What are some good DIY options for an AE86 coupe headliner?

Hey guys, I’ve got an AE86 coupe, but the headliner was missing when I bought it.

I’m in Sri Lanka, so finding an original replacement is pretty difficult, and importing one would probably cost me an arm and a leg.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and come up with a good DIY solution? I’d ideally like something that looks as close to OEM as possible rather than just a basic fabric-covered board.

I actually tried fabricating the backing board myself, but it didn’t work out. I’ve also asked a few fabrication shops around here, but unfortunately none of them seem to be able to make one.

Another option I was thinking about is going with a fabric-only headliner, similar to what you’d see in older Toyotas like the KE20. I’ve attached a picture of what I had in mind.

What do you guys think? Would this work well in an AE86, or is there another solution I should consider?

Would love to hear any ideas, materials, or examples of what you guys have done!

Thanks!

Thinking about converting my 2-door AE86 coupe to a liftback using Chinese reproduction panels - bad idea or doable?

Hey everyone,

I have a Toyota AE86 2-door coupe that I picked up a while back. At some point in its life, it was in a pretty major crash, and the right-side body panel still has some alignment issues. I’m pretty sure the shell isn’t perfectly straight because of the accident.

I live in an Asian country where AE86 parts are really hard to find, and unfortunately most local body shops don’t do great work, especially on older cars like this.

I’ve been wondering whether it would make sense to buy the AE86 body panels being sold out of China and convert the car from a 2-door coupe into a liftback. I already don’t have the rear glass, so I’d need to buy glass anyway. From what I can tell, the main extra things I’d need would be the liftback-specific panels, rear glass, and tail lights.

Has anyone here done something like this, or looked into it seriously?

How difficult would this conversion actually be? Is it a terrible idea, or could it be worth considering given the lack of parts where I live?

Also, am I missing anything major here, like structural differences, roof/rear quarter differences, hatch mounting points, inner panels, seals, wiring, or anything else that would make this way more complicated than it seems?

Any advice from AE86 owners, bodywork people, or anyone familiar with coupe vs liftback shells would be really appreciated.

Do you guys feel this disappointed living in Sri Lanka?

I'm a 30-year-old guy living in Sri Lanka, and I've just been feeling so disappointed with things lately. I earn a decent salary can't really complain about that but it never feels like enough.

I'm into cars, and I've been wanting to buy one. But just looking at the prices... I feel like I could never afford anything. Even an okay-ish sports car brand new costs an arm and a leg here. How do you guys keep up with this?

And the prices of everyday things a few weeks ago I bought a product for Rs. 350, and now the same thing is Rs. 500. The inflation is insane. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get the things I want. I work my ass off, literally working till midnight every day, and still when I go to buy something I want, everything feels way too expensive.

How do you guys even survive these days?

Also, walking around Colombo, I see people driving Ferraris and Bentleys. What do these people even do to become that rich?

Seriously though how hard should I even have to work just to afford the things I like?
