I'm good at being alone but I don't want to be and now I'm worried it's too late

Turning 37 next month and grew up an only child with baby boomer parents who had me later than average. On my dad's side, I'm the only grandchild. On my mom's side, I have some cousins but my mom's emotional instability made contact with her side of the family pretty fraught, and besides - my cousins all come in sibling pairs so when I did see them oftentimes the siblings would for some reason exclusively play with each other and I'd just be stuck in a room with all the adults anyways.

My parents were determined that I wouldn't become "spoiled" and long story short I'm still working on not feeling guilty about expressing my needs or asking for things. I also wasn't allowed to watch tv, play video games, see certain movies or eat certain foods so was pretty ignorant of everything my peers were into, this meant making friends at school was a challenge. Adults loved me and I was constantly being called "wise beyond my years" or "an adult soul." I spent a lot of time entertaining myself and got really good at being solitary.

I evolved into an extreme people pleaser and stayed in two back to back unhealthy relationships in my early 20s just because I was desperate to feel a sense of family and connection. Then my dad died and my partner at the time was completely useless in supporting me, my mom was a mess, and I ended up handling the responsibility of notifying friends and relatives, writing the obituary, comforting all the crying people at the grave site, and then MC-ing the memorial service. I was praised for how composed and together I was. I went back to my city and job a week later.

My dad dying (and then my last living grandparent a few years later) shook loose something in me and I spent the next decade trying to make myself happy and give myself nice experiences and things. Broke up with my shitty ex, tried to support my mom while also setting boundaries with her, and experienced some relatively healthy relationships for a change, although they were short term. Did a lot of therapy. I finally cultivated a community of friends, I have hobbies, I live by myself in an apartment I've decorated to my liking with an amazing dog but I still just feel ... lonely a lot of the time. Pretty much all my friends have partners, siblings they're close to, best friends that aren't me, both parents still alive, family group chats - I know it's unhealthy to compare, and I've shared a lot of my history and experiences with them openly, but it's still hard.

Dating seems way more complicated than it was when I was younger - family is always such a common first or second date topic and I don't want to bum anyone out. I love my space and independence and don't necessarily want to move in with someone right away (or maybe ever) but I'm still craving connection and love and a witness to my life. I feel like I might have missed my window, or like I'm so used to being alone that it feels like that's the way it will always be. I definitely don't blame all of my issues on being an only child, and know I should continue to work on myself, but I don't know, I'm just tired and wanted to vent. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

White truck hit and run near I-5 South 84 east exit?

About an hour ago I was driving down I-5 and changing lanes to get over to the 84 exit near the Rose Quarter. A white pickup truck sped up behind me and then seemingly deliberately scraped themselves past me on the right side between my car and the concrete barrier, then crossed in front of me to speed down I-5 South. Their truck made contact with both my car and the barrier and my car is scraped all over the right side - thankfully I’m ok and not injured. But, I stupidly don’t have a dash cam and I’m wondering if anyone witnessed this and/or has been menaced by the same white truck today. Police report 2026-917955. Thank you.

Your swelling will go down!

The hardest part of my recovery was really freaky looking asymmetrical swelling. My left armpit area was tender and sore and seemed huge to me for several weeks. I went to the surgeon’s clinic to get it checked out and they said they felt some fluid in it but it wasn’t in a safe place to drain and that my body would reabsorb it in time. I was so stressed and irrationally thought I would end up with a lopsided chest forever, extra skin, or a dog ear. Turns out, everyone is right when they tell you to be patient and trust the process. At my finally post op checkup at 6 weeks post op my surgeon also assured me that the swelling would continue to go down for another few months and that they don’t consider the result to be final until one year. But I’m already soooo happy with how everything is turning out and feel silly for being so anxious.

Pics from 1.5 weeks post op, 3 weeks post op, one month post op, and 6.5 weeks post op.

One month post op! (Nonbinary, no T)

Recovery has definitely more challenging than I expected. I’m still waiting for some swelling around my armpits to go down, particularly on my left side. My nipple scabs are finally just falling off this week. I’m still tired and sore, but have no regrets overall. My surgeon was Dr. Blair Peters at OHSU - pre op it was hard to find pictures of his results, so hopefully this helps someone else! Shoutout to this community for being so helpful and kind, even though I’ve mostly just been lurking the past couple years.

Riddled with anxiety that something will go wrong and my surgery will be postponed

I'm having top surgery next Wednesday 5/20 and it's been an incredibly taxing two year process to get it scheduled and to set everything up. I've stayed at a toxic job way longer than I expected just for the insurance benefits (USA) because I was on a waiting list for a consultation, then I had to wait to get everything approved and authorized, then my therapist letter expired so I had to get a new one, finally I got scheduled in November for this May date.

I've been sooo happy the past few months just knowing it was ahead, but now I'm suddenly so anxious I feel like I'm crawling out of my skin. It's not about the surgery itself - I want it, I need it! It's that I'll get to the hospital and they'll deny me for some reason. Like, I'll get sick on the day. They'll want to reschedule. They'll tell me I don't qualify anyone. My boss shifts our insurance plans around in the same network every year, which hasn't been a problem so far in keeping my consults and appointments and scheduling, but I just noticed my new insurance card has a different group number than my previous one (member ID and company still the same!) which is causing me to spiral. My company is too small for HR, and my boss is so vague I don't even know when the new insurance is kicking in. I feel like a crazy person and I know this probably won't matter ultimately. Yesterday I was spiraling that I wouldn't have enough money for the estimate/copay up front, but I just got the document in MyChart, it was less than expected, and I paid it off already and feel fine.

Everything is set up with a meal train and friends to drive me and pick me up on the day and at the post op appointment and walk my dog when I'm recovering. I got approved for paid leave. I'm going to the gym and doing chores and breathing exercises and pretty much anything I can do to try to keep the anxiety at bay. Everything will be ok right?
