Air France bumped my parents out of our flight

Posting there to get advice!
A little desperate as we were supposed to travel all as a family (with plans together to and from airports), and somehow Air France bumped my parents off our flight, change it from a direct flight to a flight with a layover.
They had booked their tickets for months, we all paid to get assigned seats together a couple weeks ago, and out of nowhere the day prior, they were rebooked. We’re still in the flight and I can see the airplane is the same.
Moreover, they’re not even together on their new flight.
We called many times, got bumped from service to service. Nothing changed until we were able to get them on our flight again in Economy Premium. They received new tickets.
Somehow that didn’t go and they changed them back to the alternative flight, saying they didn’t pay for Premium so they couldn’t be on that flight…
We’re on our way to the airport and the call we just had still didn’t yield anything.
What does your experience tell you and do you have any advice?
At this point apart from another call, I have little hope for the check in counter but will still try.

EDIT: it looks like we had it resolved at the gate. Kudos to the gate agent. Hopefully it’ll stay that way! Thanks to everyone who replied.
