Premonition

Premonition

It was a beautiful sunny day! Cheezborger was in her car, driving down the interstate to a summer retreat in Florida! Her friends were in their own cars, and they all planned to meet up there. After pulling into Route 23 and stopping to give a homeless woman some money, Chee started to notice some things…a school bus with a bunch of rowdy boys shouting “pile up!”…a driver drinking beer while ironically driving a beer truck saying “drink responsibly”…a little kid in his dad’s car smashing toy cars together…and a large log truck, whose horn snapped Chee out of her funk, as she swerved to let it through. Chee felt an ominous vibe from these events, but surely she was just being paranoid right? Well…

Suddenly, the chains holding the logs down on the truck broke, the logs falling off and bouncing down the road. Chikn only had enough time to see a log barreling at him before it crashed through both the front window and his face, killing him instantly. And the carnage didn’t end there: Onyn’s attempts to dodge the logs resulted in him falling off his motorcycle and being crushed by it against a log. Iscream ended up in the crosshairs of a garbage truck, which plowed through their car, sending it up in flames. Slushi’s car flipped over bumper first, making her neck snap against her seatbelt. The brake pedal in Sassparilla’s car became blocked by a water bottle, leading both her and Sody to die in one last explosion. Chee, meanwhile, was laying in her wrecked car, injured but alive. She then caught a glimpse of a horribly burned Hawt Saus, trapped in his car and screaming desperately for help, only to be bulldozed by a giant semi truck that looked to be from the depths of hell itself. And right when it looked to be coming for Chee…she was suddenly driving down the road again!

“Was that all just a dream?” Chee wondered. “I guess I didn’t get enough sleep last night…” But when she saw things from her “dream” happen again—the homeless woman, the school bus, the beer truck—she knew: that wasn’t a dream, that was a warning! So, to try and save her friends from the impending disaster, she blocked the road with her car, parking it sideways. Her friends all stepped out of their cars, confused. Chikn walked up to her and asked what was wrong. “There’s gonna be a huge accident, and that log truck is gonna start it all!” She shouted as it drove past. “Now now, I think you’re overreacting Chee…” Chikn started to say…but at that moment, Chee’s fears were proven right, as they all soon witnessed one of the worst pile ups their world had ever seen…

A commentary on Chikn's role in the Onyn Ring arc.

So, I saw a post talking about the "Onyn's hometown is perfectly normal" theory, and after reading it, I've decided to give my own two cents on this. You see, here's my thing: If that DOES happen, and Onyn Ring turns out to be completely in the wrong here, then that just leaves me with one question:

What is CHIKN'S arc here?

Let's be absolutely clear: Chikn is the protagonist of the show. Out of the main cast, he's the "mainest" one, so to speak. And not only that, but he's the TITLE CHARACTER, so you'd expect him to be a major player in the story.

Now, let's consider what would happen if the scenario described above happens: They get to the town, and it turns out Onyn was just blowing things out of proportion. So...what exactly is Chikn gonna do here? Help Onyn see the error of his ways, tell him "It'll Be OK", and then go back to living his life? I mean, that's fine, I suppose, but it's not really too interesting, is it? Doesn't exactly scream "Main character arc" to me.

It gets worse if Onyn rejects that and tries to manipulate Chikn to cause the apocalypse, because then it'd just become a retread of the first arc, except for one thing: Chikn's motivation, or rather, his lack thereof.

See, while Chikn WAS manipulated to cause the apocalypse in Arc one, he still had his own reasons for doing so. Bezel may have planted the seeds of doubt in Chikn's mind, hinting at Chikn's demi-godly nature directly to him, but what really caused the dominos to fall was Chikn seeing Chee, the person who was supposed to be his "Bestest friend forever and ever", completely neglect him in favor of her girlfriend. This led to Chikn thinking about how out of all his friends, he was the only one to not really have a "partner". This further compounded into him feeling straight up abandoned, which was the perfect opportunity for Bezel to feast on Chikn's insecurities and make Armageddon happen. When all was said and done, Chikn eventually realized that he couldn't force Chee to be with him, and he learned to be more accepting of her and other's choices.

OK, decent character arc, right? Now imagine that, but Chikn HAS no insecurities for the manipulator to feast on. THAT'S what you get if Onyn becomes evil due to there being nothing wrong with his town. Putting aside how Onyn wouldn't have anything to manipulate Chikn with, Chikn himself would be stripped of all his agency and basically be turned into a walking plot device. Now, I don't know about you, but to me that seems like pretty bad writing for your MAIN CHARACTER.

However, that brings me to my next point: What do I think WOULD be good writing for Chikn in this arc?

Let's go back to arc one. Specifically, the end of the first half, before Cofi and Chee's date. Chikn thinks about how good everything feels when he's with his friends. As if his problems don't seem to matter... A nice sentiment sure, but I think this highlights one of Chikn's flaws: his inability to deal with problems.

I mean, he COULD'VE talked with someone about his problems, but he instead just stayed away from everyone else, as he didn't want to face the issue. He just wanted things to stay the same. He wanted "Normalcy", if you will. Thus, he let himself be led astray. And after the Demigod thing got wrapped up, though Chikn's attachment issues got better, his aversion to problems only seemed to get WORSE; take the "Little Treat" short, for example. Instead of dealing with the problems around him, he just hides himself with "cute and nice" things, but as one of the comments says, the problems don't actually go away, they just seem more bareable. But they're still there.

And therein lies the crux of Chikn's arc: his escapism. He wants to escape anything bad, so that he can continue living without a care in the world...but pretty soon, he's going to have to face reality. And it seems like Onyn is going to teach him the hard way...

Anyway, thanks for reading this long, long post. Pease, don't think I'm trying to act like this is the only correct way for the arc to play out, or that you're wrong for wanting Onyn to be evil. This is just my silly rambling opinion, and it's fine if you disagree. I'm just putting my thoughts out there for anyone who cares.

Jeez, people are REALLY getting mad over a DEMO, huh?

I've seen SO MANY people talking about how Groove sucks and doesn't feel like Rhythm Heaven, but...these are FIVE GAMES. Out of EIGHTY. People are REALLY quick to jump to calling this game bland and uninspired when this is only ONE SIXTEENTH of the game. And that's not even counting all the other stuff! We have NO IDEA where Groove is going, and it sucks seeing it be judged off of such a small sample size.

Please just be patient, everyone. I'm sure the full game will surprise us all.

This is Dohnit. He’ll be my Chiknsona; when you see him talking, it’ll basically be me talking. I hope y’all have a good time with him.
