

If anyone knows how the icing is made please tell me as it's delicious and I'd love to be able to make it for myself.

How to enable PSRAM using menuconfig - S3 with IDF v5.5.1

The Espressif documentation says:

>Configure the PSRAM
To enable PSRAM, please enable the CONFIG_SPIRAM under Component config / Hardware Settings menu. Then all the PSRAM related configurations will be visible under SPI RAM config menu.

but when I run menuconfig I don't see this option:

https://preview.redd.it/a3yjryaox67h1.png?width=562&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9317fb4bcb047bb958318e992968ea5dbcf99e3

I assume the PSRAM is not enabled because when I call:

in_buf = (uint8_t*) heap_caps_malloc(INBUF_SIZE, MALLOC_CAP_SPIRAM);

it returns null.

Can I use a compiled static library (.a file) in a sketch?

I use the Arduino IDE for programming ESP32s, but some of the components that Espressif provide for the ESP32 are only provided as precompiled static libraries i.e. .a files.

In particular the ESP_NEW_JPEG is not provided as source but only as a .a file. The component works fine (actually very well indeed) when I use the Espressif ESP-IDF toolchain, but I am curious to see if I can use it in an Arduino sketch.

I'm guessing the answer is no since I cannot find any mention of using precompiled libraries in the sketch specification, but if anyone knows a way this can be done I would be very interested to learn about it.

Has Lidl UK discontinued their frozen Simply Macaroni Cheese?

This one:

A few months ago my local Lidl stopped stocking it, but then after a couple weeks it reappeared. But now it has disappeared again and has been gone for over a month. It's a shame because it's nicer than the Tesco Mac & Cheese, which is the only other option where I live.

If anyone has upgraded to v3.3.9 of Espressif's ESP32 board library for the Arduino IDE ...

It has a bug and will give you an error that flasher.exe is missing when you try to upload. I think this might be flasher.py on Linux but I only use Windows so I can't easily check.

The easy fix is to revert to v3.3.8.

The only slightly more complicated fix is to download flasher.exe (or flasher.py on Linux) and manually copy it to the directory indicated in the error message. The link for the download is in the issue report here.

Tall tree with white flowers in UK

What is this tree with white flowers. I doubt it's anything exotic because it's growing in a field in Somerset, England, but I have never seen such a large tree with white flowers.
