Portable speaker recommendation for SP-404 MK2 (THR5-ish footprint)?
Hey everyone,
Looking for a speaker to pair with my SP-404 MK2 for travel this summer. I’ll eventually get proper monitors for home, but that’s a separate purchase — right now I specifically need something portable enough to throw in a bag or suitcase when I travel.
The main source will be the 404 (beats, sampling, jamming on the go), and it would also be nice for playing back references and listening to music. It doesn’t have to be tiny — I’m thinking roughly around the footprint of a Yamaha THR5 (271 × 167 × 120 mm, 2 kg), and a bit bigger is totally fine if it really pays off in sound.
A few things I care about: stereo is pretty much a must since the 404 is very much a stereo instrument and mono kills half the fun. I’d want enough headroom to actually enjoy the beats, not just whisper-quiet bedroom level. Battery power would be a nice bonus but not a dealbreaker. And I’d prefer something with a reasonably honest response rather than a Bluetooth speaker that smashes everything into a smiley EQ.
Budget is open but reasonable, since the “real” monitors are coming later anyway.
I’ve seen people mention the Roland CUBE Street EX, Bose S1 Pro, and various small PA options, but I’m curious what people here are actually using on the road with their 404. Recommendations welcome 🙏

Is anyone using a groovebox for ambient/progressive rock/psychedelic music?
I'm wondering if/how I could use a groovebox like the SP404 mk2, as the brains of a setup for synth-based ambient/progressive rock. I'd like to loop stuff, play multisamples (like mellotrons etc), process sound from multiple synths and trigger one-shots. Does anyone use these in this way? Most of the videos I see in YT are techno/house/beat-making stuff.
[Lo-fi Jungle] A soundscape inspired by the Australian landscape and Flume’s atmosphere (Made on SP-404)
I’ve been diving deep into blending the raw, gritty energy of Lo-fi Jungle with the lush, atmospheric textures that I’ve always admired in Flume’s sound.
This track came from a very personal place. I spent 6 years living in Tasmania, Australia, and there’s something about the balance of that wild, expansive nature and the urban pulse of cities like Melbourne and Sydney that always stuck with me. Coming back to my hometown of Sendai, I found a similar resonance—a mix of urban life and distant horizons.
I’ve been chasing that "淡く切ない" (faint and bittersweet) yet groovy, rich vibe that Flume masters, but lately, I’ve been channeling it through the breakbeats of Jungle. It’s a crossover experiment, made entirely on my SP-404, following my own intuition.
Would love to hear what you think of this balance between the grit and the atmosphere.

SP-404MK2 as FX only vs resampling first. Should there be a sound difference?
Hey everyone,
I did a small test today with my MPC1000 and SP-404MK2. I took the same drum loop and ran it through the SP-404MK2 with the same effects/settings in two ways:
- Drum loop through the SP-404MK2, directly recorded into the MPC1000
- Drum loop recorded/resampled on the SP-404MK2 first, then recorded into the MPC1000
Same loop, same effects, same gain staging as close as possible. Real talk: I honestly can’t hear a difference.
Should I? Or are my ears just trash? I always thought that recording/resampling into the SP-404MK2 itself would maybe add some extra character from the converters or internal recording stage, compared to only using it as an FX box and recording straight into the MPC.
Is the “SP sound” mostly just the effects, compression, resampling workflow, gain staging, and maybe the lo-fi modes, rather than the normal recording converters adding obvious color?
Curious what others think, especially people who use the SP-404MK2 with an MPC or other hardware samplers.
What's The 404
What up everybody? I just wanted to introduce myself. I've been in this community for quite a bit of time. Unfortunately I haven't posted a lot in here but I definitely its time for that to change. I started a series off of my 404 called "What's The 404" and I wanted to at least share it in here. I hope you all enjoy it.
In this video I cover the evolution of the 404 from the OG to the MK2. If there is anything I'm missing please feel free to comment on it and let me know. If you learned something new, feel free to share that as well. Im a gear head and I love talking about gear and learning about it.
The 404 is my main piece of gear for performing but it's also the center piece to this whole entire series. I thought yall might be interested. What's The 404 Ep. 1: The Evolution of The SP-404
Flipped some vintage vinyl with my SP-404 (84 BPM Underground Boom Bap). Let me know what you think of the grit BoomBap
Just dropped this new loop. Trying to blend raw vinyl textures with that classic boom bap bounce. The visual output is also a little piece/peace of my mind.
If you’re a rapper and want to write onto this, you can grab the free WAV with a follow on my BeatStars! Peace

Please help a beginner.
I haven't had the SP404Mk2 for very long, but I'm finding it difficult to set the sample chop or start/end and play the samples to the metronome... Do you happen to have any tips? Has anyone else experienced this at first? Will my skills improve if I keep playing? Please let me know.
Would the SP404 be a good kit for a DAW/computer replacement when I'm unable to use my computer?
I'm going to be taking a job that will take me away from the home for 2-3 weeks at a time. I'm unable to take my tower with me. I'm thinking about getting a SP-404 MKII and samples loaded up on SD cards. Is this a good solution for beat/song making while away from home?
Nope, wasn’t AI at all
Hi guys, posted a visually altered video yesterday, and some guy thought the performance was all AI, so allow me to post the og video to deny that. 😊
