Dog walking in Herts

Dog walking in Herts

Hi All. I seem to have walked everywhere to little avail however I thought I’d ask on here just in case I’m missing anything.

Can anyone recommend any approx one hour fully shaded dog walks (that can be off lead) around North or East Herts that are relatively flat (max elevation gain 75ft ish) please? Because I’m really struggling at the moment. It also needs to have reasonable parking nearby for one car.

I’m not looking for secure fields.

Many thanks!

Because the UK government can’t arrest pets for holding up signs… YET.

Help / advice etc RE: heat

Guys I’m really desperate now. I write this sat on my driveway in my car at 3:30am because my tiny 42m^2 house is like a furnace.

My dogs are both critically unwell and “old” but not really old. Both have been clipped due to overheating but still they can’t cope in my house due to the heatwave we’re having.

I ordered an AC unit from a garden centre due to arrive on Wednesday which was then pushed until Monday and then on Thursday they cancelled the entire unit and refunded me because they couldn’t fulfil the order. Fine. I reordered one immediately from Amazon despite hating the platform and I signed up to prime which I would never usually want just to get it ASAP. At checkout they said Monday delivery - great. Took my money, still saying Monday delivery. Checked yesterday (Saturday) and it’s now saying delivery for 20th July 😱😱😭😭🤯🤯😳

I’ve been hosing my dogs down in the garden with cold water which stops the panting but within an hour of being in the house they’re both sprawled out on the floor panting again.

So far I’ve tried:

Blackout curtains
Cool coats (for them)
Cool mats
Making them lie on freezer boards with a towel over them
Damp towels
Frozen kongs/cucumber etc
Greyhound electrolytes
Ceiling fan, desk fans, fans you fill with water that let mist out
Taking them swimming at like 4/5am in natural water sources

Us 3 cannot go on like this. This may sound mad but is there any way i can make the air con go from my EV into the house until that AC arrives? Happy to leave the car turned on if this will enable the situation. AI (unethical i know, but this heat is also unethical) said that it’s impossible even if i buy that silver coloured ducting and run it from a car window sealed around the hose into the house. Especially because I have no way to get the hot air out of the house.

Please can anyone advise any possible solutions? Bearing in mind I can’t afford to just have professional air con installed or rent a pet friendly hotel room for 3 weeks… and I’ve just spent over £300 on an air con unit that I absolutely couldn’t afford.

I’ve lived in this house since 2010 and during that entire 16 years I’ve never been in this position ever… where I’ve been forced to sit in the car and the dogs have been panting day and night indoors. I realise this is man made climate change but regardless I need an immediate solution for the dogs in my care right now.

Thank you for reading and thank you for any suggestions.

Please don’t have a go at me because I’m already upset enough as it is.

Genetic testing results

Just wanted to share a quick update on my GSP, Helga. I recently had her extensive genetic health testing done through LABOKLIN (the full 13-page XXL bundle), and the results are back.

I’m incredibly pleased to say she is completely clear of every single breed-specific condition tested for German Shorthaired Pointers. Her genotype is N/N across the board for all the major breed risks, including Acral Mutilation Syndrome (AMS), Chondrodystrophy (IVDD risk), Cone Degeneration, and Von Willebrand disease (Types I and II).

She had two "noticeable results" in the breed non-specific section (a single copy carrier for crd3-PRA and a modifier for copper toxicosis), but as these variants have no scientific correlation or clinical relevance to GSPs, they have zero impact on her health.

Her coat genetics also perfectly match her classic look - confirming her solid liver/brown base (bs/bs), dominant black to prevent tan points (Kb/Kb), and two copies of the ticking/roan gene (TR/TR) for those classic markings, alongside a genetically guaranteed short coat.

It is such a relief to have the paperwork confirm that she has an exceptionally clean, robust genetic foundation. Highly recommend this depth of testing for anyone wanting full peace of mind about their dog's hereditary health!

NB. I’m not planning on breeding her, she was spayed many years ago. She has been unwell recently and extensive testing hasn’t uncovered anything ‘definitive’ so I wanted to see if this genetic testing may reveal any clues.
