I recently acquired my RAV4 with 56000 miles. A brake light is out. The replacement bulb is a 7443. Can I substitute LEDs? Do the LEDs have to be CANBUS compatible?

I recently acquired my first Rav4 Hybrid (56000miles). A brake light is out. The recommended bulb is 7443. I thought if I am going to replace it, I might as well use LEDs. Does the LED have to be CANBUS compatible? Thanks
