Trouble with thumbnail covers on Kindle

I have books in epub format on my pc.

I'm using calibre to edit the cover image in the metadata options.
When sending epubs to kindle via calibre, it's forcing me to autoconvert to azw3. Another option is to convert to mobi before sending. It doesn't allow me to send them in epub format. I don't know if that has anything to do with my issue.

Regardess of format, the covers I added via calibre in the metadata options do not show up in the thumbnails in the library.

It's worth pointing out that the covers are showing just fine when my kindle in in sleep mode. So the covers are in the somewhere. They just don't show in the thumbnails. What can I do?

Question about loading ebook files from my computer to a Kindle

So, I've owned an e-reader (not a Kindle) for 13 years and it's finally dying on me. The battery is almost completely dead. I think it's time to let it rest.

I'm thinking about buying a Kindle but I have a few questions. I have a very big collection of books in my PC. They're mostly in epub format but I'm used to using Calibre and I know I can covert to mobi or whatever other format is more convenient.

My questions are: Does Kindle allow loading files directly from my PC? Will I need a USB cable to do it? Which file format is better? Will Kindle read these files well? Is there a specific Kindle model that's better for this? Is there a risk in using pirated book files in a Kindle?

Small differences between the novel and the audiobook

I recently had the idea of listening to an audiobook while reading the book at the same time. It was kind of weird and I don't really intend to do this again. But that's beside the point.

The book in question was The Truth and I noticed that several times throughout the book, there were differences between the book and the audiobook. Nothing that changed the story, just small things like different choice of words or how something was phrased.

This was a few months ago so I don't remember anything specific but I'll give a generic example: one version would say "he went up the stairs quickly" while the other would say "he climbed the steps very fast".

Why is that?
