Finally upgraded my SP’s knobs

Made it through trial and error. The 1st set of knobs I ordered had their locking screws too deep so the D-shafts of the SP didn’t reach the screws.

I later ordered a fatter, 17mm set of gold-colored knobs with shallower locking screws, they fit perfectly! The Value Knob is in silver, 12.5mm.

To protect the plastic D-shafts of the SP from the metal screw locks, I had ChatGPT design me a 3d model of a shim, which will be the one in contact with the screw instead of the D-shaft, and 3d printed it. I also 3d-printed a cylindrical spacer for the value knob to give it space for its clicks.

I made a quick SP-404MKII shortcut cheat sheet

Just started learning this beautifully complicated SP-404MKII, and after watching a bunch of YouTube tutorials I realized there are a lot of shortcut/key combos buried in this thing.

Too many for me to memorize without constantly forgetting half of them, so I opened up Roland’s manual and made a card-style shortcut cheat sheet for quick reference.

Each card has:

  • the shortcut combo, with icon buttons
  • a short explanation
  • categories
  • search
  • favorites
  • a faceplate view with the buttons highlighted

That last part was the big one for me. I kept squinting at the SP-404MKII and the Roland manual trying to figure out exactly which button I needed to press, so I added a visual panel view that highlights the controls used for each shortcut.

It’s just a self-contained .html file, so there’s no app install needed.

How to open:

  • PC/Mac (tested): just open the .html file in your browser.
  • iPhone (tested in Edge, I have not found a way to open with Chrome or Safari): in Files, long-press the .html file → Share → choose Edge → Open in Microsoft Edge.. (will not work if you just press the it directly because it will be opened using Files app instead of a web browser)
  • Android (tested): open the .html file with your browser.

This is mostly something I made for my own learning, but I figured other SP-404MKII users might find it handy too, especially when you forget a combo mid-session.

Unofficial, of course. Just a personal cheat sheet based on the manual.
