So, I want to propose that Blood Chain form is actually a very similar phenomenon to Ichigo's horn of salvation form.

Ichigo entered this demi-hollowfication state by basking himself in Yhwach's reiatsu and what happened right before he pulled bankai?

He was blasted by Yhwach's attack with White Zangetsu at the forefront, so the sword directly came into contact with Yhwach's quincy reiatsu, the balance in Ichigo's soul was forcefully tipped further, leading to the unbalanced Blood Chain form.

I suspect that Tensa Zangetsu requires Ichigo's powers to have a certain level of balance with each other to unleash its full potential.

Previously, Ichigo said that he couldn't properly bring out his hollow, so the reverse should be true, he couldn't push him back fast enough and he had to go with Blood Chain form instead of his normal True Bankai.

Once Ichigo reverted back to the Horn of Salvation form, the balance was tipped back enough to the point that he can use normal Tensa Zangetsu instead of going into Blood Chain form.

Poor Subaru, well, people love to call him black haired Fourier anyway and the guy has an ability called “Lion’s Heart”, so, he’s also a lion king, lol.
