Modified hiking backpack with internal organization

This Colombia bag that I bought last week feels nice but I wanted some internal organization for my flashlights mainly if I’m being honest.

I was going to just do the main compartment but my big complaint was the lack of organization in the front pocket so I took the divider panel completely off and made 2 copies from 210D venom Gridstop and then used some xpac scraps for the pockets themselves.

Gridstop crossbody with HyperD interior and some extra hardware

This is my first time working with both of these fabrics. Somehow my gusset ended up like 2” too long so I sewed from the top center to the bottom corners in both directions and then folded and topstitched the bottom of the gusset to shorten it. That’s kind of how I do my duffle bags anyways but these thinner fabrics made it easier than usual.

I put an extra long key lanyard on the back that allows my keys to be accessible and usable but still attached to the bag.

The front pocket has little hidden divider that you can’t see when you initially open the pocket. This was actually a mistake but I channeled my inner Bob Ross and made it happy mistake.

Up late making bags that no one asked for

My usual 1000D cordura and Xpac combo.

7 pockets - 3 on the front, 3 on the back, 1 main middle compartment.

No pattern - I saw some guy on instagram do something similar, can’t remember his handle or id tag him.

All pockets are lined with 420D packcloth and the bag is pretty hefty overall with all the layers of the pockets. It barely fit through my synchronized binder and wow that thing is nice to have but I’m not sure if I’ll keep it set up.

Another xpac tot

The first xpac tote I made had handles that didn’t go all the way down to the seam and the handles would probably fail before the rest of the bag. This design fixes that and I made the handles angled in so they lay more naturally on the tote body.

1000D cordura and white xpac (vx42? 21?) from my RBTR grab bag last year.

The binding is a double fold 1000D cordura and it adds a lot to the bag.

Synchronized binder for Juki 1341

I’ve wanted one of these forever. It seems to work well. My LS-1341 had a thread cutter like a LS-1342-7 and I had to take off the whole threat cutter mechanism to clear the binder.

There were no instructions or really any pics online so here’s my setup. I’m excited to have binding be an easier and smoother process. I hate binding but this gives me hope.

The airport is the best place to bag watch.

Both bags designed and made by me.

This is the first trip I’ve taken where I used bags of my own creation and I love them. I also had a white xpac tote that I made.

It feels like that meme “no one in this airport knows I made all of my bags”

Where can I find old sails to repurpose into my sewing projects? (Portland, OR)

Sorry if this is an ignorant question but I don’t know anything about sailing.

I sew bags and accessories and sail cloth is a popular fabric to use for bag making. This got me thinking it would be cool to upcycle old sails and make things from them. I found a couple of other creators who do the same thing but I asked and they’re gatekeeping their used sail sources.

Do yall just throw away old sails? Or how does that work? Is there a used market for them? Should I post on a bulletin board at the marina?

Any help is appreciated.

Overbuilt grocery shopping tote

Composed entirely of 1000D DWR coated cordura and Xpac from my RBTR grab bag. (VX21 ?)

I took the mockup I made for my gf’s bag the other day to the store and couldn’t fit enough in it and wanted a fancy one for myself.

It’s got pockets on both sides. Then I made the pockets I wanted more of an ultralight bag so I didn’t line them and then I ended up lining the whole thing with 2 layers of 1000D cordura and used a double fold binding of 1000D cordura. I wish I lined the pockets.

The cordura binding added a lot of structure to the top of the bag and it will be really abrasion resistant. I didn’t do any binding on the inside because I only have this thin polyester binding and I didn’t want that to wear out before the cordura was broken in.

Leather tote/purse thing for the gf

Cowhide leather body and goatskin leather pockets. I copied a bag that she owns that she wanted smaller.

I made a cordura mockup first (last slide) I’ll probably lake a few more like this. Working on an xpac version now.

New machine to the studio: Reliable Barracuda walking foot zigzag

I needed a heavy duty zigzag machine for the patches and freehand embroidery that I do on my bags. It was this or a Bernina 950 that I found locally and I’m glad I went with the more portable option with the walking foot.

I’m not sure how old it is but these are basically a clone of a Sailrite zigzag machine. I know lot of parts are interchangeable and I want a monster wheel and maybe a new motor. Something is loud about this one.

It looks pretty dusty but barely used. The lady said her late husband bought it but never got into sewing with it. I felt really bad for her, her house was waaay out in the country and it didn’t seem like she had anyone else around. She posted it for $200 and I paid her that much but I felt weird and almost guilty only giving her 200 for this machine. Literally felt like I was stealing it when I was walking away and not in a good way. Oh well. I’ll get good use out it.

It sews just fine with the thinner thread that it came threaded with. Going to clean it up and thread it with some tex90 and see how she does.

Where to buy zippers and pulls for technical packs?

I usually buy from wawak but they don’t have any reverse bale pulls that I can find and their aquaguard selection kind of sucks, you can only get 1 type of pull with a small grab tab and can’t buy the zipper tape by the yard.

I want some of the reverse bale pulls for coil zippers and I want some different styles of aquaguard zipper pulls and aquaguard by the roll.

It looks like RSBTR has reverse bale pulls but no aquaguard. The zipper tape they sell looks nice but also pricey.

Pic for example of reverse bale pull.

Matching duffle and shoulder bag from thrifted Peruvian alpaca wool

I still need to make some handles for the duffle .

Duffle has pockets on the inside on every panel. 1000D Cordura for the interfacing, lining, inside, bottom, and cording.

I got the colorful fabric from a thrift store. Both patterns are my own.

Festival bag I made for a friend

My friend wanted a bag so I told her to pick some colors and let me cook. Zeds Dead is an EDM duo that were both big fans of.

Bag is vinyl coated canvas and the purple inside is a polyester that I bought off Amazon. Hardware from wawak.

Done on my Juki 9010, 1508, and 1342.

Redwood and Banana Slug themed shoulder bag

I got the patches from Redwoods NP visitor center.

Every panel has 2 layers of 1000D cordura sandwiched between the inner and outer layers so this bag is actually built like a tank and feels very luxe.

Brass hardware and zippers from wawak.

Green corduroy and orange suede both from the upholstery section at hobby lobby so they should be pretty durable.

The brown checkerboard is a vinyl coated canvas and I made a strap from it too.

The green tree fabric on the inside is a a quilting cotton. Not super durable but I liked the trees inside with the redwood theme.
