I figured I would share how my flare ups feel or what I assume are flare ups, in hopes of helping someone else and also see if anyone can relate to this.
TLDR: GI issues, fatigue, menstrual related, inflammation, looking for tips.
My most awful symptom is GI cramping and pain. I get super bloated and have really bad abdominal cramps that last from 4-8 hours and leave me on a bland diet for days. Sometimes it causes me to go to the bathroom as well. I’ve had my gallbladder looked at multiple times, and everything is always fine. But the pain tends to be in the upper/middle right most often. The bloating can last for about the same period of time and sometimes up to days.
On top of this is fatigue. I usually feel the need to nap either after work or in the afternoon. Sometimes I take a nap before bed later in the evening bc I’m so tired.
Weirdly, I find that I notice more overall inflammation. Usually, I end up getting tonsil stones during an active flare. I do have a good dental hygiene routine (brushing, flossing, and tongue scraping) but they show up during flares every now and again. My face tends to get a bit more swollen too and I feel more pain and tension in my joints and movements. I sometimes get pimples on my face and I NEVER get acne. Sometimes it even feels like the front of my throat or my thyroid is swollen and I feel weird swallowing.
The time I get flares can vary, but I usually notice them the week before my period most often. For a long time, I thought it was due to hormone issues before I got my hashimotos diagnosis. I had done some research about how the GI tract slows down during this time of the menstrual cycle and thought it might be related to that.
I can usually pinpoint what I think sent me into a flare or what combination of things might have. Gluten exposure, stress, fatty meals, dehydration, not enough sleep, etc. Sometimes it comes on quite sudden, other times i feel like I am on the verge of a flare up for days, just waiting for it to happen.
I’m interested to see how other people feel and if anyone has any tips for what has helped them.
