Humiliating the AI - Aaron

2026 has had a very “humans vs AI” vibe. This inspired me to find a way to destroy one. I couldn’t think of a better way to do this than to humiliate the Pokemon league leaders in creative ways. I understand that the true AI villains of 2026 are the water gluttons and not video game characters, but I know I can destroy the latter without any negative climate change consequences.

As someone heavily involved in PVP from 2007 to 2009, my personal opinion is that creativity is punished in PVP. Usually 5% or less of all Pokemon are able to stand a chance in a tournament at any given time and anyone who chooses not to use those Pokemon will be punished. This led me to switch my focus to an alternative channel.

When the focus is humans vs AI, creativity is rewarded. In a typical playthrough, players will typically build a team where there are no two Pokemon of the same type, no two moves of the same type, a balance of physical and special move users, and a balance of offensive and defensive Pokemon. There are many ways to put a team like this together. The rewarding part is being able to include your favourite Pokemon on your team as their shortfalls will be covered by their teammates.

For this video when I built my team I instead asked myself “does this Pokemon enable the best strategy available for this game’s strongest opponents?” Sometimes that means doubling up on types. I believe that having the best strategy means you can succeed with underleveled and/or underrated Pokemon without opening the bag during battle and while playing without shift mode. Ideally all Pokemon and moves used can be acquired in the region of the Pokemon challenge before the challenge is fought. Some people believe that banning setup moves creates a bigger challenge. I won’t argue with that, but I believe enabling setup moves maximizes strategic depth.

I would love to watch or read what you believe is the best strategy for this game’s Pokemon league. This is not a Nuzlocke (I prefer to choose my Pokemon) but I have a lot of respect for those who have completed these.

I got Brilliant Diamond on November 19, 2021 as Platinum had always been my favourite game. I’ll admit I was somewhat disappointed with the game at the time. After catching Heatran in December 2021 and unlocking the master class leagues in the battle tower in January 2022 I lost interest in the game. The playthrough didn’t feel as entertaining as the Platinum playthrough, as the Distortion world was my favourite part of Platinum. However, this year I decided to focus on the things that made BDSP great: it’s the game with the most challenging Pokemon League (in my opinion), and the Pokemon get cool moves that they couldn’t obtain in Platinum. TMs that were once only available at the battle frontier could be found in the underground early in the game, enabling a new range of strategies previously unavailable. Playing BDSP was one of the best experiences I had this year. I beat the regular league with two separate teams and beat the post-Heatran rematch league with two separate teams, and all were very challenging and exciting to me. In all runs I disabled the affection mechanic by causing my Pokemon to repeatedly faint and reviving them with revival herbs.

I am very grateful to be part of this community of people striving to become the best. As humans, we will need to work together to ensure that our strategies will always outmatch the strategies executed by future AI. Let’s see your way of humiliating the AI.

As Pokemon XD doesn’t have a Pokemon league I had to get even more creative. I decided to take on Mount Battle before visiting Citadark Isle. Battlus was very difficult to outmatch. My plan going into the battle was to charm the Dusclops to -6 attack so I could focus on taking out the larger threats. However, it turns out that Battlus just switches out when its attack stat gets too low. This led to me using 2 hyper potions which I was hoping to avoid. I knew I would have lost without them. At least with the imprison threat out of the picture I was able to use ice beam. I would love to watch or read what strategy you believe is best for this challenge.

Watching the Emerald community in-game tier list being assembled this year was quite valuable to me as I got to observe intelligent people debating which Pokemon were top performers and which Pokemon were poor performers and why they believed this. I understand that the community tier list built this year classifies the performance of Pokemon based on the entire playthrough and not just for the Pokemon league. I would like to see what a Pokemon league specific tier list would look like. Gorebyss and Ninjask would probably be ranked A. Regardless, my goal for Emerald was to give lower tier Pokemon the opportunity to have their moment. A big thank you to Awkward-State-2364 for facilitating the tier lists. It’s not a simple task.

Platinum is my favourite game and was the first game I attempted this challenge with. My main focus here was to use the lowest level team possible while avoiding the use of Pokemon known for being the best. The “Daily Pokemon Discussion” guides on every Sinnoh dex Pokemon written by ianlazrbeem22 were incredibly useful for me and I would reference them often while building the team. Some of the information also applied to other games which made those challenges easier as well. The pages can be found easily by searching “Daily Pokemon Discussion [Sinnoh Pokemon]”. If you want to learn more about how to optimize your favourite Sinnoh Pokemon then I recommend looking there first. I originally planned on having Mamoswine on my team but I couldn’t find a way to make it fit in the team for this challenge so I switched to Girafarig.

Fun calc:

+6 Lvl 41 252+ Atk 28 IVs Expert Belt Electivire Ice Punch vs. Lvl 62 0 HP 30 IVs / 0 Def 30 IVs Garchomp on a critical hit: 744-878 (332.1 - 391.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Does anyone here battle the rich couple using a Camerupt with a team of eggs?

I feel like it’s a good way to get two things done at once

Crobat Appreciation Day

Today is Crobat appreciation day. Share what you like most about Crobat.

For me personally I remember Crobat being a meaningful component of my first playthrough of Gold version which I opened as a present on Christmas 1999. I had a Crobat very early in the game and I enjoyed whenever the antagonist (who I nicknamed “loser”, just like I nicknamed Gary “loser” in blue version) would face me with just a Golbat. All throughout Johto he didn’t deserve a Crobat because his behaviour was so terrible. When I beat the Pokemon league I thought the game was over and I had a sour feeling after because of how rude and unfriendly the antagonist was throughout the whole game. Then I start exploring Kanto and in mt moon he still has a Golbat but his behaviour seems better. It made me think there might still be hope for him after all. You can occasionally catch him at the dragon’s den working on self improvement. Then sure enough, the next time you see him he has a Crobat on his team. I was happy for him. He had finally changed his behaviour enough for his Golbat to respect him. In future playthroughs I didn’t nickname him “loser” because I had seen who he had become and in my opinion it was no loser.

Do you remember your first Crobat?
