Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Advice on areas to buy our first home please

Hi all,

My husband and I are looking at places to buy our first home max £700k for approx 3 bed.

We wanted to look at Hertfordshire but honestly I’m a little overwhelmed with areas and wanted to ask for help.

We want an area safe for children, good school, maybe village vibes but not compulsory and ability to get to central London in an hour max for work.

Any area recommendations would be so appreciated :)

What is Hertford like?

Hi, we (husband, I and baby) are considering moving to Hertford, near the centre from London. Would love to know honest thoughts on area/schools/things to do with babies/children and also if there are ways to meet people/mums with a toddler (groups etc) as would love to meet people. Thank you very much x

Slalom in Hemel Hempstead

Hey! Does anyone know of a quiet spot in or around Hemel Hempstead where I could practise slalom roller skating? 🛼

I’m looking for somewhere with a smooth surface and, ideally, not too many people around. I’d rather not spend ages travelling into central London just to skate…

Any recommendations would be much appreciated! 🙏😊

What is Knebworth’s vibe?

Going to view a house there soon as an out of towner. Seems like a nice enough village but keen to know:

- does it feel like an extension of Stevenage?
- is the commuter link as good as it seems?
- whats the vibe about the village expansion?
- does it have its own community feeling?

Thanks in advance!

Update from the first Space Jam night in Hitchin…

You might remember me posting here about Space Jam. A new night at Club 85 where musicians put their names into a hat, get randomly placed into bands and then have to make something happen together on stage in 10 minutes.

Well, our first one took place last Wednesday!
We’d only sold 12 tickets, so we thought it would be a nice, small introduction to the idea. Then people kept arriving. 54 musicians turned up, and we made 11 completely different groups performing throughout the night.

We had guitarists, bassists, drummers, singers, saxophonists, a trumpet player, keyboards, cajón and even a modular drum machine. Some people were experienced performers, others it was their first time on stage, and most had never met their bandmates before that evening.

The random combinations worked better than I could have dreamed of. People turned up without knowing exactly who they’d play with or what would happen, and completely threw themselves into it. The room was incredibly supportive, and it genuinely felt like the beginning of a little local music community, with everyone staying until the end to see the different creations being made on the spot.

Coming off the stage, we had people being approached to join their bands, high five’s, laughter and positivity, and a massive smile across everyone’s faces.

Thank you to everyone from here who encouraged the idea, shared the original post or came along.
We’re doing it again at Club 85 on Wednesday 16 September. If you’ve got an instrument gathering dust in the loft, this might be your reason to get it back out.

TLDR: Thank you!

Blocked off Welwyn Hatfield Times

Hiya, I was recently trying to look at the local news on Welwyn Hatfield Times, and found that any page I attempted to go on had blocked me.

I have done some research and this is most likely due to my IP address being flagged by hyper - sensitive security protocols. While looking at the news isn't terribly important, I would like to try and fix this.

Just wondering if anyone else in the area had a similar issue, and if so did it go away?

Thanks :)

Dog walking in Herts

Hi All. I seem to have walked everywhere to little avail however I thought I’d ask on here just in case I’m missing anything.

Can anyone recommend any approx one hour fully shaded dog walks (that can be off lead) around North or East Herts that are relatively flat (max elevation gain 75ft ish) please? Because I’m really struggling at the moment. It also needs to have reasonable parking nearby for one car.

I’m not looking for secure fields.

Many thanks!

UFO sighting in Hitchin

I’d left the pure gym in Hitchin at around 7.20pm this evening and was walking up Paynes Park and saw this object moving incredibly fast across the sky. I was on the phone with my girlfriend at the time so couldn’t get a video but managed to get this photo. Have no idea what it is, but I’ve never seen anything like it. Within seconds it had disappeared from sight. Absolutely bizarre.

Has anyone else noticed that some things at Simmons seem to have got a bit smaller lately?

I usually buy their small white baguettes and make toast sticks with them. I’ve been doing this pretty much every day for the past year, so I’ve got a fairly good idea of how many I normally get from one.

Since about last month, I’ve noticed I’m getting at least a few fewer toast sticks out of each baguette than I used to.

shrinkflation may have reached Simmons too. Anyone noticed anything else getting smaller lately, either there or elsewhere?

Fans

My dad lives in Hemel and is in need of a fan today. Preferably a tower or stand fan that he can grab or click and collect.

I don’t live in the area so can’t get to him (I live in the midlands). He’s older and struggling in the heat. I’ll arrange an uber to and from location (ideally in or around the centre). Any advice welcomed

I’ve looked on all the major shops and obviously everything is sold out for click and collect.

Ideally nothing that’s ££££. I know where I am there’s random electronic stores you can go in and try your luck, not sure what it’s like around Hemel
