Is plug-in chip tuning actually worth it in 2026?

So I was riding with a coworker last week and his ""stock"" diesel wagon pulled way harder than mine, and he casually mentioned he's using some external tuning box instead of a normal remap. Now my brain's been stuck on this.

I daily a 2018 GTI, mostly city with some highway trips, and I’d love a bit more punch without nuking fuel economy or risking warranty drama. While googling around late last night I kept seeing these smartphone-controlled piggyback chips that claim like +30% power and better mpg, including one called GÄN Tuning and a couple similar brands.

I get that a proper dyno tune is always the gold standard, but maybe I’m overthinking this for a mild street setup. Are these plug-in boxes actually safe for long-term use, or are they just running everything lean and spicy until something pops?

Anyone here run one for more than a year? How’s reliability, fuel consumption, and did your dealer ever notice or care? If you’d do it again, which brands would you trust and which ones would you avoid?

Lizard button I installed

My sister and I have an inside joke that all bad drivers are lizards. I’m not sure if this is a modification but it’s in my car and I put it there. When you see a bad driver they are actually just a lizard who was turned into a person right that morning by an evil witch. She gave them cars and they’re very frightened.

It sounds like the lizard from that Hoppers beaver movie

Help me with creative ideas to build my dream car

So I have never super been into cars. I got my car at 16 and I have kept it since then (18 years ago, 2007 honda accord). I have done all the repairs myself and it runs fine still. When I was working in Haiti though I came across a middle eastern Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I know I cannot get this in the USA as a new car, but how can I get close? I have looked at the toyota grand highlander and the hyundai pallisade but they just don't excite me. I have the time to look and am okay with modifying a car if I am going to keep it for 20+ years

Sanity-check my idea for a custom exhaust

I have a 2017 hemi ram. Looking to do my first fab project. My idea is having a straight loud pipe to the rear tips, and a valve early on to have a quiet section that dumps under the truck. I have no experience welding, but I’ve ordered a flux core / mig welder that will be here soon. I plan to practice a ton before touching anything. My existing exhaust has a muffler and 2 resonators after it splits towards the rear. I plan to delete the muffler so it flows straight through to the resonators and exit when the valve is open. From the branched Y section, I’d like to have it quiet or mostly quiet for morning cold starts (I wake up at 4am and don’t want to be a bother). I understand I’ll have to freestyle the hanging / mounting but I’m not too concerned as I’ve seen some frame pieces that I can support the muffled section with. Is this possible for a first time welder?? I’m super optimistic I can do it without taking it to a shop. But I’m hoping to get some more experienced eyes on my idea. I think I’ve considered mostly everything, but someone tell me my concept isn’t impossible. Sorry the drawing isn’t to scale 😂 it’s a bit of a rough draft. Please and thanks for the help!!!

New car looking for mods

Just got a bmw 330i 2018 m sport as my first car at 20. Getting window tints tomorrow, but I don’t rlly want the car to look like everyday traffic or sound like it. If anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it, talked to a few people and some say air bags or coilovers first, others tell me a cold air intake, whatever you guys think let me know.

I also included some of the things that need touch up on the car, if you guys know any fixes or anything let me know too plssss. Thank youu.

Removing the infotainment

This is a general question regarding new cars.

Is there any resources online or does anyone have experience removing infotainment systems from new cars?
I would imaging this would entail doing a new ecu/tcu and hoping they fit with whatever car make and model you go with.

I am essentially curious if anyone is working on bringing buttons back and removing broken atm's from the dash board, while keeping performance and/or efficiency from newer engines and transmissions.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, I looked through Google for a few minutes and couldn't find anything. Also, I know this will void warranty lmfao

Just got my first car, a Volvo 460 from 1996.

I honestly think this car is slept on. The 940 and 850 get a lot of attention, but this car is just as awesome imo. Its feels like their little brother.

I see a lot of potential in it, but it’s definitely gonna need a lot of love. The paint looks like ass, and the windows are scratched up. So first i’m trying to bring it back to looking decent…

But when that’s done i was wondering if anyone has any cool ideas on what to do with it.

And yes, i’m putting some cool rims on it.

People pay money for this shit?

Im working on pimpinng my ride, no particular reason, and im currently working on a shifter modification, what you're seeing is me extending the linkage to reduce the amount of movement to shift gears, and ive done this so i can later raise the shifter knob near the steering wheel for more efficient shifting.

Mind the jank, this is only a draft and I will remodel the whole shifter assembly, I came up with this design on the spot and it works great for now, zipties and sheet metal do a good job, so why would you spend hundreds of dolars on a professional set? I never understood the pimping community going all out and spending a bunch for this stuff, ive been watching grind hard plumbing co alot and they inspired me to make my own banging subwoofer (panels are literally falling off the car), this is just a QOL for me, i have long weak arms.

James bond car

So I've been on the fence about getting my hands on a early 2000s beem preferably black and installing a oil slick is realy illegal even though it would be sick i want to rig up a smoke screen (to a switch) because it's less illegal but I have not found any resources on how to do so see my main uses for the smoke screen would simply be just fucking over tailgaters and messing with my freinds (before one of you say it no I will not buy a m57 and t and d her

My Maserati is out of commission for a while so I bought a Smart

As the title says, a thief stole the car and insurance isn’t helpful so I’ll be repairing it myself as it’s the last thing I have from my late father and it will take some time to repair. I bought a Smart Forfour as a small city car in the mean time but the vibes are off so I’m trying to mod it as well make a little Smartarati. So there’s the damage to the Maserati, gonna be around 20K in repairs, I’m managing it I’ve also made a little TikTok account to post about the repairs while it’s going on hahaha not self promoting hopefully as I am not sharing any links to the account, so there’s the smart car came with black seats I found some red leather seats and door cards and I’ve swapped them out to resemble the Maserati Also done a black Alcantara headliner to resemble the Maserati. Open to suggestions I’ll be doing the dashboard as well exterior mods to come as well

Need help finding my dream wheels for a Honda Accord

I've been having fun mocking up this Accord. I REALLY love the look of these Audi 19" 10 spokes. I dig the darker matte/non-chrome finish too. Any recommendations for something similar that would fit a Honda? Open to all suggestions!

Bolt: 5x114.3
Diameter: 19"- 20"
Width: 8.5" - 9"
Offset: ~ +50mm
Hub: 64.1 mm

Performance brakes for Nissan nv200 (small) delivery van?

My 2015 2.0L does urban delivery of light items (flowers, pharmaceuticals, food). The load is pretty lightweight.

It is stop-and-go constantly, and driving hard. (No highway driving at all).

I just found out that I need rear shoes and drums and my mechanic is also suggesting that he service the front calipers.

I’m wondering if instead I should do the brakes like as if I was a a fast and furious WRX and not a white cargo van. And get eg. big calipers instead of paying to service the ones I have.

Are performance shoes/ drums a thing/ worth it? My mechanic says no.

I don’t know much about cars or mods but I know it would be valuable to wait until the last moment before pressing on the brakes at a stop sign and stopping on a dime!

What are some quality of life or useful modifications for a big brick work truck?

So I got the f250 a while back for the beginning of a handyman/hauling side gig and have been working on updating worn parts and making soemthing unique. But before I start going crazy with cosmetic stuff I wanna poke around and see what are some things that'd be useful so I could incorporate them into it
