Budget Dongle DAC showdown #budgetdonglemadness

Note:

  1. The goal of this comparison is to find a neutral sounding dac under 500rs since any dongle under 3k is neither reliable nor guaranteed to sound neutral, they just giveup out of nowhere and I am soo done of it. By this way, even if it dies, it wont hurt me and i will just get another one.
  2. I just want to settle with a neutral good sounding dac to use with my offline files and apple music (both 16bit FLACs). I wouldn't notice any difference above 16bit FLACs, if you think you can, then you can go for 24bit dongles and skip these.
  3. These might be suitable for you if you are an IEM user but not if you have power hungry IEMs/ Headphones. All these dongles had the same amount of driving power ~30mw@32ohms.
  4. It might look stupid as I included usb exclusive mode for 16bit dongles but atleast for extra power? Yes there is more power to it compared to w/o usb exclusive mode.
  5. I only tested each for a day, so I cannot comment on their durability.

What I used as a reference for this comparison:

  1. 7hz 71 (AKM 4377)
  2. Dell laptop (Cirrus Logic CS42L42)

Products:

1. Portronics ikonnect C pro

Price: Rs. 220

DAC: Unable to detect

USB Device Name: GHW-123P

Max Bit Depth and Sample Rate (Marketed vs Tested): Nothing is mentioned in the description, its actually 16bit/48khz.

Neutrality: Boosted subbass, unable to judge neutrality of mids and highs because of the same, Definitely not neutral.

USB Exclusive Mode: Works perfectly

2. Fedus Novus

Price: Rs. 350

DAC: AB229D

USB Device Name: USB Audio

Max Bit Depth and Sample Rate (Marketed vs Tested): Unlike Dr Vaku, here Fedus has mentioned 24bit/96khz in the corner of the description but after my complaint they changed their description. The product was definitely misleading but it is not anymore.

Neutrality: Most closest one to my reference dacs. Its neutral and clean.

USB Exclusive Mode: Tried multiple times but unable to get it into USB Exclusive mode, IDK why.

3. Dr Vaku Sonicpro - Absolute Scam

Price: Rs. 380

DAC: AB136X

USB Device Name: AB13X USB Audio

Max Bit Depth and Sample Rate (Marketed vs Tested): 24bit/96khz mentioned in the title but its actually 16bit/48khz.

Neutrality: Slightly boosted midbass and upper midrange. It's not neutral.

USB Exclusive Mode: Works perfectly

Remarks: This one was a shock, thought it could be the only 24bit dongle in this budget but turned out to be an absolute scam, how can they getaway by marketing a 16bit cheap ass dongle as 24bit/96khz in the title. Disappointing to see a company cheating innocent customers.

4. Oppo/Oneplus/Vivo/Realme TC01W Passive Dongle

Price: Rs.400

DAC: Nothing Phone 4a's DAC

USB Device Name: Nil

Max Bit Depth and Sample Rate: Depends on the device, typically 16bit/48khz

Neutrality: Neutral and clean but i feel the soundstage is slightly smaller compared to the other dongles in this comparison. Take this as a grain of salt since it's my mobile's inbuilt DAC, so your mileage may vary. Samsung, Google and Apple mobiles won't support passive dongle.

USB Exclusive Mode: Nil

Remarks: I really love the form factor, the weight is almost non existent. Trade durability for this form factor? Hell yeah!

Samsung is one retard for discountinuing their Type C DAC after their release of Type C earphones and Apple is another retard for limiting the power and compatibility of their Type C DAC with Android phones.

What should I do after I finish watching Jeremy's videos?

Should I either revise theory by practicing questions from exsim/other sources first and do the megalab before a week of taking up the exam?

or

Do the megalab now and then go for theory?

I am planning to take the exam by the end of next month, so which will be the optimal way, suggestions needed.

The OG waner SG was a great balanced iem with cons being the qdc connector otherwise it's my favourite iem. I have both the SG and SG2, i definitely like the SG's comfort more. The treble on the SG2 is good but i feel it's somewhat unnatural and fatiguing in certain situations. Though low volume listeners will enjoy SG2, it's definitely not perfect for medium-high volume listeners. All i want is, the OG SG with a 2 pin cable :)

I want to purchase Micca MB42X/RB42 with Fosi BT20A pro and reuse the sub from my old setup( Sony SA D100), the sub doesnt have any low pass filter and also it doesn't limit itself to 150hz, it mildly plays some sound till 600hz. Is it possible to limit the freq from the preout somehow?

There is some serious problem about moondrop chu 2 DSP, just after 8 months of purchasing, the mic button starts to trigger itself and after a few days the side which has the mic completely stops working. So i claimed warranty, and the replacement unit was working fine and now after warranty ended, again in a few months the same issue, first the mic button starts to trigger itself and mic side cable is dies.. It's really frustrating. I purchased this from HPZ
